Yet another book

.My gardener is here starting to get things going on the patio again.   It is beginning to take shape.   This morning he is putting a wooden enclosure around each bush - an enclosure which will project above the pebbles.   I hadn't envisaged it like this but he has persuaded me that it will stop the soil and the pebbles mixing around the base of the bushes and will make for a neater finish.   I am not persuaded fully but he is a good gardener and does know what he is doing so I shall go along with his idea.   I am relieved he has come because the shrubs were ready for a good watering and I can't climb the steps up on to the patio.

It is cloudy and cool and very Autumnal here this morning but the weather forecast is that next week we shall be in for a week of hot weather so maybe we are going to get an Indian Summer.

It was our Book Group on Monday and the book for this month (which Amazon delivered yesterday) is 'Dress your Family in Corduroy and Denim' by David Sedaris.   It is a series of seriously hilarious essays - some only a couple of pages long - about family life.   I have so far read the first three and have decided it is definitely not the book to read on public transport unless you are not embarrassed by making a noise.   It is impossible not to laugh out loud at his turn of phrase and at the pictures he paints.   His every synonym and every metaphor are just so right and just so funny.   Do try to get hold of a copy it is a brilliant choice for Book Group and will be a hard act to follow.

I have nothing planned for today, The Times still hasn't come (it is 10am) so - if it ever arrives - I still have all the Mind Games to do.  I have rung the Newsagent and it just has not come yet.

Have a good day.

The wooden enclosure idea seems a bit odd time will tell if you find it acceptable.
After a week in lush green surroundings with everything growing profusely, I'm not looking forward to drought stricken, bone dry and yellow Sheppey tomorrow. Especially with a hot and sunny week forecast.

I love David Sedaris when he reads his own stories. As you say, it is impossible not to laugh out loud.

Yes, you have many David Sedaris fans amongst your readers Weave.

I hope your paper soon arrives; I rarely read one these days but I remember how lost my father used to be when there were no papers. There aren't really enough humorous books in the world, are there?

I am another of the David Sedaris fans. I remember when he read his first work Santa Land Diaries on public radio. I would stop everything and just listen, sometimes making me late to work. I once heard him read at a local theater and the whole building rocked with laughter. Enjoy!

I don't think I have ever come across this author, but the book sounds great - I love it when a book makes me chuckle, or even laugh out loud.
Same here about the weather, it will be summery warm (even hot) again over the next few days. Ties in nicely with the start of my two weeks off work!

I must try and get hold of this book. I've just given up on one that was just too sad and depressing for me, even though it had good reviews.

Splendid David Sedaris!!! Just the appropriate author to lift the spirits and lighten the mood at this time. Enjoy Pat. Bet you read more when you’ve finished this one xx

Whenever I need a few chuckles, I turn to David Sedaris. I think I have now read all of his wonderful books. Occasionally, he writes a column for The New Yorker magazine. Last March he wrote one entitled, "My Failed Attempts to Hoard Anything At All". I printed a copy to mail snail-mail to a friend who could use a lift. In addition, to being a wonderful writer, he seems to be a kind and gentle soul.

Have you listened to “Meet David Sedaris” on the radio? His shows are on the BBC radio app and well worth a listen.

There’s anotherUS columnist called Dave Barry who is equally funny in my opinion, his pieces are so funny it’s quite often impossible to read them without weeping with laughter.

Hae a lovely weekend.

Your Book group choice sounds very amusing. I shall look out for a copy. I can understand your feeling piqued at not having your newspaper delivered on time. I feel very put out if I can't settle down to my word puzzles on a regular basis. However, better late than never, I suppose.

Derek now that the wooden enclosures are up I can see the point of them = they hold the soil in well and give each plant a good 'helping' of good quality soil and stop the soil spreading over the surrounding pebbles. They actually look quite nice.

That book sounds good - I need something to make me LOL right now!

Every year at Christmas the National Public Radio station we listen to plays David Sedaris' Santaland Diaries. Just hilarious. I will look for the book. It sounds like good fun.

SO glad you're reading David Sedaris. He is the only author that has caused me to belly laugh out loud while reading! I've been to a few of his live readings, and just adore him! His "Me Talk Pretty One Day" is absolutely the funniest! I am a firm library user and rarely buy books. I buy HIS though! Enjoy! :)

It must be difficult not being in total control of your garden. I hope the wooden surrounds idea works out. Glad you have found a good book to laugh over. I don't laugh enough.

Well have not bought David Sedaris, but ordered a couple of books yesterday, 'The Salt Path', because there were loads of people booked for it at the library, and a book I mentioned on my blog yesterday. I suspect the wooden enclosures round your firs will also keep off the birds as well raking through for worms.

Good point Thelma about the enclosures. Re The Salt Path - I found it a very inspirational book - we read it for Book Group when it first came out.
