One of the drawbacks of living up in The Pennines - or any other hilly district for that matter - is that it is almost always windy. One part of my garden is seriously infested (there is no other word for it) with Marestail weed. I spent a fortune on a specialist weed-killer which my gardener put on for me last year - twice. It made not the slightest difference. He has enough to spray it again this year but since it was twenty centimetres high (the recommended height for spraying) there has not been a single windless day. Today promised to be such a day and I contemplated ringing him - but it was not to be. By ten o'clock the sky had clouded over and the wind had got up. It is still dry but quite a chilly day with a stiff breeze. Certainly not what I could call a 'still Autumn Day'. I wonder whether we will indeed get any of those this year.
The highlight of the day today for Tess and I has been our trip to The Tip. Today we had our kitchen T V which had finally given up the ghost; my old frying-pan which no longer had a reliable non stick coating and two or three large cardboard boxes. Taking such trips to the tip (rather a nice journey in itself) I find very therapeutic - on a par with filling my Green Bin with garden rubbish, which I did yesterday afternoon. A sort of 'cleansing'. Until tomorrow.

We, too, live in a very windy location, even without the frequent gales sweeping in from the Atlantic.
This week I sorted out the drawer where I keep my scarves and gloves. It gave me quite a feeling of satisfaction for such a trivial chore. I think I may need them soon.
Spreading compost or peat on top of the soil will help bring the mares tail roots nearer to the surface. I have used it on people's gardens to control sheep sorrel. Thus making it easy to hand weed and no need for manmade chemicals.
I hope you have no intention of replacing the kitchen tv set. Nobody should watch television in the kitchen.
It's quite windy here in West Wales, too. We're only about 6 miles from the sea as the crow flies. For some reason, though, the wind often dies down around 6pm, so that's the time we usually weed-spray our ridiculous crazy paving - a badly-laid hangover from many owners ago!
Mare's Tail is horrible stuff to try to get rid of. My mother's garden had ground elder, courtesy of her neighbour who allowed his garden to revert to some sort of jungle.
Living in a flat there is not much need for me to take things to the tip, but I feel as you do when I load up my shopping trolley with items for the charity shop. You are right - it is a kind of cleansing.
Hope you get your still day soon, so that the mare's tail can have another dose of weedkiller.
I am sure Tess love the trip as much as you but for different reasons !

To hell with pesticides in my view Weave. An expensive waste of time - also in my view of course.
I take the "back road" as often as possible. The view is superior, generally.
Sounds to me like a good excuse to use Roundup (if it's still legal in the UK).
When you first mentioned the problem of Mares Tail I knew you was going to be disappointed because for the last seven years I've been battling it in my partner's garden. Tried the same expensive weedkillers as you, with little effect and the only way that I've controlled it but not eradicated it, is to continually how it down, which weakens it. Sheppey is normally a windy place but this last couple of days we have had unbroken blue skies, very warm sunshine and just a breeze - it has been perfect.
Still very much summer here in the Cotswolds. I would learn to live with the Mares Tail if I were you and would certainly not go anywhere near Roundup!
Two words to the hacker - if only!
I was thinking about your Mare's Tails recently when I listened to somebody discussing Horse's Tail and it being one of the earliest forms of plant life dating back billions of years. I don't know if they are related, if there is a connection then I'm not surprised it is difficult to eradicate.
When you have exhausted all other avenues and the supply of the very expensive weedkiller then you might consider Penhill's suggestion and come to terms with it living in your garden.
I'm also thinking a more appropriate common name might be Nightmare's Tails...
