Will it ever end?

Will the rain ever stop?   Today it has poured with rain ever since I returned from the hairdressers at ten this morning.   My gardener just managed to get my lawn mowed again before it started.   I must say I am pleased he did.   He had bought from somewhere a bag of some kind of compost which had been growing mushrooms and now my lawn is sprouting them in profusion.

The rest of the day has been a wash out in more ways than one; the sky is uniformly grey, the wind is quite strong and water is pouring down the sitting room window - all at the end of May and nothing diffferent forecast for the next week.  So we shall be into June before there is any warm weather - just like last year.

The days fly by - today an old friend rang to see how I was and my son kept ringing as he wished to speak to me.  Eventually he got through.   Now I am reading and writing blogs - then it will be Escape to the Country and then tea time again.  The days just fly by.

The Indian variant of Covid seems to be gradually wending its way Northwards even as the country opens up again.   I do sincerely hope, for the sake of everyone, that it is coming to an end but things are by no means sure yet,

Nothing else to report today.   It hasn't been a day for doing anything much - too wet to potter outside.    I intend to ask my carer if I might clean out the airing cupboard this weekend.   That is a job I can do sitting down and it will give me a sense of purpose but next Wednesday is the day my cleaner gives me cleaning time and she intends to thoroughly 'bottom' the bathroom this time and I know she intends to begin with the airing cupboard.Yes folks,  I do know it is my airing cupboard but I do also know that she may well make a much better job of it than I will.   Have a nice evening.

Isn't the perception of weather funny! I live it Florida and we haven't had rain in months. It is supposed to be the beginning of our rainy season but ..... Then they are predicting an above active hurricane season - which can bring too much water. I had to go into town this morning and there were two large old oaks down on two different roads - not supposed to happen during dry times!
I had books in at the library which was nice but I still haven't been able to get gas due to people freaking out - the stoppage wasn't anything affecting us ... until people panicked. Fortunately I can wait it out as I'm still not going anywhere.
I love your blog and really appreciate that you take the time to write it.

It has persisted down here all day too.
I think all my cupboards could do with a good bottoming out at the moment!

Lots of places here in the United States are getting torrential rains too, especially Texas. I am in Indiana and we've had our share but not floods. Today dawned sunny & beautiful but now it's looking overcast so I'm wondering if we have rain ahead. I know the earth needs the moisture but too many gloomy days & I find myself getting depressed... although I shouldn't. Mother Earth knows what she's doing. :-) ~Andrea xoxo

I babysat 2 of my grandchildren this morning and came home exhausted! How I ever raised 5 kids, I have no idea. I cannot imagine doing much else today so I will read and relax for awhile. (Yawn!!)

It would seem our weather is almost the direct opposite of yours. We finally got a bit of rain yesterday and are supposed to see more but the rain has gone around us more times than not so I do hope the weather people are right this time. It gets so dry and dusty looking and when you get just a small amount of rain the green of the grass and trees starts to really pop out. I prefer it to be lush and green than dry and dirty. I hope you get some nice sunshine soon. Ranee (MN) USA

I think we are all fed up with this weather. What a shame that we can't be generous and share our plethora of wet days with those parts of the world in desperate need of some.
It has taken me all day to get warm, in spite of a walk and sensible clothing. I am looking forward to complaining about the heat, if it ever arrives.

What exactly is an airing cupboard? Is it like a linen closet or for towels etc.? it seems I've read about something (can't remember what it's called) in books set in England and it's a cabinet built over some kind of heat source that keeps sheets and pillow cases, quilts etc. dry and ready to use.

My computer room and my bedroom are one and the same since I broke my hip so it is always a temptation to switch on and read your comments on my way to bed - thank you for them so far. Still raining here.

We get Escape to the Country here as well, and I have enjoyed it in the past but I am really hooked on "Escape to the Chateau"! Do you watch that, Pat?

Come this weekend rain is forecast for one solid week. It almost makes me want to look up the maps and see what the hell is going one.

I too am wondering what an airing cupboard is?

Our weather here has been much like yours. We've had rain every day for over a week. Our grass is getting tall but there's been no chance to cut it. I hope you enjoy cleaning out the airing cupboard!

