It has been a lovely week end here - both weather wise and visitor wise. Lunch with lovely company at friend W's on Saturday, yesterday lunch out with son and daughter in law. Today catching up with washing, ironing and the like ready for the week end when friends are coming to stay.
I am not as fast (in the nicest possible way) as I used to be and I have to make lists before I begin , so I sat down this morning, wrote out what I was going to feed them on and made lists for shopping.
That done I now have all week to think about it and decide whether or not I have forgotten anything.
How easy it is to have people to stay these days and how lucky we are to have such a huge supply of goods to choose from. Here in our little town we have a really good deli, the best Co-op I have ever been in, a super Friday market for fish and fruit and vegetables and several really good bread and cake shops where the goods are baked on the premises so that tempting smells waft down the street.
When I was a child we did have people to stay sometimes - aunts and uncles or honorary aunts and uncles- but the whole thing was a major operation. No cars involved as far as my family were concerned; no such luxury. It was train (steam and stopping at every station) and the bus.
Food for their stay was carefully planned but as my mother baked her own bread and currant bread (plum bread as it was called in Lincolnshire) and my father grew all our salads and vegetables there was nothing fancy - just good, plain food.
My last job for the day has been to wash both dog beds. I always fear that the bungalow smells of dog - I think one can get used to such a smell, although speaking to my neighbour earlier when she saw the beds on the line, she assured me she had never smelt dog round here - slightly reassuring.
The last day of perfect weather I believe. Already there is a much stronger breeze than there has been and the weather is set to go downhill from here onwards. New plants in my new border will be delighted.

Good food and friends. What more could you wish for? Have a lovely time.
This sun is making us all feel better. Lovely weekend for you. Sure the next one will be too.
Unfortunately, if your next weekend's weather is the same as forecast here, it's not going to be very pleasant. You are so opposite me in respect of guests, I never invite people and don't like them turning up unexpectedly but good luck to you, I imagine I'm very much in the minority.
The weekend weather has been all we hoped for and much enjoyed. I am sure your visitors will enjoy your hospitality next week and maybe we will have some more good weather by then. However, I bet the farmers and gardeners are all looking forward to some much needed rain.
Sounds like you had a lovely weekend.
cheers, parsnip
You always seem busier than me. I don't entertain, nor make lists, nor know what I am doing until I actually do it mostly.
I enjoy planning for guests, mainly because it is a reason to take our cuisine up a notch!
I agree about the animal smell, and the dog’s bed is the prime suspect. I also have a cover for the only seat the dog is allowed on, and I notice how whiffy it can get. Regular washing and airing does the trick.... and a fresh bag in the vacuum cleaner!
Yes,I've had a lovely weekend away, bad weather upcoming!
I hope all that weather clears off for your company next weekend.
Enjoy your shopping and guests when they arrive. Really looking forward to some rain my beans need planting....
From what I know about you from your blog, you are a great host, doing everything to make your guests feel welcome and at home in your home!
I, too, love having guests, although sometimes planning things around a full working week and most weekends either away or with O.K. staying, can be a bit more challenging and so I don't do it as often as I'd like to.
I make lists for all sorts of things - though ironing is not on any of them! I don't ever remember having guests stay when I was younger; the house just wasn't big enough. Heating back on again by the end of the week from what I hear.
The farmers will appreciate today's drop of rain. As for us we've had to turn the heating back up. It's forecast to brighten up again soon.
The regular guest I remember from childhood was my Uncle Elwyn. He'd always arrive with a box or two of liquorice allsorts. People never stayed for meals, only for cups of tea and biscuits.
Looks like you've some spam.
I love it when you enjoy a bit of nostalgia as you did here reminiscing about your childhood, guests who visited, modes of transportation then, the food your parents prepared. You're such a good writer, Weave, you need to do more of this!
