Inspiration

I am lacking in it today and now - on my way to bed - I am sitting here trying to think of something to chat about.   It is the first time I have had time today - friends S and T  came for  coffee this morning, no meal from my carer today for the microwave as my carer's oven has broken and she is having a new one fitted today.   Friend D with her mother came for a cup of tea and a chocolate eclair this afternoon and then there was Country File, Antiques Road Show and, of course, Strictly semi final to watch.   I had to agree with the judges that this year the standard is so high that it is really impossible now to choose.

Now, at a quarter to eleven I have come to get ready for bed.   I am gradually getting more and more used to my new hearing aids and they are certainly very successful.   Each day they feel more familiar in my ears and I expect that in about a fortnight - like with all new things - I shall be totally used to them.

The weather has turned just a little bit warmer but there is a lot of cloud and it is drizzling on and off.  As I said the other day - we are almost to the shortest day.   Then there is a week or two when the change is hardly noticeable and then suddenly people start  saying 'the days are drawing out' and we start looking out for the snowdrops.

And speaking of Spring bulbs, I now have two lovely bowls of hyacinths - one red hyacinths and one deep blue .   In  addition I have a lovely Poinsettia - all three Christmas presents.   Now all I have to remember is the hyacinths must never dry out and need to be kept  damp but  well-drained and Poinsettias need watering sparingly.   If I can manage to do that I might keep all three into the New Year.

Dearest Pat,
You sound rather bubbly so your day was a good one.
Indeed, in about nine days we will be adding minutes to our daylight and it accumulates fast as the days go by.
Looking out to the spring flowers is always such a joy.
Hugs,
Mariette

These early nights are horrible, by 4.30 pm it's already dark. Some of our newly planted bulbs are sprouting.... things are looking up.

So who won Strictly, was it your favourite?
And have you now sussed out your new hearing aids? My Dad has a pair now, too - his first ever, and it is amazing what a difference they make to his partaking in conversation! My Mum does all the technical things, he wouldn‘t be able to handle them on his own, but they are a great team.
Milder weather here as well, but precious little sun. With the very early darkness, it is really not easy to catch a bit of daylight, so important for physical and mental wellbeing. Most days I can manage a quick walk over lunch break before getting back to work, and only this week and next is left to work this year, then I‘ll have two weeks off over Christmas and New Year.

I noticed some little green shoots poking through the ground in the churchyard yesterday. Those spring days will be upon us before we know it. X

Your mention of bulbs reminded an act of faith I embarked upon in October. My dad, 80, and my dear mom, 75, both became very ill with Covid this past September. I went to their home to help in their care, meals and home up-keep. By early October, my mom was very ill in the hospital and not responding to any treatment. Each day she became worse. The doctors asked for us to prepare for the possibility that she will not survive.
I was at the pharmacy picking-up medicine for my dad when I saw a bag of lacy pink tulip bulbs. I bought them and found a spot near their back patio and planted a dozen bulbs. I remember thinking, she won't die, there are beautiful tulips for her to find. They have now both recovered and are slowly getting their strength back. I look forward to hearing about the surprise tulips next April.

Good to hear that the new hearing aids are doing the job. My mother had a friend who gave her hyacinths every Christmas for years. We planted them out in the garden when they had finished flowering where they survived and thrived.

I am so very happy that your hearing aids are working out so well! I like blooming flowers inside during the winter. My little hibiscus tree is putting on such a nice show, one flower at a time. It delights me every time one opens.

DEVON, that was a lovely thing to do, we all need hope and something to look forward to and you gave them both with the tulip bulbs.

Pat ... my Snowdrops are already peeing through!! I need to put them in a bigger pot, they were transplanted to a smallish plant pot when we moved house and I never got round to repotting them while they were dormant.

Working in a garden center Pat i have found that poinsettias like to dry out nearly completely... then a good soaking water... but don't let them sit in water.. drain off the extra then let it dry out again.. and so on.. It was always a battle to make it through watering all the poinsettias just to turn around and start again from the beginning.... The trick was to water them just enough so you didn't have to turn around and go back and dump the water out..because we are talking hundreds of plants here...they wouldn't allow us to cut holes in the decorative paper so they could drain on their own... what a job but one i remember of comradery with fellow waterers... long talks to pass the time and friendships made... I have one of those amaryllis covered in wax gifted to me... such a shame that once they have bloomed i have to throw it away...seems such a waste.. Enjoy your holidays Pat! Hugs! debs

I am embracing winter this year for a change. I have never liked letting go of summer and autumn but have suddenly found pleasure in wrapping up and going for my daily walk. Having said that, I shall look forward to spring flowers and blossoms. It is my favourite time of year.
I love hyacinths but only in the garden. Their wonderful perfume is overpowering to me when they are indoors.
Pleased to hear the hearing aids are settling in well.
