A very short chat today

Only a very short chat today.   I watched Trooping the Colour this morning, as I always do every year.  What a wonderful spectacle it was, as usual.   I love those massed bands, I love the timing and the precision - literally to the minute throughout- I love the horses.   They are such beautiful specimens, so well cared for and so well trained - as were the riders for hardly a foot wrong from those wonderful beasts.  I smiled when the King's Horse shook its head and looked as though it might 'play up'.  The King, who had one hand on the reins and one (his right - ready for saluting) by his side.  He raised his other hand to the reins, checked the horse as he rode and when it obeyed he leaned forward and patted it on the neck.   The sign of a well-practised rider. Interesting when Huw Edwards commented that the late Queen stopped  riding at the Ceremony when she was 60 and the King took to the saddle in his 75th year - and took to it with aplomb!

Oh and weren't those big drum horses magnificent?

Somehow, I always thought Trooping was to mark Queen Elizabeth's "official" birthday since her real birthday in the spring was deemed to unsafe, weather-wise, for such an event. To read on your blog that it is going on for King Charles came as a surprise.

I always watch Trooping the Colour and remember my father telling me he'd had a sneak peek at one of rehearsals one year, until a policeman asked him politely to move on. My son took part in it one year (he was a Grenadier Guardsman) and was able to get my husband and I tickets for the dress rehearsal. That was really thrilling. As you say the horses are magnificent and the entire spectacle is amazing.

I so agree about the precision and pomp! It's amazing to watch.

Hugs!

I don't know why you describe this as a "short chat", it appears well on a par with other chats to me. Perhaps you are covering yourself for a busy night in front of the tv. I am glad to hear Charles got on the horse, I forgot all about Trooping of the Colour. I guess people like me who don't follow the media have to expect to miss things from time to time. I did note on selected headlines on my phone during the week that Megs and Harry weren't invited and then it went from my mind.

I don't seem to hear as much about Trooping the Colour as I used to. In fact I'd forgotten all about it till you reminded me. I really should take more interest as I'm told that I was born while the ceremony was taking place.

We travelled to London several times to see the trooping of the colour live when the children were young. It was wonderful with such an atmosphere.

Eachel - I just love the organisation that is so meticulous and always seems to work like clockwork.
Librarian - I always thought it originated in the days when armed forces fighting for the king needed to see the flag to make sure they fought on the right side. I might be wrong - must read up about it.

I saw part of it for the first time in many years - actually I was checking to see the news, but yes it certainly is impressive.

I suppose if you (one) used to play polo, trooping the colour must be a doddle.

You are correct, Weaver. It was a magnificent display!

And the commentator reminded us that the drums were 'solid silver'. A wonderful ceremony.

I too thought it was wonderful, and King Charles and Princess Anne looked so good on the horses. I do love the pomp and ceremony and wished I could have been there.

I had to watch after your comment about the King calmly discouraging his horse from misbehaving. I’d never have noticed this. I did notice that one if the drum horses had its head down much farther than the other drum horse. Was it because of the noise? Maybe he was just upset that he had to be on parade instead of at the stables.
