Trying again

I am trying again but now am having trouble keeping a post on line - and I have forgotten how to retrieve.   But here goes - I'll try again.  Almost a century - heaven forbid that I should live another ten years that make that true.   But if I look back to my school years everything has changed.   Friend M called yesterday - she had been helping at her church sale at the weekend.  Jumble  sale? No way - don't have those any more.

I suppose in a way Charity Shops have replaced them.   I have been reading Barbara Pym - read her many years ago and all I can cope with at the moment.  The way Lady M sent her last years 'cast offs' and the way the church 'elite' looked through them to see which they could buy and adapt for next year.   None of that any more - seems this years sale had hand-knitted Christmas tree ornaments which sold like hot cakes.

As we agreed clothes aren't made to last any more;girls watch television, read the fashion pages and buy the up to date  stuff and wear it to death.

I look in my wardrobe and see a coat I have had at least fifteen years (and still wear).

When I look around my home I see many items from the hospital thrift shop mixed in with my parent's items. So many of such beauty and with a mysterious history.

Many of my clothes are 20+ yrs old - if I can still fit into them, I keep them!

Same here about keeping on wearing clothes, wherever I might have obtained them. I wonder if at a certain age we stop paying much attention to fashions. So glad you got this blog posted ok.

Your post certainly rings true for me. I am constantly amazed at the sheer volume of clothing for sale, both new and used. I have quite a few old things that surprise me when I think of how long I have had them. One shirt I have owned since 1995, and a coat since 1997. I probably have other things that are older. I have one small closet and 3 dresser drawers to hold my clothing, and a small chest for lingerie. When I see walk-in closets filled with clothing, I am just stunned. Most of my clothing comes from thrifts, can't see any need to add more to the world's overload.

I still wear a few items I've had for 30+ years and they're still in good condition.
It's getting cold here and it's lovely to be in cozy clothes once again.

Hugs!

I am always so glad to find a post on here, Pat. It means you are up and about and moving forward. I'm with all the rest of you in regards to clothes. I have many old things that are 15-20 years old and I like to shop at the thrift store. Nance, Iowa USA

Since I started volunteering at a local charity shop I have been shocked at the huge volume of clothing that comes in every week. Sackfuls of unwanted clothes. A lot is sold of course but sadly much of it is too worn or dirty for the shop and is bagged up to be sold for rags.

I love good clothes that last. I also keep them forever.

I do miss the nearby church’s “garage sale”. It was in the school lunchroom. Last one was about 15 years ago. I never bought clothes there but do still have a lovely small framed mirror purchased from there.
Thrift shops seem to have been overrun with clothes and James Patterson paperbacks.

So glad you're feeling better. I love Barbara Pym- I've read all her books at least 4 times. She's just brilliant.

I haven't read any Barbara Pym - I must find one and see what I make of it.
I like clothes that last. They become favourites and I never want them to wear out. The only ones I get rid of are those that were a mistake in the first place, or no longer fit.
So glad you were able to get your post on today. It is infuriating when things go wrong.

I have some pretty old stuff in my closet, too. Hey, it's it's not worn out, wear it out.

I admire your perseverance with technology Pat.
I used to have a blog, with lots of photos, but needed by husband's help a lot of the time, and he tired of the effort. They say 'happy wife, happy life', but I think 'impatient spouse, rattled house'...so off to the charity shops for me. I've had some fabulous finds over the years.
Also, being an artist, I miss garage sales where such interesting things are found for inspiration, including rusty pieces for tying into fabric for a eucalyptus and natural plant dye process that takes days and sometimes months of 'curing'.
Keep getting better , and thank you for continuing efforts in spite of annoying challenges. - Pam, Aust.

We have lots of resale shops around here and I can find nice things for cheap - sometimes with the original tags still on them. Young and old are shopping for bargains.

I like quality classic pieces of clothing. Well made classic style clothing never goes out of style. Some of my clothes are 25-30 years old and I have no intention of discarding them. It is always good to see you here.

I have few clothes and wear them until they are completely worn out. Then I again buy quality and so the cycle continues. My younger sister, on the other hand, likes to have every seasons trend and ends up spending way more than I on her clothing :)

I still have clothes from many years ago..and if they are serviceable, why not?!
Well done on persevering.
We love your company xx

I still have and wear a coat, or should I call it a cape, made of loden which I bought when I was 15. I turned 70 this year. And I still have the fur coat of my mother, but I don´t wear it, so I don´t know if it counts. It is very heavy and very warm, so maybe I will wear it in the house when we have no gas?

I wear my clothes and shoes until they fall to bits. My wife despairs.

A few firm favourite items may stay with me for decades, while others don't last very long; I admit to not always buying the best quality but sometimes a "fun" find simply because I like it. Still, I do wear most of my things until they become too shabby to be seen in public (work or elsewhere), no matter whether they are still "trendy" or not.

Here in Germany, we have not quite as many charity shops as in the UK, but jumble sales are still VERY popular.

I am aware from your blog that you like new clothing also. I hope you are in good spirits today and the fun will be in the form of living.

Thanks everyone for your additions to the debate - just what I like to hear - makes me think - as you know - of us all sitting with a drink(stronger than tea/coffee) in my sitting room.

I miss jumble sales but I don't miss being elbowed in the ribs by elderly women. What they call 'vintage' now seems like yesterday's wardrobe.
