Pot pourri

Fairly late on this Thursday evening before I get round to putting on a post.   I can't think why because once I returned from my weekly hairdressing I haven't done much really - it has again been too warm and I have decided the sensible thing to do is 'go with it' not to walk round the estate, to drink plenty of water and take it easy.   I can't say I have noticed any difference in how I feel yet - but it is early days.   I did go round all my plants in pots and make sure they were not thirsty and the weather man this evening  suggests we might get some of the South's rain up here over the next few days.   The sky is looking suitably black at the moment - so I live in hope.

Covid has become a bit of a problem up here over the last week or two.   I think the vaccination programme is going very well but there are suddenly thirty cases in the village next to where I live - I don't think anyone is desperately ill with it but it is still worrying.

Following watching the first installment of 'Hemingway' on television last week (it got five star reviews) and realising I had never read any of his books I sent for a couple and am now absolutely hooked on reading A Farewell to Arms, find it almost 'unputdownable'.   If you haven't read it I do urge you to give it a go.

Another thing which has concerned me this week has been the state of Centre Court at Wimbledon.  I have forgotten just how much that roof cost but  know it wasn't put on for peanuts.   So I can't help wondering why so many of the players are slipping about and in the case of Serena Williams I believe she had to withdraw (I'm sure somebody will correct me if I am wrong).  I watched the Andy Murray match and he slipped and appeared to badly twist his knee.   Luckily he seems to have recovered.   (Go for it Andy)

Well sorry to have bitted and bobbed about tonight but it is the state my mind is in at present.   Derek tells me to keep putting controversial posts on as he enjoys them.   I do too, I love to get a good response that makes me want to gather you all in a nice room somewhere and have a good chat over a drink (yes there will be coffee available for anyone who doesn't want anything stronger) but my brain has got to be in gear to think of the right thing.

Oh and before I go I see they have located the woman who flapped the piece of cardboard in front of a rider in Le Tour (I think it said something like 'hello grandma and grandad'- in French of course) causing a huge crash.

See you tomorrow when I hope I shall be in a more calm and collected state of mind.

No rain here, either, Pat (I guess we are West rather than South), but there is plenty forecast for the weekend!

Sounds like you had a pleasant day. Busy enough without overdoing it! And here we are at the weekend again. How the weeks zoom by!

Hardly ever get to post a comment here, Pat, as usually everyone has said what I intended to say. So you must be late posting tonight. My concern at Wimbledon was that no one in the stands was wearing a mask! Has that gone by the wayside in the UK? We are still being encouraged to wear them, indoors and out, even when vaccinated.

I blame the weather for my state of mind! It seems to be humid although quite cool, but getting a little warmer down here. I feel drowsy even after a good night's sleep and it takes me well into the afternoon to wake up. For days the sky has been overcast, no wind, no rain, no sun, no nothing. I think things may change over the weekend.
What a stupid thing for that woman to do during the Tour de France. I hope no-one was badly injured.
Very wise of you not to exert yourself in the heat. I too am trying to remember to drink plenty of water.

Chris sensible people are still wearing them here. We may not go into a shop without one - or the hairdressers for example.
Charlotte fingers crossed for the weekend.

Take it easy, please, when the weather is warm. You are wise to drink lots of water, although a stronger drink would be lovely during a discussion. I saw that the woman who caused the crash might face charges.

Love,
Janie

I've read his 'The old man and the sea', but no others. Like you, I probably should.

The 'Hemingway' series was running here a few weeks ago and I recorded them all. So far I've only seen one but I'm looking forward to the others.

You are wise to skip your walk if it is too hot. The heat can take a toll on us faster than we realize sometimes. Enjoy the 'Hemingway' series!

I rather suspect that what you call hot, some of us would call nice and warm. Anyway, yesterday (Thurs) we were celebrating the fact that we actually had a very warm and sunny day and no rain - what a tonic that was. For the first time in a week I was able to do some gardening - too much in the end and ached like hell in the evening. The slippery grass at Wimbledon was caused by a combination of it's green lushness and the amount of moisture in the air because of all the rain we've had. Having to shut the roof prevented the grass from drying out like it normally would after the first few days.
Mostly watching the cricket at the moment - anything's better than watching Andy Murray, can't stand the guy.

Must find that Hemingway programme, wasn't the blurb that he needed a new wife for every new book the selling point.

John "By Stargoose And Hanglands" said...

I remember reading "A Farewell To Arms" for A-Level English and read many of his other books soon afterwards. I seem to remember that "For Whom The Bell Tolls" was the best of them to my teenage mind. The fact that I read so many of his novels must be some kind of recommendation as studying a book for an exam is usually enough to put one off of that particular author for years. It looks as though your weather might be cooling down soon.

Thelma - as one of the well-known woman writers on the programme said - he had four wives and numerous women but he never left a wife until he had found a replacement.

Derek - I do find it hard watching Murray as he makes it all look such hard work.

Thank youall for responding.

The so-called Delta variety of the Covid virus seems to dominate infection numbers these days. We have not (yet!) had any significant new outbreaks here, but I am a bit pessimistic (or, rather, realistic) about the Fourth Wave which I am quite sure will hit us after the end of the summer holidays. People have been getting careless, even though many regulations (such as wearing masks) are still in place. They travel, they meet others, they hug, they are so desperate to resume their activities from 1 1/2 years ago that it is only a question of time until new infections peak again.
Hopefully, whatever caused the 30 cases in your area will soon be identified and stopped before it can spread any further.

Hopefully, come July 19th here, pretty much all restrictions will cease and we'll all be on the same level playing field, which at the moment we most certainly aren't. Sports fans for instance can gather in their thousands, few with face masks, while large numbers of ordinary, restriction abiding people, still have to abide by gatherings of few in number, weddings being one of them.
Clearly the lifting of all lock down measures won't suit many who would be happy to live under lock down for many more months yet, but at least they'll be free to carry on as they are while the rest of us get on with rebuilding our normal lives.

Actually, Martha Gellhorn (3rd wife) did leave Hemingway. The only one to do so. She was a fascinating woman in her own right. She was an intrepid journalist. A war correspondent who had covered the Spanish Civil War--she even got onto one of the ships on D-Day. Even though women reporters were banned--she managed to hide in ship's bathroom after interviewing some nurses on board and ended up as the only woman reporter on the beaches of Normandy that day. A number of good books written about her. Currently reading her memoir--Travels with Myself and Another.

I'm here to testify about the great work Dr Ede did for me. I have been suffering from (HERPES) disease for the past 3 years and had constant pain, especially in my knees. During the first year, I had faith in God that I would be healed someday. This disease started circulating all over my body and I have been taking treatment from my doctor, few weeks ago I came across a testimony of one lady on the internet testifying about a Man called Dr Ede on how he cured her from Herpes Simplex Virus. And she also gave the email address of this man and advised anybody to contact him for help for any kind of sickness that he would be of help, so I emailed him telling him about my (HERPES Virus) he told me not to worry that I am going to be cured!! Well I never believed it,, well after all the procedures and remedy given to me by this man few weeks later I started experiencing changes all over me as Dr Ede assured me that I will be cured, after some time I went to my doctor to confirmed if I have be finally healed behold it was TRUE, So friends my advise is if you have such sickness or any other at all you can contact Dr Ede via email(dredespellcasters@gmail.com) Or WhatsApp him (+2347064290546)
