Living Alone again.

One thing I have noticed about being on my own again (apart from still missing the farmer every single day) is how the jobs can pile up and there seems no need to do them.   When there were two of us then things like food shopping, washing and ironing (yes, I do still iron) - the mundane jobs, had to be done regularly.   Now that I am alone it is not the case.

Washing tends to be done - as one friend who also lives alone said - when one almost runs out of clean knickers (!!)  - and shopping never seems to need to be done apart from fruit and vegetables and topping up the dog and cat food.

But today the jobs had piled up - and there were also some appointments, so it has been a very busy day. It has also been a lovely, sunny, late Summer day so a joy to be out and about.

Hair at 9.30, letters to post,  a visit to the Physio, a topping up with petrol, a visit to a car wash - I must say it is lovely to drive away with the car gleaming - and a nice walk with the dog off the leash. Washing flapping on the line - I shall collect it shortly and iron it and put it up on the airer.  The airer over the Aga is one thing I shall miss when I move.

Unfortunately a visit to the Physio always makes me very tired for the rest of the day so that jobs after that were a bit of an effort.

Meanwhile, as I am doing all these jobs, the fields around me are being cut - hopefully for hay if the weather holds - for silage it it breaks.  The cut grass smells delightful.

Sounds like a productive day. It's a nice feeling to get things done - clears the mind a bit.

I miss the airer over the Rayburn but don't miss all the dust from burning wood and coal!

A lovely post on everyday life filled with poetic quality.

You've had a very busy day. I wish we could walk Rick off his leash.

I did laundry today, too, and it all dried so quickly in the breezy sunshine. Your day sounds pleasantly productive and satisfying.

I know what you mean about after physio. I have pulmonary physio exercises to do every other day. On the day I do them I am exhausted even if I do nothing else! I thought the exercises were to make us fitter ? I have recently bought some clothes which will need ironing....Seriously considering the charity bag, but they werent cheap and I would still have to iron before putting into the bag. Bum.

I love the smell of fresh cut grass, Weave. I suppose who wouldn't? It certainly beats anyone's clean knickers!

I hope that the Physio apt helped, even if you had to rest up afterwards. I trust tomorrow isn't quite as busy though I think the sun may have moved on his way a bit.

I've never lived on my own for long, and rarely get a day on my own here. On a recent occasion when I did, it was quite liberating!

If on my own, I would still iron and do the housework (probably more often as it would just be me tracking dirt about!) but I would read and sew more and watch JUST what I wanted on tv!!

It's interesting how different ones of us behave differently when alone or in company. I have not been bereaved as you have - and that probably makes all the difference - but in the times of my life when I'e lived alone, I've always been more efficient than when living with other people.
I don't iron now - but that's to do with time. I find ironing very satisfying. It's a bit like hoovering or mowing a lawn. One can see where one's been.

You get a lot done, I tend to be very lackadaisical, doing laundry when I have to and shopping as necessary, no fixed day for anything.

I know so well how you feel about those jobs. To my shame, now that the house is sold, I seem to have lost interest in it and the garden. However, I will find enough discipline to leave it all in good order. Having packed so many of my possessions I am resorting to jigsaw puzzles and knitting to keep myself entertained, having had to buy the puzzles and knitting needles because mine are already packed!
We have had a lovely day here today and I'm so pleased it was the same for you and Tess.

Good thing the cleaner still comes Weave!

Last month my husband was away for 15 days. I did what I wanted and nothing else. Lots of chores didn't get done and I didn't care.

So happy you had a good day, it really does help when the weather is accommodating.

From what you tell us on your blog, you are always busy and getting things done, sometimes I wonder how you fit it all into one day!
After Steve died, I did not find it hard to get used to doing all the cleaning and washing again (he did most of the household work since he was home a lot more than I was). But I really had to learn to do my own food shopping again. I had to keep reminding myself that if I was not buying any bread, there would simply not be any bread there. Over the years, I have become better at this.

It was a beautiful day yesterday, and you got a lot done. Think the trouble with one person, or even two, is that we don't get through much food. Of course most of us don't dine out on a regular basis ;)

Typical British weather - dark and gloomy today. Thanks everyone - you all seem to be on my wavelength!

I only do laundry when it is nice enough to give it a good blow on the washing line. Did you ever find out what the beep in the car was ?

I know what you mean about laundry!
I just popped over from Coffe On the Porch.
I'm so sorry for your loss.
Well done with the kittens. Kids can be so helpful...

The great joy of living on your own is having the jobs pile up and no one nagging you to do them, they just sit there until you feel like doing them! As for ironing, very much resigned to the "no thanks" bin in my house.

Sounds like a perfect day. Busy, but perfect. You will be able to rest up tomorrow, all of your chores will be done.

With our very rainy summer, I have barely used the clothesline to dry clothes. I do have two wooden racks that I use indoors. I must admit I barely ever iron anymore. We just don't wear much totally cotton clothing that requires it. I hope your physio session was successful. -Jenn

Ditto, except I have no dog to walk and no airer for the laundry. Would you write a lovely post some day and explain that. I visualize a cupboard with racks, or some such affair. It's all a beautiful mystery about English affairs.

Rachel Phillips said...

Above the Aga or Rayburn stove, but part of it, is a rack upon which you can put clothes to air or plates to warm or anything you want to benefit from the rising heat of the stove.

I love the smell of wash hanging on a line. Only thing better is a new puppy's breath or a horse and saddle. Okay, and a spray of Viktor and Rolf's Flowerbomb.

The Weaver of Grass said...

Eleanor - the beep in my car was because my dog was sitting up in the passenger seat without a seat belt on!!!
Rachel - I do know the sort of rack you mean and they are very useful. Mine is not like that and I am sure it has another name. I shall put something about it in my next post.
Thanks everyone for the comments.

It sounds like you had a wonderful day all in all. I'm sorry you're missing your farmer.. It's an ache that never seems to go away.
