Derek says he finds himself longing for Spring - I am with you there all the way Derek. After such a glorious Summer and a reasonable beginning to Autumn we have been suddenly plunged into this spell of drenching rain, strong, gale-force winds and damp, drear chill.
But we do have to remind ourselves that we haven't reached the first day of Winter yet so there is a long way to go. I am sure that if we could just get a day or two of sunshine we would all perk up a bit. My bungalow faces due South and when the sun shines it heats the whole place. But the windows into the sitting room and kitchen are big and when the sky is black and no sun appears it makes an enormous difference. Truth be known I am missing the farm's wood burner.
I shall go in a moment to watch the last of three programmes 'Inside the foreign office' - I am not sure how much of what they say is convincing but it does give one an insight into just how these so-called 'important figures' dash from A to B. They fly from one side of the world to the other at the drop of a hat. I couldn't keep it up for a week and it is nothing to do with my age (86) I couldn't have done it at 26. The moral here I suppose is that a high salary and being important is no substitute at all from relaxing, having evenings and week ends off and enjoying life. Or do they live in a different world from me - metaphorically of course.
It has helped being in the sun for three weeks. But the drought we had in London left me quite keen for a bit of rain. Trouble is the weather doesn't necessarily do things in moderation, even in temperate old Britain.

ReplyDeleteWe are in a very mild weather pattern here int he Pacific Northwest of the US. The east is getting all of the cold weather, the coldest on record they are saying. I'll take a few cloudy days instead of their cold - but I sure would like to see the sun now and then too
ReplyDeleteSunshine promised tomorrow, tho still a bit windy. I think it was 2010 it snowed and never stopped from November, like now, and went on and on.
ReplyDeleteMild day here with sunshine. I have towels on the line drying outside in the wind now, 9pm. Very enjoyable weather.
ReplyDeleteIt is quieter here now, but this morning was dire. Very strong gusts and torrential rain. I did manage to get my shopping done without being blown away or drowned and after lunch the sun came out just to taunt me.
ReplyDeleteI don't envy those high fliers in the Foreign Office at all. I like a simple life and a bit of peace and quiet.
'The Thick of it' was a good series I think. Did you see any of them Weave?
ReplyDeleteI feel certain you have draperies to cover those windows to keep out the cold and dark. Is an Aga a wood burner? I love to read books set in England and all the homes seem to have Agas that are just so much more than a cooker. I priced them one time and oh my!!
ReplyDeleteMy late father in law was a senior diplomat. They don't receive huge salaries, which is why they all receive nice gongs on retirement. It's supposed to be a higher recompense. It isn't!

ReplyDeleteI have longed for Spring as far back as I can remember, I've always been a warm weather person, who is easily affected by the cold and lack of sunlight. It's always amazing when we look back to how much "dashing about" that we actually did do when we were younger. I shudder now when I think of how much I used to pack into each day and week, both physically and mentally. Today promises to be sunny!
ReplyDeleteAlthough I am a warm weather person like Derek, I also love Christmas and the weeks surrounding it, and so I am right now more looking forward to that than longing for spring. Hearing the odd (confused?) blackbird sing early in the morning and at sunset, though, reminds me of spring and how wonderful a season that is.
ReplyDeleteRain is forecast here for Sunday, and I won't begrudge it in spite of the day out with friends we have planned - we really do need it!
You'd have thought that such globe-hopping would no longer be necessary with modern communications - maybe they just like to escape the winter weather.
ReplyDeleteThe weather here in Yorkshire is pretty drear, garden furniture and the odd pot float around in the strong winds. But there is colour and light approaching that dreaded day of Xmas, perhaps we should rejoice in candles and tatty decorations. ;)
ReplyDeleteWouldn't it be possible to have a woodburner in your bungalow? To cheer you up I read somewhere that it starts to get lighter in the evenings after the tenth of December.

ReplyDeleteCro, Times have changed at least in the EU. There are said to be 10,000 'working' for the EU who 'earn' more than the British PM. The EU tax band is something like 8% up to 27% (max). Throw in free education, health care etc.. and you can see they're on a good screw. More than 700 committees work in secret. Only a dozen or so are open to scrutiny.
ReplyDeleteSnowy and gray here in the Appalachian mountains this past week, but no cold wind like you describe. It's rather nice to gather up, gather in. I am enjoying the fireplace and the coziness of home. The gas heat is a nice plus, I have to admit. We heated with wood for years, not we can just enjoy a wood fire for its beauty.
