Weather again

I fell asleep after my lunch and woke up half way through the News which was still about the weather and how it had reached over forty degrees at Heathrow.   I was very thirsty and didn't feel at all well.           Now, at three o.clock and several glasses of water later I am almost back to normal and a strong hot wind has got up.

It is now bed time and I feel more or less alright although there is no doubt that the very hot weather (forty degrees) has really taken it out of me today.  Our Falls at Aysgarth on the  River Swale in Swaledale have dried up completely - something which doesn't happen often.

I'll be back on form tomorrow - slightly cooler this evening.

Way too hot for you guys

Drinking extra water during extreme heat really does make a difference, as you noted, Weaver. It is difficult to imagine England being as hot as Arizona. I do hope that it cools down for you soon. I don't do well in hot weather either. You've been in my thoughts.

Fluids ... and more fluids ... I'm amazed at how much the heat takes out of your body. I hope you wake perkier tomorrow.

There is no escaping the heat and it is oppressive. Let's hope it breaks soon. We all must keep sipping water and stay well hydrated. The coolness of the night should provide some relief. Until tomorrow?

I haave been told that senior citizens (those of us of a certain age) sometimes lose our ability to know when we are thirsty as soon as we should have. Therefore, it is very important to drink water even if we don't think we need it. I am not quite as "senior" as you but at 81 I need to heed this advice, as sometimes I, too, feel off kilter and then realize I am in need of water.

Yes, we seniors need to stay hydrated and I drink ice tea throughout the day. If and when we get a heat wave I am reminding myself now to get in a cool shower when needed. Stay cool.

I tried to sleep yesterday afternoon, but couldn't. I'm hoping it might be cooler today.

Glad you are back to normal Pat, also I think sleep is disturbed by the heat and messes up our routines. But hopefully it will rain soon and cool everything down.

Late afternoon, when the heat was intense here on Sheppey, I walked to the beach, just 5 mins away and joined hundreds of other people having a swim.
First time I've bothered to do that for about 10 years but it was thoroughly enjoyable.

I recently remembered that when Mum was getting " old" the nurses used to pinch the skin on the back of her hand to check how hydrated she was. I looked it up and it is a proper way to check. The pulled up skin should go back to normal quickly if you are OK. Have been trying it on myself and yesterday when I drank lots, it def. went back quicker. Something to do for you maybe to keep a check?

Drink and sleep and be thankful for waking up to wanting to do something.

We did not quite reach 40C in Ripon yesterday, but 38/39 was definitely more than enough, and record-breaking!
I slept for part of the afternoon; not much else I could do.
Much more pleasant here today at around 25C, meeting friends for a pub lunch later.
I hope you slept well and are feeling good today, Pat.

We are wilting in so many parts of the world. This heat is atrocious! Yesterday, I filled up two wading pools for our big dog and threw in treats to motivate him to step in and cool off. He mostly hangs out in the air conditioning with me but I thought he needed a little entertainment. As I watched him splashing around I had a strong urge to hop into one of the wading pools myself... floating treats and all.

Tuesday was brutal and I didn't stir outside or do very much inside. Today has been much cooler thank goodness and I have done shopping, laundry and even used the vacuum cleaner. I must have the cleanest kidneys ever after all the water I have been drinking during the past few days! Glad you are feeling better and hope today (Wednesday) will be the same. Hoping for some rain, or should I be careful what I hope for?!

Good advice, here. Another bit of information: if you are terribly thirsty, you are already dehydrated. Important to drink water all day long. Sometimes even those drinks with electrolytes, like Gatorade. We seniors suffer terribly from the heat. Hope today is better for you.
