October

Well, we are round to October again - how quickly the year passes by.   Contrary to the forecast at present there is a clear blue sky but a strongish wind blows and it is chilly.   Priscilla and I have walked round the block for a breath of fresh air - very pleasant, but not a suitable day for going any further.

I am looking out of the computer room window into the garden and I can't help wondering where my garden would be in October without Michaelmas Daisies.   I have four or five clumps of different varieties in various places and, with the sun on them, they brighten the place up considerably and contrast nicely with a clump of golden achillea which has been in flower for the whole of September and shows no sign of finishing yet.

The hearing aid clinic in Ripon are very nice people and have just rung to say if I can't get an appointment to de-wax my ears before I go to them on Friday they will do it there.   And also to say they have booked me a return taxi to bring me back after my appointment.   My taxi company can't wait for me as they do the school run.  So that has got everything in place and it strikes me - as it often does - just how very kind and helpful everyone is.

As one gets older it becomes easier to get into a state of panic I find and one has to guard against it! And it is people like this who help.

Yes, it is very easy to get into a state of panic, though not as old as you! Is it the feeling of loss of control that does it? I have had workmen in for the past month, first kitchen fitters, and secondly a plasterer. I am most struck by how differently some tradesmen treat a woman on her own. The plasterer has ben superb - could not have been more helpful, but the fitters were appalling; they would not have tried to get away with the things they did had my husband still been alive -even though he had far less clue about anything building related. Like you, I am very fortunate to have kind friends (still working in the building industry), who weighed in on my behalf to sort things out - but how good it would have been not to need their help in this instance!
It was a gorgeous day here, and my sister in law and I took Dave's ashes to scatter at 5 springs on Brown Clee (you know the spot, Pat), and the lovely sunshine made a sad task much more bearable.
Tomorrow looks like a day for inside jobs. Sweeping up plaster dust, in my case!

Lots of people still want to do a good job by going far in excess of what they're actually paid to do and thinking about what their customers/clients need. And they'll be very happy to do it so long as the accountants don't come along and say they can deal with twice as many people as they are dealing with, and pile on so much work they no longer have the time to do a good job.

That was extremely good of them and takes the stress out of the visit for you. I hope your new hearing aids make a big difference to your hearing. Your garden sounds lovely - a lot of our autumn flowers seemed to flower too early this year and are over already.

Glad to hear that your hearing-aid appointment has been all sorted out. It's been a lot less rainy here than the forecasters promised too, which is just as well as we've had a power cut for most of the day and time would have dragged if I'd not been able to spend the time outdoors.

Of course they're helpful - you're paying for the service! "Going Private" makes a huge difference. I've worked in both sectors and I can tell you you definitely pay for the extra touches.

Your description of your garden sounds lovely! It's good to hear that your appointment for your new hearing aid is all set up for you. How nice that the people are so helpful to you. If you have trouble with the hearing aid batteries (my husband has the same problem) you might ask about the new rechargeable ones so you don't have to deal with batteries at all.

I agree - people very often are kind and helpful. Sometimes we are so caught up with annoying or worrying things going on that we forget to mention the good bits, and unfortunately there are those who are anything but kind and helpful. But it speaks for you that you notice the good in others.
It‘s been a beautiful sunny first October day here, and by the looks of it will be the same tomorrow.

How reassuring to get everything in place for your appointment with the Hearing Aid clinic. These things can be stressful.
Michaelmas Daisies are one of my favourite flowers and brighten up the garden when all the summer blooms have gone over. Achillea sets them off so well.
Quite a bit cooler here today. Very wet grey start but brighter later. I welcomed October in by switching on my electric fire for a short time. It hasn't been used since April.

I love October for the lovely colors and the color temps!
I am glad you get so much joy out of your garden! Every season you have something to celebrate in your blooms!

Your daisies sound lovely. They are fantastic Autumn flowers. Daisies flower until frost in Massachusetts, US. I grow 6 ft. tall daisies among ornamental grasses in an island bed. It sunny and cool making it perfect weather for being outside. The weekend is predicted to be the same. Don't you just love Autumn weather...

I find everyone is very hepful to me. One way that being in a wheelchair makes a difference.

Furry Gnome is right about the wheel chair. I wonder if they just want to leave the office to help, or send you on your way sooner.

6C here yesterday morning, but then a lovely day. I once had my ears 'done'. The lady used a warm water, pulsating syringe. It tickled, but did an amazing job.

I find people are lovely to my elderly mother-in-law and mother when I take them shopping, particularly the pharmacies, but I am sure, with good reason, staff at the telephone company could see my mother coming and needed urgent morning tea breaks out the back, leaving the newest staff member to cope. With the former I am the much appreciated go-to, with my Mum, the tag along. Interesting the difference.- Pam.

If where you're going for the ear check offered then let them to the dewaxing, all done in one stop, and it seems like they have probably asked for you to have it done, after all most deafness is half caused by ears being waxed up with the hearing aid jammed down on the wax day in and day out. Private clinics work well, no doing as the computer says, no lack of common sense, no BMA telling them to oppose everything that might be remotely sensible, no chip on their shoulders, just helpful people out to make a living and make folk more comfortable in the process and recommend them to others. .

I shall do just that Rachel.
I know the spot indeed Charlotte - glad you had a sunny day for doing it - it makes the task more bearable.

A thoroughly wet and cold day down here on Sheppey - no too hot, no to humid - some people will be overjoyed.
