Birthday meal.

It is my son's birthday tomorrow and I suggested earlier in the week that I take them out either for Sunday lunch tomorrow or for a meal tonight.   They thought about it long and hard and came up with the fact that they would rather have a pizza here tonight than go out.   So the table is set for their arrival and a Yorkshire curd tart sits in the fridge for 'afters.'

For anyone that doesn't know what a curd tart is it is a pastry case filled with sweetened curds and sultanas added.   It is utterly delicious.   I used to make it regularly but this one is bought from the branch of Thomas the Bakers - a local Yorkshire baker - and their sandwiches and cakes and bread are as good as home made.  On the whole I think my baking days are more or less over.   I love making inventive salads and things like that - and even casseroles - but anything which can go wrong I  leave to the professionals.

Here today it is a very cold and very windy day.   There has been intermittent sunshine but it is not a day for going far.   Tess and I have had two walks round the estate and I went into town for the curd tart - other than that I have stayed indoors and read the paper.   Now I await my visitors, complete with pizzas.

  2. As a Yorkshire Lass - curd tart is part of my DNA. I do like to make it myself but often have difficulty getting the curd cheese. Thomas the Bakers are excellent - we are addicted to their vanilla slices and their sausage rolls are far better than those from Greggs! Debbie

  4. Curd tart sounds delicious. I don't bake anymore either, well, once in a blue moon. I don't want all that tempting baked good sitting around, so buying a dessert to share is what I do too. Happy birthday to your son.

  6. Enjoy your pizzas first and if you have room for curd tart but if not you can always eat it for breakfast and they can take some home.

  9. I've never had curd tart, but would be more than happy to try it if the opportunity ever presents itself! I have a terrible sweet tooth, so like Terra above I try not to bake too often so I don't have a lot of temptation sitting around. Enjoy your birthday meal with your son and daughter-in-law!

  13. Hi Pat - Yes I am in Yorkshire - on the coast in Hornsea - although I'm originally West Yorkshire Born and Bred. We returned here (the siren call) after living in various other places (down South! Shudder!) for work. I don't have a blog myself but am an avid reader of others; I can say that yours is a favourite and has been no small influence on deciding to take more holidays in God's Own County and enjoy the natural benefits of the Dales and North Yorkshire. So be warned - if a scatty 50- something woman launches herself at you in Tennants or the Leyburn Co-op - it will be me saying hello!

  15. I hope your son enjoyed his birthday meal. I don't know if it is possible to get a genuine one down here but we had a holiday in Yorkshire many years ago and the 'real McCoy' is delicious.
    I am the same with cooking these days and tend to make casseroles, soup and strange stir-fries for myself. Years ago I would have a go at most things. I have a drawer full of baking trays, cake tins, etc., but might as well get rid of them. I love home made cake but it is too dangerous to have one in the house!

  19. Thank you Rachel - the evening went well. Good food all round and Schloer to drink (or Elderflower, or non-alcoholic Beer) The sort of evening he chose so that is the main thing. I am more of a posh restaurant person for that sort of occasion - but each to his own.
