Winter blows in with a vengeance

The first storm of Winter blew in last evening. angry red and orange shaded areas appeared on the map of the country and - sure enough - it all showed up just as it was getting dark and by bed time the storm was  at its height.

One of the advantages (very few I add)of being deaf is that when you go to bed you can take out your hearing aids, arrange the bedcovers so that your 'top' ear is covered and hopefully get to sleep - and I did.

Drawing back the blinds this morning very early (it is my reserve carer) outside was just as I expected - a covering of snow, slushy roads and a tremendously strong wind.   As the morning has progressed the wind has abated a little so it does look as though the storm is on its way south, which is what it is destined to do.

I can't expect any callers today - everyone will be like me and will have battened down the hatches.   It is certainly a day when I am pleased I don't live on the North East Coast.  'Strictly' tonight for those of us who watch it - wonder who'll go out this week?   Dan??

During the night I woke up and heard the wind blowing very strongly around O.K.‘s little cottage, and that‘s in the middle of the village with bigger houses on all sides. It must have been really stormy on the heights of the Black Forest and the open fields.
No snow yet, but two hail, showers already today and some thunder! We managed a quick walk around the village but got quite wet on the way back.

It seems the north east coast had a wild night. I am glad that you were warm and safe...and quiet!

Yes, it's that time of year once again. Thank goodness we all have hatches to batten down, eh? Stay warm & safe! ~Andrea xoxoxo

The rain and wind didn't arrive here in Suffolk until early afternoon and not too blowy, we have got off lightly again I think.
Staying inside is safest

It's batten down the hatched here too. Strom Arwen is in full force in the west... Our neighbour's roof tiles and fascia boards have already been falling on our roof and garden. Despite calling round to tell them they have not even been to see the damage it has caused, let alone try to batten things down - is that me, or is it odd?

Excellent that you slept easily and awoke to no storm damage. We have strong sunshine with a slight white snow covering this morning and it is windy; not a gale, just puffs of steady wind. The wind chill makes for a cold day and it feels like winter. With the strong sun, my home has heated to 80 degrees. It definitely feels like Christmas is near.

We have snow, but it did not come in on the wings of a storm. It is quiet and cold, and I am having a quiet day inside. I've picked the meat from the turkey, and have it simmering in a crock pot with the vegetables. The carcass itself has been dropped in a stock pot with the rest of the bones, 3 cloves of garlic, and a whole onion. It will simmer quietly on the stove top for the day to make a good broth.

The house smells nice, the laundry is chugging, and I'm tidying things at a leisurely pace.

3 inches of snow here this morning.

We seem to have the remains of the storm blustering around the treetops here right now. It's making a good deal of noise but has lost most of its power. When I worked on the farm one of the men always took his hearing aids out when feeding the pigs.

No electricity all day, freezing cold but we had the aga and a wood burn stove to take the chill off. Electricity came on late afternoon just as it was getting dark. The thing to remember is matches for lighting candles, all the shops were closed. You seem to have missed the Northern outage Pat and slept through the storm happily.

I imagine that island weather can be pretty intense, even if you're inland. Here, the mountains often block and break up storms, but we get a fair share of "lake effect" weather from Lake Erie, even though it's several hundred miles north. Yesterday and today have been very cold and windy, with rain or snow showers scattered around. Definitely indoor weather. It sounds like you're pretty cozy, Pat.

That sounds like quite a storm and it brought winter with it too! Like you when such weather sets in we battened down the hatches as well. Stay warm!

Bitterly cold this morning and a very strong wind blowing me along the pavement. It was trying to snow but nothing settling. I hope there has been no damage done further north of the country.
I don't know whether I want to watch Sunday's Strictly to find out who is out. They all work so hard it's a pity to lose anyone.

Well Arwen is moving through at her/his pace - snow has stopped and largely gone and the glass has shot up - so surely a better day tomorrow.

Not too bad down here in Somerset but still bitterly cold. I'm recovering from my second hip op so no going out at the moment, just plenty of exercises to do inside! Keep warm !x

Minigranny - keeping upright must be top of your priority list in this weather

Tom - need someone to cosy up to - even gave my Paddington Bear to my Great grand daughter!
