Friday

It has again been chilly here today and often cloudy so there really was no incentive to go for my walk round.   I resisted all morning, doing all the mind games in the Times, entertaining friend W who called with some magazines and stayed for a chat, eating my chicken chow mein left by my carer for my lunch.   But by two in the afternoon guilt was so strong that I put on my anorak and a scarf and made myself walk round.   There will be many days in winter when I shall not be able to walk round (if there is any possibility of it being icy Priscilla and I do not go out).

On the way back I met J, who only lives a few doors away but is almost housebound and only comes out with her 'Priscilla' when she needs to post a letter.   We had a pleasant chat for about ten minutes so I at least managed three nice long chats today and in addition two nice long phone calls.   Tomorrows my God daughter and her husband are driving over to see me.   I am looking forward to seeing them both and am cooking a lunch for the first time in a very long time.  (Mary Berry's Sausage and new Potato Supper (at lunchtime)).  I used to enjoy cooking and entertaining but now it is so long since I did it and mobility is such an issue that I find it stressful although I know it will be alright when I get going.

Back tomorrow with a report how it all went.   See you then.

Lunch and visiting with your God daughter should be good fun. MB provides good recipes so your cooking should be fine. When I am in doubt about my cooking I have lots of wine. Everybody is happy. Enjoy.

It was very cold here today - barely above freezing when I left this morning but taking a cue from you - I still forced myself to get out for a walk! It was wonderful that you were able to meet up with the friend who was also using her walker - good timing for both of you.
Enjoy your company tomorrow.

It sounds like a lovely visit...and I will bet you that your god daughter will be so glad to visit with you that she will scarcely notice the food!

Enjoy your time with your god-daughter tomorrow! It's wonderful to have special visitors!

Why aren't they bringing you fish and chips?

Enjoy your visitors and I am sure the meal will go well. I find my slow cooker is an absolute boon - just bung it all in and then spoon it all out!

Keep up with the walking when you can, even if it means going round and round the table, like the Bronte sisters used to in winter.

It always makes me feel better to have managed a short walk each day, however reluctant I feel beforehand. There is nothing like a few lungfuls of fresh air to give me a boost.
I am sure your lunch party will be a success. Enjoy yourselves.

I am sure you will have a wonderful time with your visitors. Who could resist sausages?!

Have a lovely day, Weave, and don't rush with the clearing up afterwards!

Hope you have a wonderful day today. We don't do Mary Berry in this house, the two Nigel and Nigella recipes always come out.

In this house a recipe book of any type is not required for sausage and new potatoes. As for eating such a meal for supper, no way. (I realise Weave is doing it for lunch, which is much better, before anybody rushes to thump it out and tell me). Supper is cheese and biscuits or a cup of cocoa. Who is this Mary Berry woman suggesting people go to bed on a big meal? Have a good day with your visitors Weave and don't work yourself too hard. Relax.

Rachel - I think a lot of rather posh people call what you and I call tea or perhaps high tea supper. You should look the recipe up on the internet and try it - it really
turned out very well.
Thelma - I have always been a Nigella fan.
Veg artist - God daughter did all the cleaning up.
Rachel - wish there was a decent fish and chip shop round here then they could do that.

Thanks everyone. I had a very bad night last night so am hoping for a better one tonight.

I found your blog quite by accident, and it was a timely find. I am "supposed" to walk daily, but just don't like it. I was brought up short a few months ago by a giving-way feeling in my leg, and the doctor surprised me by saying my legs were weak!

That is a long way of saying I'm glad I happened across your post about making yourself get out there and walk.

Thanks and I hope your visit and lunch went well.

Nothing so heartwarming as good friends. What a pity the birthday cake was forgotten - just the sort of thing that I do! I hope that you have no more sleepless nights, Weaver. I am also not sleeping well, perhaps it is the change from summer to winter weather.

Interesting what people call meals. Here in rural Maine, farm/working class people call the weekday evening meal (your tea/high tea), supper. It's a simple family meal, not posh. Dinner is eaten at noon but also can be Sunday afternoon at grandma's house.

Fancier/younger people tend to call the evening meal dinner, and eat lunch, not dinner, at mid-day.

We don't have such a thing as a late night snack called supper.

If you invite someone over for supper, they'll expect a simple family meal in the kitchen and stay for an hour at most, probably with their shoes off if it's snowy out.

If you invite someone over for dinner, they'll bring wine, dress up a bit, and expect a set dining room table, hors d/ouevres first, a special dessert after, and have to send you a thank you note the next day.
