I live on the top road on my estate and our bungalows are on a bit of a rise, consequently our windows look out over the whole estate, This is particularly true of mine as I have waste ground opposite. One by one the windows I look out on are becoming full of twinkling, flashing Christmas lights. Of course they are not in any way synchronised and looking at them for any length of time is very tiring, so I tend to draw the curtains
and shut them out.
The other thing about them which I don't find pleasing is that the majority of them are electric blue. Since when was this colour seen as 'Christmassy'? I really have no desire, should I decide to stay up on Christmas Eve, to see Santa's sleigh go past festooned in blue. So, if you or one of your elves is reading this then please can we stick to the traditional red, green and gold? If ever someone breeds a holly with blue berries then I will take it on board.

ReplyDeleteI have some electric blue lights this year. Purely for the reason they were half price last January in Wilko. I do agree they are not Christmassy or warm and friendly. OH has them up for this year but I might try and sell them on. I never have lights flashing or twinkling. It would give me a headache. I’m quite partial to multicoloured. No white lights on my tree this time. The grandchildren love them.
ReplyDeleteI once asked a sales assistant why the Christmas display in a major department store in Sydney was done in silver and blue. She said that those colours are the traditional colours of Hanukkah and they wanted Jewish customers to feel included , since this celebration occurs close to Christmas.

In the Southern Hemisphere, cool is good at this time of year ... it’s currently hot and humid and stormy.😁
LOL, a friend and I were just having this discussion; we don't like the lights in the cool spectrum, either! For me, fresh greenery with red bows and warm white lights are the ideal...
ReplyDeleteI hate those flashing lights - no wonder more and more people are suffering from stress. LED bulbs cast a very clear light which is good if you need to work in artificial light, but it is very cold and for Christmas lights I prefer warm white ones which keep still!
ReplyDeleteI am a traditionalist and like green, red and gold in my Christmas decorations and wonder if the blues, purples and other colours might have been adopted from smart and trendy shop window displays.
The few lights up around us are blue as well, although I hadn't really registered this until reading this post. I suppose the manufacturers have to change themes from time to time, but lights don't usually last that long, so next year's might be better!

ReplyDeleteOne Alpine tree decorated with warm white lights, and one smaller tabletop tree with multi-colored lights, mostly for the children.
Before we know it, they'll be NO traditions left.

ReplyDeleteDon't understand why people have to have such huge displays of lights on their houses in the first place. I look across to the rear of a house which is festooned with those blue lights, which flash non-stop until at least 11 pm. Must be a nightmare for their neighbours if they choose to go to bed early with the bedroom flashing blue all the time.

ReplyDeleteIf it is any comfort, Weave, Father Christmas's robes were always blue, but then Coca Cola changed the to red for marketing reasons.
ReplyDeleteI'm not keen on flashing lights, it really is stressful to look at them. There is nothing in or on my windows to signal Christmas this year; the few decorations I have put up are the ones you have already seen on my blog, all indoors.

Hubby and i had a laugh over your post this morning Pat... You don't like blue... i don't like PINK... since when is pink a 'Christmassy' color? And its almost impossible to find a string of lights without pink in it. I'm with you... green , gold, red... now blue i don't mind. I think it reminds me of 'cold'.. i see 'blues' in winter.. ReplyDeleteThe blue ones are probably those newer LED lights. I hate them. I don't mind blue mixed in a little on strands, but whole strands of blue? Please, no. I am a red, green and gold person, and prefer white lights. My husband likes the colored ones so we compromise--he can out them up in a few places outside.
ReplyDeleteThey decorated our village with strands of blue and white - they just look like something from our local football ground as they are the town colours! Last year some of the blue and white ones had obviously stopped working and had been replaced with a few gold. This year they have added in silver - the whole village now looks a bit of a mess.
