Healthy???

On Wednesday afternoons I go to an exercise class for the over sixties.   It really does me such a lot of good.   The sitting down half I find relaxing as we go through one set of muscles after another, stretching and moving them to music and I feel much better having done this with the help of a professional who knows what she is doing.

The standing part is not so easy for me as my balance is not very good, but I do what I can and always use a chair for balance.

Today we had a shortened class and then all made our way the five hundred yards or so into the centre of the town to The Post Horn, where we had reserved a table for afternoon tea.   I should add that we wore some kind of Christmas decoration - hat, ear rings, flashing reindeer horns, head bands.   You name it - whatever we wore we certainly looked a festive lot.

We had scones with jam and cream, toasted tea cakes, tea, coffee, orange juice, chocolate cake and an hour's fun.   Luckily there was hardly anyone about and the cafe was almost empty apart from us so we weren't making much of a disturbance.

But hardly a healthy end to a session designed to keep us all in shape was it?

  1. A little bit of what you fancy does you good Pat! I am sure the exercise beforehand used up a few extra calories to leave room for a bit of a feast.

  3. I was just about to type the exact words that Bovey Belle typed. It all sounds like a lot of fun to please all the senses, and this time of year is not the time to think of waistlines. We need to store fat to keep us warm throughout the winter months!

  14. The season of winter is made for all of us to fatten up for the long hard days of January and February ahead. Enjoy and forget guilt.

  15. Sounds great to me. A laugh and some good company with food thrown in ( if you'll pardon the image that conjures up) is good for us all
    Thank you for your blog. Your countryside observations remind me of my rural childhood. We love your part of the country and often camp at the Threshfield campsite near Grassington which I suspect is not far from you. Sue

  18. No it wasn't a healthy end. Instead you should have been consuming celery sticks and slices of cucumber, washed down with tap water.

  19. Sounds like such a fun time; I'm sure the happiness of companionship outweighed any little negative set back a nice tea would have on the body. By the way, what an adorable little great grand daughter you have there. And I love her knitted blankie.

  20. Penny is right, it is not as if you do this every time you meet for exercise class, is it!
    Derek does have a point, of course. But what difference would it have made to the poor people of Aleppo (and elsewhere in the world) if you had NOT gone to the café?

  22. Being able to gather together with your friends for exercise of your bodies, and then to treat yourselves to exercise your conversational skills with the help of some treats seems like a great balance to me, Pat. Did anyone at your cafe gathering take a photo of your festive accessories?

  24. I agree with what the Librarian said about my comment, if you can't alter things with just thought, why mention it. It seems as though it's just a simple "ease my conscience" exercise and then, right, let's get out and eat, drink and be merry and worry about the poor children another day.

  27. Interesting to read how you all feel about this. As a group of almost twenty over sixties (and many in their eighties) all trying to keep fit (and keep their balance) I know it does us good to let our hair down now and again. I suppose if we spent our lives worrying about conditions for so many of our fellow men then life could easily become unbearable for us all.
