Late

I have been totally lacking in any form of inspiration today.   Several times I have put on my laptop to perform various jobs - adding to my Tesco order, paying a bill, checking my e mails - my hand has hovered over my blog but I couldn't think of anything inspiring to write so have switched off.   Now I am on my way to bed and can still think of little to say.

I did watch Michael Palin's Around the World in 80 days - I don't know when it was made but Palin is a young man with young kids who come with his wife to see him off on his journey.   I shall enjoy it - it will be interesting to watch that and the other 'new' version on at the same time.   I love travel programmes above all else, especially now that I can no longer travel.   Rather like my dear old dad, who loved all gardening programmes and yet was really an armchair gardener and had to often be bullied by my mother in the veggie garden.

Until lunch time today it was a pouring wet day here and so absolutely nobody about.   Late in the day it stopped but no sun appeared.   H next door called after walking round the block and came in for a cup of tea.   As usual we had a good old natter about 'the old days' in this case about illness and doctors in our childhood - all those illnesses which have more or less disappeared these days but were almost death sentences to children and young people in our day = polio, diphtheria, TB, pneumonia and the like.     And we marvelled at the introduction of antibiotics and vaccinations - and we remembered the old M and B tablets - were they the first anti biotics - we weren't really sure?

It seems to me we were all so glad to have the vaccines and treatments in those days. I have no idea what has got into people nowadays to refuse to be vaccinated!

I listened to Michael Palin as Norman in 'The Dresser' this morning. He is a good actor, but very unassuming for all that. Freddie Jones played the classical actor as 'Sir' and they were both very good. Palin is a genuine all-rounder and a likeable chap as well!

Palin's travel shows are excellent and can be reliably very informative. It's going to be full on winter for January and February. Up until now, our weather has been unusually mild. Today has been below freezing with a brilliant clear blue sky and not a cloud to be seen. It was great for hiking in the forest with my dog.

I remember my mother's reaction when as an adult I told her that the penicillin tablets my doctor prescribed when I was three or four or five, and had to be dissolved under my tongue were so bitter that I immediately went to the living room and consigned my tablet down the grate to the furnace. Mom sighed and said did I know those cost a dollar apiece. This was the forties.

No-one rioted about the Polio vaccination. We were simply told to stand in line; and it was done.

Cro makes a valid point, I recall the same happening with TB jabs. One day while at school, we were told to line up in Assembly and were all given our TB jabs. None of the public debates and hoo-ha that are happening now with regards to the Covid jabs, with parents and all kinds of medical "experts" getting involved.

I wonder if certain tennis players who make such a fuss about having vaccinations are equally unwilling to have a pain-killing jab when they need one to complete a match. Either way Mr and Mrs Djokovic must have been incredibly prescient when they named their son Novak (no vac!).

No, we never questioned those vaccines, they were done for our benefit and it was one worry less for our parents, knowing we were safe from certain diseases.

Michael Palin is such a lovely person...he brings so much from the people he met all over the world

My mum told me about the M and B tablets. She had them as a young girl before the war. She said they gave her hallucinations where she saw rats running around the room. It scared her to death.

Polio and TB as you say almost a death sentence to all ages, iron lung, leg irons, death. Unlike a cold that is going about at the moment causing a lot of fuss.

M&B must be good ol' May & Baker.

I don't remember being given any tablets, just jabs, including some that seemed to have multi-needles. I have no idea what they were for - we went to school, were told to line up, and just had them administered. Parents didn't question anyone's authority to do such things!

Hello: I noticed your query on Red's blog regarding the use of the term Inuit and the fact that Eskimo is no longer viewed as acceptable. I did not wish to take the liberty of replying on his blog, so I came to your page. The term Eskimo is in fact considered as offensive as the N word is to a black person. It has not been used for many years now. For the first time ever, our Governor General is an Inuit, and a good thing it is too. Good Inuit art is highly prized and if you have some you are very fortunate. With my best wishes. David

I will never understand how people think their 'research' has turned up information that the medical field with all the years of education and research has not yet turned up. No parent would have thought of refusing vaccine for their children. Now suddenly, the medical field is not to be trusted, and 'big pharma' is conspiring against us.

I heard someone tell me, an educated person, that pregnant women are getting the vaccine and having babies born with damaged hearts. The alternative is babies born with covid, and getting damaged hearts, according to here. I was shocked to hear this and thought perhaps people were getting other information not available to us in my country. Yet, as much as I read, I cannot find one thing to back that up. Where is this information coming from?

That would have probably been the small pox vaccine that leaves the small round scar on one of your upper arms.

I watch gardening shows as well but my biggest addiction are the vet shows. My husband gets up and resignedly heads for our second tv room when he sees Dr. Pol's cheery smile on the tv screen...and the converter is in my hand.

In answer to Veg Artist, I think the multi-needle jab was to do with TB to see if you reacted to the vaccine.
As for David's comments, well I'm flabbergasted.

Thank you so much for your blog. Today's post as of all of yours was very enjoyable.

The first small pox preventative I recall was fluid dripped on a sugar cube and handed out in a fascinating pleated paper cup; we were taken to a nearby town to get it as ours didn't yet have supplies. Next time it was an actual shot, at the same nearby town's school, followed excitingly by a lollipop. My aunt's husband died of polio, and both of her daughters were got it and lived the rest of their lives with one leg shorter than the other; they were fortunate not to have a more severe after math, I guess, and did not develop post-polio syndrome as older people, which can be very serious. So my parents were very glad to get polio preventatives for their kids. I don't recall if it was available for adults or not.

Commenting on an earlier comment, I follow evolving medical data very closely and there is no evidence, after a year of vaccines, of birth defects related to covid vaccinations during pregnancy.

I think David G missed the point of why Weave asked Red i.e. because I believes Red once lived amongst the Eskimos and would have good knowledge of them and it was interesting that he used the word Eskimo himself and his input would have been interesting. The inuit definitions and info as the pc brigade would like it is easily accessible via Google.

I remember the polio vaccination, lump of sugar and then it was gone. Except in my case I developed symptoms, aching limbs and high fever. Several doctors came to inspect me but I recovered. The alternative, an iron lung, does not bear thinking about.
