Book Group

Sadly, S whose book choice it was, was unable to come to book group because he woke up with a bad cold.  Also, after singing the praises of the Jan Morris book I was the only one who found it an unqualified success  But we had a really good discussion on it and that is the important thing.

There has been an improvement in the weather and I was able to get out for a walk with Priscilla straight after lunch.   I must get back into condition and I found the strength this afternoon to walk round the block again, which is a start.

Like so many of you in Blogland I am finding it impossible to watch the News.   I feel I can do nothing and I find it all so distressing.   Am I cowardly for avoiding it?   I am trying instead to concentrate on some of the beauty in the world.   The Spring is showing itself at last - my garden is alive with golden crocus and they are giving me such pleasure.

I'll be back tomorrow,   Until then........

What you take in with your eyes and ears feeds you and affects you as much as the food you eat. We should be very aware of this and exercise the right to choose what we watch and listen to without guilt.

Interesting about the book. I am glad you had divided feedback. A healthy sign.

Exchanging viewpoints is always good and opposing views often make it a robust exchange. Good for you for having a walk. A nice day provides the motivation we all need.

Not watching the news either. So glad you could take a walk. It always makes me feel better. My daffodils are beginning to bloom and the martins ( birds) have returned. A sign of spring though we’re due another freeze this week.

Thousands of refugees streaming into Poland. God only knows what that madman might do in retaliation against the Poles for their generosity and compassion. The all of it makes me so sad, I feel like crying. Coming on the heels of Covid/isolation, I’m so tired of feeling helpless and hopeless. And, I feel guilty because in comparison I live the life of luxury. It's yet another reminder to appreciate what you have.

I have just been listening to a review of Jan Morris's 'Coronation Everest' on Radio 4 Extra. It might be one for your Christmas present list.

It is always interesting to compare notes; how different people perceive the same book, same film, same place. How unfortunate for the man whose choice it was, that he was unable to attend this meeting.
Thumbs up on picking up your walking routine again, Pat!

I'm glad you had a good discussion on your book club. It's too bad S could not be there. How nice you were able to get out and walk some. You are not cowardly for avoiding the news, not at all. You are wisely protecting your own health. I watch some each day but I have to limit it because so much of it is heartbreaking and I can't do anything about it. Spring arriving in your garden sounds beautiful! Enjoy!

Well we all choose what to write Pat and you should feel no guilt about not listening. I listened to Jan Morris's book. Of course it was a random selection of thoughts to cover each day. Perhaps not the most brilliant of subjects but a bit like blog jottings. ;)

There are no easy answers about engaging/non engaging with world affairs. For me it is donating money to Red Cross (Ukraine) and Salvation Army (NSW floods) and recognising that there is not much I can do in practical terms. It is raining as I type this and I feel for all who are suffering.

Weaver, I was at the same point as you, when I could not hear to watch the news. It is horrible. But suddenly, in the midst of all of the horror, I am seeing amazing courage, compassion, an outpouring of sweetness. The horror is there. So is beauty.

Concentrate on what's in front of you Pat, a Spring day, flowers in bloom, getting out for a walk. The Ukraine business is horrendous but best left to those bloggers that think that they have all the answers.

I, too, can't watch the news but still am trying to do what little I can, donating to organizations who can do things. I am proud of my daughter,Siri, who is a florist and has set up a fund raiser for a flower farm in Kyiv whose greenhouses have been destroyed. If anyone is curious about this project checkout The Little Banana on Instagram. I'm also following other fund raising ideas such as renting Air B and Bs in Ukraine that you won't use to get funds to people. And buying digital art from Ukrainians on Etsy.

I try to keep up with what's happening without getting overloaded, which is difficult. I'm not watching the news on the telly.
