Busy

My usual day for the hairdresser is on a Thursday but this week it was a Friday - Market Day.    My taxi driver was very harrassed when he collected me this morning because schools in West Yorkshire have broken up and the tourist busses have begun coming through our little town in profusion.    They all stop in our little town because they usually go to Hawes to look round The Wensleydale Creamery factory making cheese and our town is a good stopping off point for morning coffee.   My taxi driver gets irate at the way the tourists hover on the kerb deciding which way to go and which cafe  to choose for their morning coffee

But of course these tourists are the life blood of our town.   Without them our Friday market would mostly die out and many of our small shops would probably close so they are sorely needed.   In winter it can be bleak up here and nobody chooses to come in the bad weather.

I was tempted to go into town after my hair was done and before I rang for my taxi but it is a fair walk and even the temptation of strawberries and peaches was not enough to persuade me.

Very hot weather is forecast for this weekend but today there has been a sharp wind and a cardigan has been needed - so we shall see.    Until tomorrow dear friends........

I understand the frustration about your town's tourist visitors. We regularly have several coach tours a day dropping off visitors and it can be difficult to get on with our day to day errands at times. However, our local businesses need the income so we must get on with it as best we can.

Peninsula has the very same situation. Tourists during the week and ten times on weekends. Take up all the parking in town, off load their bikes and ride the trails all day. Recently Council instituted a better system than parking meters of old. It is a phone app. You can rent the place for several hours, but if you go over, you pay the fine. All with your phone.

It's very hot here for us. 30 C or 88 F. I don't like hot weather.

How lovely it would be to need a cardigan instead of a glass of ice tea and a fan!

You can imagine what Brighton is like on a warm weekend. London empties, as Brighton fills!

That is the problem with tourists: Even if you don´t like them, you need them. And we must not forget that all of us are or have been tourists sometimes, too.

It's the same everywhere, isn't it; tourists are a curse and a blessing, and most of us have been tourists themselves at some point or other.
My sister and I will be tourists for the next two weeks - but at least we won't take up any parking space! We'll just bring a bit of money into the pockets of our landlord in Ripon, and to the shops and eating places there :-)

I don't really mind the tourists who hover on the pavements, it's the one's who step out into the road, without even looking, which worry me. Xx

We all seem agreed that we have to tolerate the tourists for the money they bring into our places - many of whom wouldn't survive without them.

Hebden Bridge is always heaving when we go there, Tod not so much. There again it might all change when they put all the cobbles back down ;) Round here it is walking country, so what we have are cafes but nothing upmarket and definitely no tourist shops but we do have public vegetables and flower growing all round town..

I live in Cornwall - 'nuff said about tourists/emmets. Especially when they come in huge motorhomes which do not fit our many narrow, winding lanes. It's as though people never check out where they are going and try to avoid country lanes. Me? I hibernate for the summer season; very grateful for my home and garden and grocery deliveries.

Like Rambler said, motorhomes are the worst problem, especially when they park along the sea front here, in places that are not suitable or allowed and then stay there for several days. Some really do have a serious attitude problem.

Hot here Pat... Hot and oh so dry... Storms just go around us... Come right up to us.. sprinkle us or show off their lightning display, laugh and go around us.. Right at or up over 100F every day.. Something has got to give and i hope its not our power grid as i NEED the aircondition..lol Glad to hear you got out and got your hair done... I bet those strawberries and peaches would have been divine.. I'm sorry you did not get some..

My favorite little town about a 2 hr ride from us is Fredericksburg, TX.. Its a tourist town and absolutely swamped in Summer.. We avoid it then... I like to visit but i wouldn't want to live there.. I like to go in Spring and Fall.. Winter time alot of the shops close down.. I rarely buy anything there but i love to window shop and maybe go in a few.. Now you've made me excited to go there again.. lol Take care dear Pat stay cool in your upcoming hot weather. Hugs! deb

I have spent holidays in some delightful places and often said to a cafe owner or shopkeeper that they must love it when we all go home however, each time I have voiced my thoughts to them they always said 'don't be sorry, we need you'.
Right now I am not sorry to be in my own little home, blinds partly drawn, windows open and no plans to go anywhere! Keep cool.
