Christmas

Yes. it is coming whether we like it or not and preparations have to be made whether we are doing anything special or not.   So I made a start today, wrote a series of letters to put into cards, wrote a few cheques for grandchildren and great grandchildren to put into their cards, addressed all the envelopes and got them ready for posting.   One big, and time consuming, job done.  As I am actually doing nothing special at Christmas once I get present buying and wrapping out of the way that will be a big weight off my mind.    Surprising how tiring I found it.

Friends S and T called after lunch with a delightful present - four red hyacinths ( still in early bud so hopefully will not be open before Christmas if I keep them fairly cool).   They are in quite a large 'pretend' tree trunk with a small door in it - and there is a Christmas wreath on the door.   We decided it was the Hobbit's house.   It is books like The Hobbit which keep the magic alive isn't it?

That is two lovely  -plants in one week - first a Poinsettia on Thursday from P and D and now the Hyacinths from S and T  - it really does begin to feel like Christmas.

It has been quite a miserable day here today - dull and often rainy too.  Of course I watched the Strictly results programme - Dan went out at last  I have to say he has had a huge following .  Presumably this is because he is a popular figure on television anyway but he certainly has made huge strides forward with his dancing.   I was sorry to see him go but as it is the semi finals next week it would have been a bit of a travesty to keep him in any longer.

See you tomorrow when, hopefully, I shall have slept well and am feeling a bit more lively.

Your Christmas plants sound festive and perfect for adding cheer to your home. You have thoughtful friends. The countdown has begun and everybody seems busy leading up to the big day. Finishing all your cards and gift/check writing is a good accomplishment. It is great to be able to relax without lots of additional preparation.

It's between Rose (the deaf girl), and the two fellas. My money is on Rose!

I thought that Dan's dance this weekend was terrific and it matched the music perfectly. After one of them being dropped, I thought the two fellas should of at least been in the dance off, rather than Dan but as has always been the case, the public tend to vote for favourites rather than ability. The final will probably bee contested between Rose and the two fellas and hopefully Rose will win.

Here in the States we watch Dancing With the Stars. It's a fun program not to be taken seriously. I'm new to your blog. I'm enjoying reading your posts.

Good on you to have letters and cards written, now you can relax. I agree cheque presents for all those young folk so they can buy whatever they want.

Cheques? It's been at least 15 or 20 years since I last saw one of those!
I have a handful of cards left that want writing and posting.
The gifts for my family that will be handed over on Christmas Eve (our main Christmas event, always) will only be wrapped on the morning of the 24th, but I have all of them ready.

Yes, what the public votes for is not always what our personal choice would have been. I have been watching "The Voice of Germany", a singing competition, and some of those who had to go were really, really good. Needless to say, I didn't vote; I just enjoy watching the show.

Hopefully you woke up well rested this morning, Pat!

It is funny how people make sweeping statements about Christmas. For many there are few, if any, preparations to me made and it will be just another day.

For some reason I've never been able to keep a poinsettia going, but I planted up two batches of bulbs, including hyacinths, a month apart, so hopefully there will be some indoor colour for several weeks. Just got to scrape some moss off the grass and wash it, to put around the bulbs now. Anything to put off writing Christmas cards - a job I do not like!

I was sorry to see Dan go, I always support those who have no dancing ability at all and make great progress. As you say it was time for him to leave and he did so graciously. I am about to venture to the post office with overseas parcels, which regularly has queues out of the door and down the street, its definitely Christmas.

For a lot of people the prep is the best part, leaving them deflated on Boxing Day. This year seems very strange, even compared to last year.

I delay writing cards until I can no longer bear it.

Ooh Hyacinths, I've not had any of them for a few years. They will make your room smell gorgeous. The flowers Alan bought me are doing just that at the moment, but if I see any Hyacinths for sale I might just have to treat myself to a pot.

Those Christmas blooms sound lovely. They will really make your home look festive. I have my cards done too and just have to drop them at the post office. A little more shopping to do and I will be set. I have more decorations to go up but I am taking my time with that. Hope you had a good rest!

I bet your Hobbit House planter is delightful. My brother convinced me to read The Hobbit in my early teens. He also attempted to make me and my sisters Lord of the Rings fans but to no avail. What did stick was our love of the Hobbit house. Every now and then my sister's and I will exchange a photo of a "Hobbity" looking house. After all, who wouldn't love living in one?

I think most of us wish Rose to win - her ability and her grsce are amazing.

Slept well thank you!
