I always polish the Welsh Dresser ii

I really was too tired to do a lot yesterday.   The walking round the Garden Cenre (which I loved) really took its toll on my old bones.   And to add to that - today I have had to do certain jobs because I have a new cleaner starting in the morning.    J, my Carer and I do the cleaning between us each week but then - once a month I like someone to go right through with the vaccuum and the polish - wipe all the door handles, wipe the skirting - that sort of thing.   I always polish the Welsh dreser in the Hall.    It has so many things on it - gifts from friends  and many things I have brought back from abroad - nothing valuable just mementos.   I have done this this morning.   Then I like to do the fire surround too as it has things which I would not like to get broken.   I shall do that in the morning before she comes.  I am not suggesting she is more likely to break them than I - but I would rather she didn't have to blame herself if for example my buddha met with an accident (I have had him for over seventy years and I know how much my son wants him!

What's the weather like with you today.   Here there is a glorious blue sky and a strong sun but there is far too strong a wind for Priscilla and I venture out.My dear friends P and D - along with a group of friends - are on the Norfolk Broads this week.   They sent me a photo yesterday of this very modern, streamlined boat.   Rachel tells me the weather is good in that part of the world - as does the weatherman so I expect they will all be enjoying themselves.

Well friends.   I shall pour myself a glass of apple juice and then go out and sit in the sheltered sun for half an hour.   Enjoy the rest of your day.   I really will see you tomorrow.

The weather up here has been glorious today, very warm indeed and sunny but a strong gusty wind. We have managed to achieve quite a few jobs out in the garden.

It is supposed to get very warm here and I am wearing shorts today! Quite a change as I had my winter coat, hat and mittens on just last week! I am going out for a walk now before it gets too hot for me.
Nice that you take care of your treasures. Mine are in a cabinet behind glass doors and I rarely dust them!

It's windy here but the sun is shining and a bit warmer than yesterday, probably in the 60's. Our weekend is predicted to be 80 degrees. It will feel like Summer. You are wise to care for the dresser and mantel holding delicate/precious items. My neighbor had a small urn from an archaeological dig and her housekeeper knocked it over, shattering it to bits. It was an accident but these things happen to the best of us.

Yes,today in Norfolk it has been warm, 19C. There is still a breeze which will be noticeable on the Broads but it is not such a cold breeze as it was.

Strong sun combined with a gusty SW wind today has meant that the last drop of moisture in the ground is being sucked dry, with similar weather for the next several days, gardening is not much fun at the moment.
I believe it's been said before, but it seems strange to do a lot of your cleaning the day before your cleaner comes.

Thank you for the reminder - it is time I got the polish out again. We have had quite good weather for a few days although the temperature goes up and down, which makes it difficult to know how many layers to wear each day. Everywhere is greening up beautifully and garden beds and borders show more colour each time I go out. Such a lovely time of year.

Derek - you are quite right but I have some precious things - not valuable is monetary terms but in sentimental terms from both my marriages - I have been all over the world and things I have brought back are precious to me although not worth much to anyone else - hence I would rather clean them myself

I shall sleep well tonight I think because as well as cleaning thedresser I HAVE ALSO HAD TO WATER MY PLANTS.

We have had beautiful weather too. Unfortunately, I spent most of it working inside.

It's good to hear you found a new cleaner. I hope you will be happy with her. Our weather has changed to summer overnight. All this week we are to be hot, above 90 F.

I remember a wonderful shop I used to frequent 20 years ago, full of Welsh dressers. There were also carved chairs, tapestries and fine antique wood furniture from England. It was a very calm shop. A restoration craftsman worked out the back.
The old shop had creaky floorboards, and was so atmospheric, dark, quiet and relaxing, while outside city traffic rushed by. I would have loved to work there as there was never a front of shop person, but it would have made me sleepy. I loved to see the history written in Indian ink on the price tags, which certainly reflected it. A shop much missed by me with its bell on the door and fascinating pieces and heavy wood polish smell. Enjoy your polishing and memories Pat!- Pam, Aust.

I worked outside today, only for an hour. I can scarcely stay awake tonight.

I had snow on the ground and a plus 1 C temperature. A thoroughly miserable day!

At about 5pm we sat outside in the sunshine, then at almost 6pm the sun went, and it became icy cold. I see it is 12C this morning, and will rise to 16C later. We may even see some 'light rain', although I doubt it.

We had 28°C yesterday, sun and blue sky, and it is predicted to stay like this all week. I think it became too warm too suddenly. What we would need is rain, and a lot of it.

My mother also had several small items which she enjoyed dusting and in some cases polishing. Most were worthless knick-knacks but just handling them always brought back happy memories for her. A day of rain is forecast for us today and for once many gardeners are hoping that the forecast is right.

The puddles over the road are being disturbed by light rain, so rain once more in this part of England. Good beeswax not that modern polish from an aerosol spray;) to make the house smell lovely.

The smell of furniture polish always brings back cozy memories of childhood for me.

It's thoughtful of you to think of your cleaner and make a plan for how to deal with special objects. Especially starting a new job with a new client, there are so many details to keep in mind, it's a relief not to have to worry about breaking things and just clean.

I don't dust and polish as much as I used to but when I do I love the smell of 'proper' polish and dusting all my favourite ornaments etc. brings back happy memories!

It's been raining and windy all day today Weave so your friends will no doubt have moored up at a nice Broadland public house.

Rachel - I believe they are intending to eat out every evening to avoid cooking.
Lynn Marie - I had a nice surprise when my cleaner ame because she turned out to be my gardener's sister!
The last oak furniture I bought I much prefer the smell of pure beeswax polishcame with a label telling me not to polish with spray polish.

The bungalow smells of polish and is lovely and clean everywhere.

Thanks for calling in everyone.

Sorry for the reply above - my hand obviously shook and part of a sentence hopped into the wrong place. Hope you can make sense of it.

Weaver, have you thought of giving the buddha to your son now? I thought of this because my husbands' mother was just here yesterday going through some boxes of "treasured things" we have been storing for her. She let us take what we wanted and the rest will be offered to other family members. Then, anything useful left will be donated to the Goodwill store (a charity store). Just a thought.
