Touch Wood!

Well so far, dear readers, Eunice has been quite kind to us here in North Yorkshire.   She ravaged Cornwall, The Bristol Channel, the South of England and was reported to be creeping up the country.  Also she was dropping loads of snow on Scotland and all cross-country trains here were cancelled and also the A66 - the main cross-country road route.   Yes, we got up to a covering of snow but it is not cold so we get a black sky, a gale and a heavy fall of snow - then five minutes later Eunice is sending an apology in the form of bright sunshine and a drop in the wind - and lo and behold the snow has melted.  Black clouds just arriving, heralding the snow.

The gas man cometh at around nine o'clock.   A very pleasant young man he finally located some switch or other (it was in the airing cupboard behind a very neat pile of my carer's towels).  He diagnosed the problem quickly - when it was last serviced the gas man did not correlate the boiler and the temperature control and the consequence was that when the central heating is switched on the water has a tendency to boil!!   He made the boiler make the noise and yes - it was indeed that.   He fiddled about with some temperature control and hey presto - all done.   It does beg the question though how did the man who serviced it leave it like that?   And also of course - I have a contract with British Gas- costs me something like twenty pounds a month but they told me this was not covered.   So I suppose I shall have to start a long correspondence to argue about that.

But so far Storm Eunice seems to be being kind to us.   Long may it continue.   Such a pleasant young man, he started my day off well.

I'm glad that the storm has not lived up to the hype, at least for you.

It seems as if I'd want to take things up with the first repairman. That is plenty scary. I'm not sure how your systems are set up there, but water that hot could have exploded pipes and did some major damage to the house.

Here, my understanding of how this all works is that if the problem is with a piece of equipment that belongs to them, it is their responsibility. Furnaces and water heaters are bought by the owners of the house and problems with them are not covered. How does it work there? Do you own your boiler?

And I just thought...is this a boiler to heat the water that you bathe with? If so, that would have been a very major safety concern.

That is wonderful that your boiler problem was fixed so promptly. I love when a service man knows exactly what the problem is and fixes it with confidence. You should definitely not have to pay a bill for a problem caused by improper servicing in the past. I'm sure one quick phone call to British Gas, and the use of your "teacher voice", should do the trick.

So good to have the problem with your gas supply corrected, and that Eunice has left you all unscathed. We seem to have missed the worst of her wrath too, even though I can see the River Severn. Still very gusty but no more than usual. Hope it stays that way and condolences to all who have suffered loss of power, flooding, and any other damage.

My paper this last couple of weeks has been full of complaints about the British Gas service that you are paying for and not getting. It's very difficult for a start to get anybody to answer the phone, they rarely give you an almost immediate appointment, they send out independent contractors who are less than good, etc., etc. As a consequence I cancelled my contract with them last September and thousand have also.
The Storm here today has been both awful and scary and was getting close to the level of the 1987 "hurricane". I have new fence panels to replace and ridge tiles on my roof that have been whipped off, to get replaced.

I'm glad it was that simple, and not something that would require a replacement boiler, with all that involves - a long wait, lots of dust and unpleasantness, and maybe no hot water for a while. Indeed, that other service man did not do his job properly.
Good to know the storm has not caused much trouble in your area.
We're in for the next set after a stormy night and calm day, and all long-distance trains north of Frankfurt have been cancelled. So far, the ones here in the south are still running, but running late... then again, they usually don't need a storm to be late!

Your B Gas service contract sounds like a rip off to me and the reasoning of your gasman today saying what he did was not covered is difficult to fathom.

There's much to be said for #1 knowledgeable service people and #2 good starts to the day. You had both today. Good for you, my friend. May the trend continue throughout the afternoon & evening. ~Andrea xoxoxo

If the last service left your system in such a dangerous state how can it be your responsibility to have this error corrected, beggars belief. No doubt you will now have a battle getting the gas people to admit their error. Best of luck, keep on fighting, it’s exhausting I know but they seem to work on the principle you will give in before they do if they mess you about long enough.

It appears that you were thankfully left unscathed by Eunice. Doing the job right the first time is the ideal. Having to correct a previous error and then paying twice is maddening. I'd contest this exactly as you plan.

This reminds me of our new washing machine. It was making a bizarre noise, so we called in the man (it was still under guarantee). He poked about and found that the installers had left a large lump of polystyrene underneath. He removed it; no more noise!

Glad that you, like us have come through unscathed.
BG doesn't come out well on many counts. Even as an employer ( my daughter worked at the Cardiff call centre for a short while)

One thought has been squirreling away at me...why Wensleydale if the river is the Ure?!

Your contract with British Gas seems quite high for what they offer.
A local Corgi-registered gas fitter, recommended by a friend or neighbour, might work out cheaper for the odd occasions when you need a maintenance.

I like your idea of an apology from Eunice. Scalding water from ordinary hot taps is very dangerous. Good you good it sorted.

Thanks to you all and commiserations to anyone who has suffered any damage during the storm.

Thank god for that young man, an expert is worth his/her weight in gold. The snow came down in thick flurries yesterday it was beautiful but soon disappeared and only remains up on the moors.

I'm glad you weren't too badly affected by Eunice! Neither were we in fact, it was the higher parts of Scotland and the more northern parts that got all the snow. We got high winds and rain but nothing too extreme.
