Full

It is a long time since I felt as full as this.   I have just eaten a three course meal brought by my carer - cooked by her mother.   Good, plain Yorkshire food, well-cooked (and well-eaten).  I don't feel as though I ever wish to eat aagain.   Prawn cocktail, turkey with pigs (minus the blankes), gravy, stuffing, roast and mashed potatoes, sprouts, swede mashed, roast parsnips, peas  and finally Christmas pudding and brandy sauce.   I shall make the coffee and sit and drink it (to keep myself awake while I watch Strictly)

I did watch The Queen - did you?   I thought what a stalwart she is.   She looks very old today - missing Prince Phillip - the first year is always the worst.  But she does keep going through  thick and thin.

I have gone through widowhood twice - once after 39 years and once after 23 years.   On the whole one doesn't think about it until it happens - luckily. And happen to us all it does - either we are the  one  to stay or the one to go.  And we have little choice over which it is.

It will soon be new year - only another week and then we start with a clean slate.   Let's hope for reasonable weather through the next eight weeks, plenty of sunshine and as little snow as is possible.

Enjoy the rest of the holiday.

Well some of us wont if we're not married. There 's a nice programme on about Quentin Blake on BBC 2 at the moment.

I'm so glad your carer and her mother made such a wonderful Christmas meal to share with you! Full indeed and oh, so yummy!

Happy Christmas, dear Pat!

Hugs!

I didn't think the Queen looked or sounded 95 and I was thinking what a great job her haidresser had made of her hair. Funny how an 89 year old saw it differently.

O.K. and I have been back about an hour from his sister‘s very sumptuous and delicious Christmas dinner. Like you, I feel as if I won‘t ever be hungry again. But I know that tomorrow morning, I will look forward to coffee and cookies in bed before we will have our actual breakfast.
Wet and grey here, and relatively mild at about 8C. Not the kind of weather lending itself to a nice long walk or hike.
Widowhood - I experienced it once, less than 5 years after we were married.

It sounds like your Christmas food was absolutely delicious, Weaver, and I'm happy you're "full to the guinea bone", as my husband's mother used to say. *haha* I haven't watched the Queen's address yet but I surely will, even though I live in America. I wish she was our ruler, for sure!! What a woman!!! Merry Christmas to you & yours. It's rainy here too, in northern-most Indiana... which is very unusual for this time of year. It rained so hard during the night last night, that if it had been snow we'd find ourselves buried this morning! ~Andrea xoxo

Can there be anybody else in the country that gets the equal of a restuarant meal as part of a carer package. All the carers that I've seen round here struggle to even say hello, but then they only get paid a pittance. Good luck to Pat.

I don't know what conception or misconception you are under Andrea, if any, but much as we might like her to be, the Queen is not our ruler either.

Dearest Pat,
Merry Christmas to you!
What a thoughtful and caring Mother of your Caretaker to cook you a full three-course meal. That is called labor of love!
Hugs,
Mariette

Your dinner sounded scrumptious. I'm still waiting for my in-laws to arrive so my dinner must wait. They are notoriously late and we are all getting hungry. I'm looking forward to the part of the evening you have now reached... the meal done, the plates tidied and the tv on.
Thank you for your reply to my comment re. my mother. It felt like a big, warm hug.
Merry Christmas, Pat! Enjoy your evening.

I am glad that you had such a satisfying Christmas. We've just sent off the first round of guests and I've got the second lasagna in for round two. It's a long day, but a pleasant one. I'm looking forward to phone calls with the family that can't be here. That will begin tomorrow.

I'm glad your Christmas meal was outstanding. A festive meal seems to lead to eating more than usual. Nobody can resist a well prepared, tasty meal. Enjoy your day.

Rachel - the Queen's hair is always beautifully done isn't it. I just thought she looked as though she had lost a lot of weight - around her shoulders and neck mostly. Grief takes it out of one and perhaps she has not eaten well this year. For 95 she is amazing.

Thank you all for Christmas wishes.

I see. I did not notice that but I was looking at her brooch and her lovely red dress and her beautifully coiffed hair.

I'm glad that you enjoyed your Christmas. That was one huge dinner. I haven't listened to the Queen for many , many years. My parents would never miss her. She always came on very early in the morning. So in another 30 mins I will have my Christmas dinner. The Micro Manager is the chief cook.

An ample and delicious meal Pat, thank goodness for the kindness of people. The Queen's speeches always have to be thought out when she addresses the nation and this time she allowed some of her private feelings to be felt I think.

I thought the Queen looked wonderful. Was never much of a fan when she had that higher-pitched girl-like voice, and hard helmet hairstyle, but she has softened, mellowed, and now has that lovely softer white hair and her tone has the touch of someone who
has been through family challenges and griefs, reinstating to us the joys that children bring in with new perspective and rejuvinitive hopes. Good on her. I used to tolerate the Queen's Christmas Day speech. This year I looked forward to it. She has always provided a sense of stability in an ever-changing world.- Pam, Aust.

Loved the queen’s speech…beautiful…first Christmas living in Florida…did spend it here before visiting family…last year living in Indiana…missed them this year… different…I have lived in so many places…love your blog as always…

At last, I can breathe again, the worst day of my year is now behind me and it's Boxing Day and life starts to become normal again. If only it would brighten up and stop raining, one day of sunshine in a couple of weeks is very depressing.

The Weaver of Grass said...

Pam I do agree with what you say/
Yes Thelma this time I agree she spoke 'from the heart'

Thanks everyone for taking time to pop over on a busy day.

I thought the queen looked a lot thinner and sadder, she has been through so much this year, and only other widows and widowers can truly appreciate what that is. Although her hair and makeup were beautiful it looked as though she had grown more slight since the dress had been made. My heart went out to hear and even Alan had tears in his eyes at her words.

Rachel, I think your words are quite harsh towards Andrea. Our Queen may not be our 'ruler' but she is a wonderful figurehead to our country, one that those in many other countries are quite envious of.

Rachel Phillips said...

Yes she is a wonderful figurehead and I love her dearly but it is erroneous for people to believe that she has a say in the decision making of our country because she doesn't, so harsh no, just explaining to a person living overseas. Call it educating. She may speak to our prime ministers once a week, but change their minds about things, I think not. A lot of sweeping statements are made on social media, they need to be clarified sometimes.

The Weaver of Grass said...

I agree Rachel and it is partly because of this that I admire her reading throuh all the documents at the age she is.

I feel rather as you do, and thoroughly enjoyed the Christmas dinner my youngest daughter cooked for me. She and my son-in-law arrived complete with all ingredients, and their little Jack Russell. I spent a delightful time being very lazy and cuddling the dog. We watched the Queen's Speech and thought she had lost weight. Hardly surprising - what an amazing lady she is. Thinking about eating healthily once more as soon as the left overs have been dealt with!

That sounds absolutely delicious, I'm not surprised you feel stuffed.
I have eaten far too much cheese :) X
