Ominous

We are desperate for rain here.   But for a good rain - even a downpour.   But nothing torrential so we are keeping our fingers crossed.  We have two rivers - the Swale running through Swaledale and the Ure running through Wensleydale.  Both can rise twenty feet in an hour if the water runs off the fells as it does if the ground is very dry so there is always a period after  a long dry spell when everyone is a bit apprehensive.   There have been a couple of catastrophic floods in the time that I have lived here.

I have  probably got a new addition to the family - still  taking my time thinking about it but am almost sure the answer is "yes please."   A neighbour and a friend of T and S, my friends, has offered to lend me (and if I like it sell me ) her mother's Shoprider invalid carriage.   Yesterday T brought it up and put it on charge.   After a coffee I got in it and I loved it.   I expected to be scared but not a bit of it.  S walked with me to the end of the road and back and we left it on charge.  Now they have promised to walk with me into town and back.   At present it is just a matter of which button is for which operation,

So here is a job for you.   Priscilla will have a gentleman-friend.   What shall I call him?   Any ideas?

I am waiting with baited breath for the arrival of Roger to live at John's with Dorothy, Mary and Albert.  She should have arrived by now.   I hope the gang have taken her under their collective wing and she is feeling at home don't you?

Keeping with the P's suggest Percy !

I like Gill's suggestion - Percy and Priscilla sounds good. My first impulse was "Tony" but I really have no idea where that comes from. You could be saucy and call him Monty...

After a few sprinkles of rain during the night, today is just back to as if it had not rained at all. The endless wind dries everything out as soon as it gets humid. It is really worrying, and there have been several woodland fires over the past few weeks.

Percy or Percival, a knight that rode into battle?...

My suggestion is you call the thing Silver, as in "hi ho Silver".

Well done on trying the Shoprider and it will give you so much more freedom if you like it. I will have no qualms about getting one when I have to give up driving. Catriona

I don't know what an "invalid carriage" is but I'm guessing it's what we, in America, call a "motorized wheelchair". I'm with Gill...I like the name Percy. ~Andrea xoxo

No, not Percy! It reminds me of the Hywell Bennett film.

But Percival would be OK.

Yes very much looking forward to seeing Roger over on John's blog, especially as we have a young westie pup at the moment- his name is Stan - how would that be for your new wheels?

We call Shopriders "scooters" here in Canada. I think it would be a wonderful addition to your life. From what I know of them, it's important to get one that is the right fit. My mother struggled to get on and off hers and soon lost her nerve to drive it. If you feel comfortable with this one, I think you should snap it up. What about naming it after a famous UK horse- "Red Rum?"

Hope the Shoprider works out for you. Anything that helps you get out and about is great.

What about Elvis?

I'm liking Silver.

I was going to suggest Percy too. The Shoprider sounds perfect for you and will give you confidence as well as independence. I hope I haven't missed too many posts as I have just this minute been reconnected to the Internet. Hope you get the required amount of rain soon. I think we are due one to two downpours in the coming days.

That is marvellous news. My sister-in-law took to hers like a duck to water. It has given her such independance and she goes into her nearby small town whenever she wants now. If I ever have one it's name will be Horace.
We too are looking forward to John's new Pup. xx

If it begins to run away from you, maybe it should be called 'Fenton'; as in the famous video!

I suggest Henry as the name for your new steed. That name has always sounded so steady and dependable to me. Well done on your bravery, too!!
Oh, yes, Roger will be a bundle of joy and source of laughter, won't he?

Hugs!

Henry was my father's name - fitted him like a glove.

I rather like suggestion by Rachel - and Aonymouss of Silver - he will be rather like the lone ranger anyway.

Oh how wonderful to add Silver or Percy or whomever to the family! You never fail to amaze and inspire me. 👍🏻 And he might even be a little more stable in a breeze but please test him carefully. What joy. Here’s hoping the much needed rains are steady and gentle, And, yes I’m eagerly awaiting John’s new little bundle of joy and mischief. What a great start to the week. Thank you.

Latane Barton said...

you will have so much more mobility and that's a great thing.

Percy! Perambulating with Percy. Is there a basket for carrying things?

I’m for Silver as well. It’s got style!

Anne Brew - sorry that was me. I keep forgetting to enter my name. X

We, too, are in drought conditions. They predict rain for Wednesday. Oddly, each rain prediction is a few sprinkles and not much real rain. The one 30 minute heavy rainfall immediately soaked into the ground and made little difference. The Shoprider sounds excellent; if you like it, you should definitely buy it. I like Julian for a name; it goes well with P. Roger must be home by now and I look forward to seeing a photo. Sweet Roger.

So happy for your new addition to the family! I, too, like Percy or Percival, they seem a good fit with Priscilla. I also like Rupert, Parley, Phillip, Max, or Henry. I'm sure you'll find the perfect fit soon. Sending wishes for happy traveling and easier ways to get around for you.

The Weaver of Grass said...

Thank you for the suggestions - plenty to think about.

Isn't Roger adorable?

Amanda said...

If you have Priscilla, may I suggest Elvis?

Rambler said...

I've just seen Roger. For a 6-months-old pup, he looks very 'steady' and wise; I really can't imagine him getting into mischief or causing chaos. Albert and the girls have already sorted the order of things and all were settled by the evening. The cottage looks an oasis of calm.
I look forward to reading of your excursions and adventures on your new steed - an excellent purchase for you. Happy days!

A scooter! What fun. And mobility!

Granny Sue said...

So happy about the scooter! I am imagining you zipping around on it! And sorry about the lack of rain. I was rather appalled to hear on the news that golf courses could be watered while no other watering was allowed. Here, we have been drowning in rain... so much that it has really affected the productivity of our vegetable gardens, and there have been floods everywhere. Such strange weather the world has these days.

Percival.

Debby said...

That's funny. I was reading up through the comments and see that Percival has been suggested.

Tom Stephenson said...

That sounds good, Weave. Out and about again!

Brenda said...

Good luck..sounds good…I have never heard of naming scooters but whatever you do will be fun…

Anonymous said...

Its got to be Elvis !!

Anonymous said...

Tongue in cheek here, but if some suggest Priscilla and some prefer Elvis, I suggest you combine the two, and call your scooter Pelvis ! -Pam.

Miles sounds like a genteel enough name for a Priscilla along with a tiny pun on a traveling aid.
