Wet,wet,wet

F

Like somebody(I think it was Derek) said the pavements have been wet for weeks.  Everywhere is sopping and has not been dry for what seems like weeks.  I  had thought just the same when I had looked out earlier from my computer room window.  Everywhere and everything is sopping , the sky is grey and today - as the morning has worn on - the fog has got thicker.   Alright the weather girl tells us it will get warmer as the week wears on.   Warmer it might get but it is dismal, unpleasant weather.  And if I am honest I don't like four Bank Holidays in a row.   4 days when everybody seems to have gone to earth.   No cars on the road, short dog walks because the weather is so horrible, nobody about at all.   Thankfully my carer came for an hour and later inthe morning my son rang for a chat so it is not all doom and gloom.

And with all the channels towatch there seems little I want to watch.  Of course we are all different - I don't watch any of the soaps and I rarely find a serial I enjoy (80 days is pleasing so far) and I have caught up this morning on A Very British Scandal because I remember it happening very clearly and scandal with a capital S it was indeed.   The second episode is tonight.

One nice thing - friends S and T bought me three hyacinths in a lovely pot like the bottom of a tree trunk with a door in it and a little holly wreath on the door.   We decided that the Hobbit lived in the tree trunk.   This morning, dead on cue, all three hyacinths (dark pink ones) are out and smell lovely.  Another pot  this time with blue ones in sits next and they are just showing their colour.   My poinsettia is doing well, I have tete a tete daffodils coming on well on the kitchen sill and iris bulbs now in the cupboard in the garage in the dark - so that is colour for months to come hopefully.

I can't see any of my garden bulbs up but the trouble is that because there are steps I can't get up there so have wait and see what has survived.  Another case of 'If Winter comes can Spring be far behind?'

Winter refuses to come to Texas this year.... Although with the awful freeze last year one hesitates to say anything.. I wasn't living here then so maybe thats why i'm brave enough to mention it.. We need rain so badly ... so i would take your sopping wet for 6 weeks.. i can hardly imagine it.. The ground is so dry its like powder and a warm south wind blows almost constantly... Your flowers sound lovely Pat.. Time to start putting the Christmas decorations away... and get ready for a New Year! A better year hopefully for all of us.. Hugs! debs

Perhaps we had different expectations when young, but I was talking to my husband today about the lack of interesting NEW programming on the terrestrial channels this year. Unless you're very interested in farming, vets or walking (and I know you are) there was very little new programming, and most of it of this easy reality variety. We seemed to have the opportunity to watch hoary movies and Christmas episodes of old comedies wall to wall some days, repeated the next day and the next, and few interesting dramas.

I remember seizing the Radio and TV Times when the Christmas editions came in and circling all the films being debuted, especially foreign and art movies which BBC2 used to show very late at night, and the special programmes, and even arranging when we ate Christmas dinner to avoid clashing with favourite shows. This was before the advent of video, of course, and the existence of a trillion cable channels. Most of them don't bother with Christmas programming, and thank goodness because it means there are still a handful of shows I enjoy to watch during Christmas week whereas not only is there nothing new and special on regular TV, they've also stopped most of the things I follow ready for the special offerings. Roll on Only Connect, the only star in the TV firmament as far as I can see!

I know what you mean about there being so little to watch on the box, Weave. If you want heart warming laughs (don't we all?) then I can thoroughly recommend the latest Shawn the Sheep animation from Aardman animations and the first Paddington film which are both on iPlayer now and both are wonderful.

Tom I might just try that = thank you.

I think we have been lucky weatherwise in Norfolk because I have seen quite a bit of the sun in the weeks leading up to Christmas. It is damp and drizzly today but quite mild. As for tv, I am glad of the technology we have today that enables us to record and store and watch things again, which is what I have been doing - re-watching things I have recorded in the past and like to see again.

It's been grey here for weeks, rain of varying heaviness off and on most days, but we got out in the lighter variety earlier on for a park walk and then I took myself off for a more energetic walk along the bottom lane. Just to the barn and back but getting back to walking fitness again - my hips ache if I sit too long.

