Help please.

I need help please from all Mums, Grannies and Great Grannies out there.  My Grand daughter and her husband and their two children live in Scotland.   I have not seen any of them since the beginning of Covid although we have had phone/birthdays/Christmas contact.   The elder of my Great grandchildren is now five and a half, the younger six months old.   They are coming to see us in July  and of course I don't want the older litle girl to feel left out.   I have knitted the new baby a teddy (well I started it but my shakes made knitting the nose and sewing it all up impossible.   My friend S kindly took him home and brought him back all sewn up and looking very smart.   So that is his present.  I thought of an idea for my Great Grand daughter.   I thought I would buy perhaps four little presents and wrap them in pretty paper and hide them in the sitting room for her to find.   I thought a set of 'grown up' crayons and a sketch book (a 'proper' grown up one) for two - but I want a couple more.   Please has anyone any ideas?   It will have to be something I can buy on line as I hardly ever go near shops.   I asked my grand daughter to suggest something - but her list is really not specific enough.   I am not talking expensive stuff here.    The baby will get the teddy and some clothes as he is too young to appreciate things.   Here is the list my Grand daughter sent back:

She likes unicorns, princesses, animals, nature, magic, witches, wizards, teddies, soft toys, dressing up, ballerinas.

I have just thought.   Can you still buy those books full of a doll and then a lot of card clothes with  tabs so that you can cut them out and change the outfits the doll is wearing (all made of card).

Any ideas would be fully appreciated.   It is sad - I feel as though I hardly know her because it is so long since I have seen her.   Now and again I have sent some money for her to buy a book - I don't even know what she likes to read.   There must be so many families like this because of Covid and we can never reclaim it back.

Thank you in anticipation of a bit of help from some of you with the experience in that department.

Usborne do some lovely sticker books. I bought my 6 year old granddaughter several She also loves Lego, you could buy some small kits online, and someone gave her a unicorn sewing kit (I
think from The Range).

Pat, when I was about your great-granddaughter's age, my cousin sent me a pretty box a bit larger than the ream of colorful construction paper, scissors that were age appropriate for me, a new 64 count box of crayons, a little container of water colors, water color paper, tracing paper, and a coloring book. I was in creative heaven!

Then there are coloring books with unicorns and princesses along with new crayons, a simple nature book to read, dot-to-dot books, perhaps they still sell those cardboard designs with yarn to practice sewing. Those Washi tapes are pretty and colorful, too.

I look forward to reading what others suggest.

Hugs!

There are many small toy Disney Princesses available if she likes princesses. A small stuffed unicorn would be cute too. I love the suggestions from others of sticker books. Those are really popular at that age now. Maybe you could find a sticker book with princesses, castles, and such? You are brilliant to think of hiding four small presents around the room! It could be like a scavenger hunt for her!

I have to agree with the previous comments that the usbourne sticker books have always been a great success when I have given them as presents.they are available on amazon.i also like to look on etsy uk for little gifts like wooden jewellery or a handmade coin purse.have a lovely time with your family x

When I taught Kindergarten, I always found the dress-up centre to be the most popular area of the room. Little girls and boys love to try on clothing and accessories. You could put together a small box of some unwanted costume jewelry, a scarf, a slip and even a pair of heels. I actually still possess an old dress belonging to my long passed, (and greatly loved), grandmother. She let my sisters and me use it for dress-up many years ago. I think your granddaughter would love something that was once worn by you.

What a lovely idea. The National Trust offer a good range of books and toys suitable for young children. Xx

I also endorse sticker books, lots to choose from, Unicorns and mermaids are very popular at the moment. Osborne or The Works. Sarah Browne.

Unicorn sticker books, crayons and scratch art, my 6 years old granddaughter loves all of those. If you are happy to use Amazon, if you put unicorn scratch art in the search box it should come up.

Hiya, if you type unicorn into Amazon all the gifts for little girls will come up.

