Everything at a standstill.

The world seems to have stopped here and everyone has got off.  People who live on this estate seem to have heeded the advice to work from home today if they can avoid going in. I have done more or less nothing today.   This morning my very dear friends S and T called and T put down ant bait in front of my airbricks ;there were ants aplenty scuttling about there yesterday.   Not an ant to be seen today but I feel safe in the knowledge that I have handed the problem over to T.   Some men are reliable to hand over any job to - luckily both of my husbands could turn their hand to anything - and friend T is the same.   I am lucky to have him as a friend.   I am useless.

I was reminded of a school I worked in many many years ago where another teacher and I were left in charge while the Head and the Deputy took most of the school out somewhere -forgotten where.   While they were out something went wrong with some device or other and the electric plug needed changing and neither of us knew how to do it.   The Head's words still echo in my ears all these years later when she returned.  "I don't know - two grown women and neither of them able to change a plug!"

Too late to learn now I think don't you?   See you tomorrow.

I have changed plugs but I think the wiring has changed in recent years. Luckily I could assemble the very reasonable electric fan I bought three days ago which is very good. I haven't set foot outside since Saturday and am definitely no going out tomorrow. I think rain is forecast for us on Wednesday so might go out and cool off.

A lot of pressure on men to get it right with tasks and repairs I think, and my husband is always pleased if it goes without problems.
I remember once though, when shifting house in our twenties, he bundled some large paintings together, and thought he would hold them together with a bike inner tube stretched over the package. "I"m a damn genius" he said proudly, before it flew off and the valve hit him in the eye, nearly taking it out.- Pam.

Some people are more mechanically inclined and can fix anything. I'm generally hopeless. That said, recently I've used YouTube videos successfully to change a brake light in my car and fix a loose connection on my John Deere lawn tractor. In the height of the pandemic, I had to replace my wall oven and nobody could do the install before an important holiday. I found a video on how to remove and install a wall oven and managed to do it with a friend. Using YouTube, I'm a little less hopeless! I agree fully, staying inside during the heatwave is most important.

I used to be able to change a plug but haven't needed to do so for quite some time now. As Susan said, I can generally find a whole host of useful information on YouTube, although instructions on how to change the water filter on our fridge freezer are proving elusive.

I hear it's dreadful over there. Not too much better in northern Colorado. 103 F / 39.4 C today and I am thankful for my air conditioning. Quite unusual for our area to get this hot.

I used to be quite handy with projects -- I didn't want to be a helpless female. Now that I'm a senior, I'm helpless, I know it, and I don't care. I have a wonderful handyman that takes care of all sorts of things.

Please stay cool and drink water! That's what I'm doing it. By the way, I see your blog title all the time on newdharmabums (good friends of mine). Glad I stopped in.

Dear Pat, I hope your rooms are reasonably cool so that you can sleep well tonight.
We‘ve been surprised to notice some shops here in town close early or not open at all today because of the heat - totally unhard of back home, no matter how hot (or cold) it gets. Only sickness or pandemic regulations will make shop keepers close during their regular hours in my home town - and maybe a week or two every year around Christmas or in the middle of the summer holidays.

Both my father and my sweet hubby could/can do all manner of repair jobs, from cars, to appliances, to painting, to carpentry, and beyond. I am well spoiled!
Drink lots of cool liquids and have salty snacks while it's so hot to keep your "fluids and electrolytes" well balanced so you feel good.
The center of my green/cream Single Irish Chain quilt is together as of 30 minutes ago and I am well pleased!!

Hugs!

We were taught to change a plug in first year Physics. No such thing as a helpless female allowed in my all girls school!

Libraran - we are just not used to weather like this here in The Dales - we soon give in to it.

Actuallly Tasker the Head was a formidable woman.

I'm afraid it's so much easier to ask 'some man' to do things, that many women don't bother to learn. I know one such woman very well.

It could be 'flying ant day' for your ants, when nuptials are performed! As for plugs, I still have problems with right sized fuses for the plug, will the electricity short?

Men generally find women attractive who don't know these things so you have always been quids in on the male front Weave. There is no getting away from it however many changes take place in society, men still prefer helpless women. I bet Greta Thunberg knows to say she can't change a plug when there's a man about.

Can't agree with you there Rachel, I much prefer women to be not only attractive but also proud enough and intelligent enough to be able to do things for themselves.

I think in the main men prefer dumb blonds whatever they say but I accept your view to the contrary. Perhaps you are still searching for your perfectly formed capable woman and your three ex wives never quite reached the mark.

You're probably right re. dumb blondes. My first wife had cascading red/auburn hair and I've been inclined to that colour hair ever since.
My three ex-wives were all remarkable women, who I still get on OK with even now, no, it was me who never reached the mark, I always struggled with living with somebody seven days a week. My current partner and I normally only see each other once a fortnight and that has worked just right for the last ten years.

My Mom was the handy one in our home when I was growing up so I always had the attitude that I could fix things. Now I do ask my son to help sometimes but really I am just being lazy! :)

I shall inform my friend T that it was possibly flying ant day Thelma - thank you for the reminder.

Thanks everyone. xx

Tim can fix almost anything. I'm his assistant. I fetch things and 'hold this right here like that'.