Occasionally the sun will come through and light up a hillside - plenty of those to see from here - and that is cheering. Looking for the first Celandine now. I'm sure your bulbs will come through on cue. I've still got some to plant!!

I can identify with much of this post Pat. The continual wet, murky conditions and too many Bank Holidays when all life seems to have gone into hibernation.

You may like to see the Quentin Blake programme that was on BBC2 when you were watching Strictly the other day. The Drawing of My Life, it is called. I am sure you would like it. I guess it is on Catch up or Iplayer or somewhere.

I know how you feel today. I was feeling bla and bored as well earlier. For whatever reason, I seemed to have snapped out of it now. I'm about to start googling recipes for using up leftover turkey. That should keep me busy. We're having a nice little dropping of snow today. It looks very pretty, I must say.

Oh how I love the smell of hyacinths!! Yes, it is very gloomy & rainy here in northern-most Indiana too... but I'm grateful for that "wet" in the form of rain... instead of snow!! Oh my word, it rained SO HARD & LONG from dusk last evening until dawn this morning that if that would have been snow, we'd be buried alive right now. The wind was so bad my windows rattled so it would have been an epic snow storm, to say the least. But all I see today out there is wet green grass and a scattering of autumn leaves, with no white stuff in sight. Yahoo! There's always a silver lining, I suppose. Hang in there, Weaver!! I will if you will! ~Andrea xoxoxo

We enjoyed 80 days too Weave. Also the Scandal which we shall continue tonight.
It certainly is very wet and was like this last year too. In our park, the lake has almost overflowed and the wall nearly gave way.
Spring isnt far away, my snowdrops are peeking through. Bev

Our weather has been milder than normal, altho, that is supposed to change for tomorrow and we might get a bit of snow or freezing rain. That will keep me inside for sure! If one of your visitors has a moment, they could take photos of your garden beds for you to enlarge and check for progress! That way you can see it without climbing the steps.
Stay warm and cozy!

The garden is looking in a sorry state just now. I'm looking forward to the bulbs making an appearance. X

It has been a wet and gloomy day here too. I am usually happy to take down the Christmas decorations in January but if the weather stays like this we'll all need them to give a bit of cheer.
I have a hyacinth bulb growing in a specially shaped glass containing just water. I hope it's perfume is not too strong as I find it overwhelming indoors.
Bulbs are popping up here. Your garden will look so lovely when yours are in flower.

Our weather is supposed to be up to Autumn temperatures by the day after tomorrow.

Thanks Rachel for the recommendation - shall look for it in the morning.

Thanks everyone. See you tomorrow.

Having lovely pots of flowers blooming during the winter months is always cheerful and just what is needed to help us get through the cold/damp winter months.

We've had a lot of rain recently in California. It's wonderful because we've had a drought for the last few years. I didn't know iris grew indoors.

It's mostly been wet and grey here in Germany, too, but we did manage a walk without needing brollies on Boxing Day before the rain came back in the afternoon. This week, 14C is forecast for Wednesday and Thursday - much more like spring than mid-winter.
I spoke to a friend in Yorkshire yesterday, and he said they had 14C forecast for this week, too, and he laughed and said this is what passes as summer here sometimes.
Not much on the telly that I am interested in at the moment, but I have great books on my pile of Christmas presents and am looking forward to starting them as soon as I finish my current read.

Thank you everyone for your varied and interesting replies - good of you to take the time to keep in touch over Christmas. Back to 'normal' after the weekend!

The weekend is a while. It is only Tuesday so far. I was hoping for some normality tomorrow!

You are right, it is so damp, miserably so. We are not having the ice and snow of previous years. You feel justified in hibernating!!

I removed this comment from further up and edited out the very unfortunate spelling mistake ... oops!! ;-)

You've just reminded me that I meant to get myself a bowl of Hyacinths ... but I totally forgot. I bet yours smell gorgeous on their first day of being open.

The television has been a bit hit and miss over the holiday period hasn't it, so I made sure to record lots of my favourite things to act as back-up. We are going to sit and watch Death in Paradise this afternoon, oh to see a bit of sunshine instead of all this damp, dreary weather.
