'Christmas comes but once a year,
and when it comes it brings good cheer.'
Can't help feeling that once a year is enough, don't know about you. Our little market town is usually quiet on a Sunday, especially in Winter. But when I drove through today to get petrol the town was heaving = there was an extra market - Christmas trees and holly wreaths, fish, fruit and vegetables, all manner of possible presents.
All the cafes were open and appeared to be doing a good trade and there was even the stall selling hot beef rolls (and there was a good smell .)
Tomorrow there will be frenzy of folk collecting their poultry which they ordered weeks ago - I shall try to go in as early as possible. Then the rest of the day will be free to spend doing this and that and Tess will get several pleasant walks as the sun is forecast to shine.
Christmas Day I am spending with three friends and Boxing Day with family. For the first time for many, many years I am not doing the catering.
I think my family think I am past it now - and they are most likely right. I am rather looking forward to January 2nd. Don't know about you.
I hope that you have a wonderful Christmas Day with your three friends. Then your family Christmas - I imagine you will be glad not to have to cook for everyone. I have my 3 offspring here so will let them do their specialities (Danny's Yorkshire Puds are Mile High ones!!)

I think I am almost past it myself, ha ha, the cooking part. The village market scene sounds fun. I am cooking the ham which is easy, and my older son will prepare some food. I make wild rice the day before. Merry Christmas dear Weaver.

ReplyDeleteCan't wait until my kids take over the Christmas feast. This year I am cooking a leg of lamb for a change - hope everyone likes it. We are just 6 this year so it should be fairly stress-free.

ReplyDeleteI don`t blog much any more but I still love to call in and read your news. I can imagine your lovely town, amid the Yorkshire countryside, looking friendly and festive this week. Our small New Forest towns are similarly colourful and it is good to see many of the independent shops still surviving.

I usually look forward to January 2nd. My husband never really enjoyed Christmas and last year I was invited out by family for both days - this year will be the same, and I am feeling almost guilty (but not complaining) about this new regime of being fetched and brought home again after being cooked for, waited on and thoroughly spoilt.

While I do love Christmas I find myself getting worn out each year with all the preparations. I am baking today and tomorrow and we will have six here Christmas and just three the day after. I will welcome January to take a break and rest!

The pre-Christmas shopping bit is to be expected, what gets to me is just two days after Christmas Day where you see the same people out again buying yet more huge trolley loads of food and drink, where does it all go to?

ReplyDeleteI don't believe your family thinks you're "past it" when it comes to catering. It is probably more about letting you lean back and enjoy things for once, instead of the other way round.
By the way, the salad you mentioned the other day (green leaves, feta, dates and pecan nuts) is going to be my contribution to New Year's Eve at my parents.

Christmas, like everything else these days, seems to be speeded up to
such an extent that no one has time to pause and reflect before hurtling
into the next activity.
I'm trying to return to a slower pace with intervals when I can reflect the blessings of
having family and friends around and appreciating each one of them.