Our youngest Grand-daughter is also five and loves unicorns, rainbows and sparkly clothes. She also loves colouring and we have a blank drawing pad with felt tip pens here when she visits as well as other toys. Having started school she likes drawing shapes and colouring them in making sure she doesn't go over the line. What about children's dominoes or Old Maid and Pairs card games, a suitable jigsaw for her age or maybe the alphabet or number cards you can get for her to copy the letters and numbers? Just a few suggestions.

I bought my great niece a book of dress up dolls from Amazon. If you search 'Mother and daughter dress up dolls' there are two good ones, Costumes around the World and Fashion long ago.

How about some Happy Family cards, as long as Mum and Dad like playing games, good old favourite

You have lots of good suggestions here! How nice of you to plan some special treats for her. She will love searching for her gifts. Good idea, Pat!

A friend had these ideas and she has several granddaughters:
If the little girl enjoys art the sky is the limit as there are so many beautiful colouring books and pencils, paints and pens out there.
An active girl, how about a skipping rope or balance board or skittles for the garden?
Books are always well received if she is a happy reader?
I made up a sewing kit for Holly when she was five. I got a pretty cardboard suitcase and filled it with little balls of yarn and a French knitting dolly, buttons in a little jar, threads and plastic Needles and some squares of Aida stitching fabric.
I hope this helps.

More hugs!

I'd buy her a tutu skirt that she can pull on over her trousers or whatever and skip around your living room doing twirls and jumps.

Your previous commenters have made some lovely suggestions. I think you already have plenty to inspire you and would not have suggested anything different. I love your idea of wrapping little gifts in pretty paper and hiding them for her to find.

Lots of good suggestions here. I think the arts and crafts mix would work
Hobbycraft is a good site for them.

Maybe one of her 'finds' could be a miniature plant with a tiny fairy /toadstool ornament. Easy to purchase at a garden centre if someone can help with that.
As it is bulb time here, my little five year old visitor left with her emerging bulb and her artwork - admittedly the 'costless' childs paints and brushes I keep here, but perhaps for yours, crayons and compact watercolour discs - easy to transport, and great for a weak watercolour 'wash' over the crayon work which she will no doubt want to do depending on the length of the visit. Tutus and hair ornaments are always popular...also any card games that lend themselves to 'Snap'. - Pam

my great nieces are crazy for dress up clothes, Rachel is bang on with a net tutu. one of my nieces went wild for a felt crown with fabric jewels on. and the other loves the wand and a unicorn horn head band. these will all have come from Amazon as there are sadly no toy shops left in my home town and they will not have cost much as it is all dress up clothes.

I second the tutu! My little grand daughter is wild about sparkly stickers.

Fairy wings and a tutu!!! And your idea of the book with the dress up stuff sounds great! I think they are very much into make believe at that age.. My Granddaughter is 4.... She like cars and dogs so you never know.....

A princess crown and velvet cape might be fun for a little girl that likes to dress up. I also like the tutu idea that Rachel suggested. My neighbor's children love sticker books, especially the books that feature animals.

I think books full of pictures is also a delight. Beautifully illustrated fairy stories. As a miniaturist at one stage of my life, small dolls and furniture can be introduced as well.

I have often used a website called " wicked uncle" for presents for my grands. You can go to different sections......ie, " girls age 5" . Lots of lovely and unusual ideas and various prices too.

You know, the comment about the fairy things reminded me: Last summer, I went to see my grand daughter and one of the things from the 'pineapple bag' was a little fairy house with a figurine and a little house and a garden bench. We took that down to the dirt outside her mother's garden and how we played with that! We set the house up, and shaded it with twiggy small branches, made a little pond from a jar lid, 'planted' wild flowers picked from the field, made little stone walkways and fences. We had such fun. Every morning, she'd skip along ahead of us to the garden calling "Little faaaaaaaaairy girl!!!!!!!" Total expense? $5 from a dollar store.

I was going to suggest this very thing. A sparkly tutu and maybe a ballerina coloring book?