Rain, rain and more rain here, too. My grass needs cutting, and the weeds are blossoming in my paths and borders, but hey-ho! The nice weather will return, one day. To answer the queries, an airing cupboard is a cupboard which has an immersion heater in it, which heats water for washing/bathing. It usually has shelves where you can store bedding etc, and as it gets warm, keeps everything dry and "aired". xx

It seems like the weather is going backwards - we have been having rain and/or quick heavy showers in May and now we are back to March - cold, wet and SO windy. Where's the sunshine gone?

I managed to get the side lawn cut a couple of days back - had to abandon the rest as a tiny rush which grows out there - just a few inches high - had flowered and the pollen irritated my lungs and I couldn't stop coughing. Ah well, at least it will have "gone over" by the time it's dry enough to carry on out there.

I hope you can have a tidy up in the airing cupboard - it will make you feel a sense of achievement and you will wonder why you have 27 surplus pillowcases which don't match any of your current bedding . . . Leastways I did last time I tackled mine!

Our unsettled weather has continued all of this week, with showers and sunshine in rapid succession. Tomorrow, Saturday, is forecast to be an entirely sunny day - we'll see whether it turns out to be true; would be nice to go for a long walk without having to pull the hood up on my rain coat for a change!
I am sure you will come to a satisfactory agreement with your cleaner, Pat. You are admirable in wanting to do things yourself.

I'm also fed up with the weather and the lack of warmth - so many weeds appearing in my new garden and I'm not keen at working outside when it's cold and damp.

Have fun with your airing cupboard! That is something I'm missing here as the boiler is a Oil Combi Boiler and out in the garage - so no hot water tank.

Rachel Phillips said...

To all you weather complainers, as I said on my blog the other day, we are in for a cold summer so no point in looking forward to a hot one. That will please most of you and there will be no complaining about the heat. As for airing cupboards, they aint what they used to be with all this tank lagging.

Feeling smug as I mowed the lawns (mine and Mom's) the evening before, finishing at 9.30 in the almost dark...but dry!

Tasker Dunham said...

It's very satisfying to mow the lawn and beat the rain before it starts. I had that feeling on Wednesday. Just got the mower and cables away before it began. Mown and watered in one go. It looks good.

Derek Faulkner said...

While I can't be as positive as Rachel about a cold summer ahead, I do agree with her regarding the heat complainers. We've seen it many times on here in the past, whereby a few hot and sunny days (which we call a summer), sees people immediately complaining about the heat.

I consulted a pine cone Derek, so I know.

Ah, a good old-fashioned and well tried method.

I'm a bit confused - you said you were unable to get in or out of a car yet you've been to the hairdressers - presumably in a taxi?

A comment above says "weather just seems to be a part of our lives here" and this is true everywhere but the UK. This country has a weird obsession with the weather as if people are absolutely compelled to mention it, usually be complaining about it. The weather is no different than it was the day we were born, we get rain, sun, cloud, hail, snow an wind but whatever it is people just MUST speak about it. It's as if there's nothing else of any worth going on in their lives other than observations about the weather, it's really very strange. Whether it's to someone you know or to complete strangers the weather MUST be mentioned! You don't get that in other countries.

It's been raining in Kansas USA too and rain in the forecast for at least the next 7 days. Some minor flooding occurring already so hoping the forecast rain doesn't come in downpours. Sure would be nice to see the sun in between times.

I don't remember the weather ever being an issue when I was a child but without doubt I remember a lot more sunny days than wet ones. Does that mean that the weather is wetter now? In any case, I think we are as humans programmed to enjoy sunshine so rain makes us miserable!

The Weaver of Grass said...

Yes I agree with thoes of you who say the British seem to be osbsessed with the weather. I am obsessed with it to some extent - my walking is slow and if I get to the furthest extent of my walk and it begins to rain I have a long way to come back and I can't move quickly so it is imperative I set off with a fairly good promise of fine weather for a spell.

Thanks to you all. I love reading your comments and agree with them all. I have always used the pine cone method as one way Rachel - and I read my trusty barometer each morning, turning the pointer so that I can keep an eye on how much the glass has gone up or down.
