This and that

I think we have all got one eye on the weather having seen the Forecast for the next week or so.   There is no doubt that each day dawns a little chillier than the previous one.   Today fits the pattern - sunny but woolly hat and gloves judging by the dog walkers going past.

As I get nearer to the magic age of 90 (1 year and 7 months to go) I do notice that my anxiety levels seem to have risen.   This morning I rang my son to tell him that a series of 'The Young Montalbano' was starting on BBC this evening - not a new series but one which I haven't seen and I was not sure whether he had or not.   Unusually there was no reply - in fact the phone switched to mute.   I concocted various scenarios in my head - his wife was ill, he was ill, his wife's mother was ill.   Of course, after an hour, I found out the reason - he was doing his Tesco order and his wife could not get to the phone he had switched it to mute.   One hour's anxiety for nothing.   All the talking about this to myself makes no difference I'm afraid.

Tomorrow morning is no carer day - she has one Sunday in the month when she doesn't come in.   I am happy to manage on my own but it takes a long time.   The jobs which take her an hour take me all morning.   But she is really good to only miss one Sunday each month - she could easily miss every Sunday.   She leave absolutely everything ready - cereals in a bowl with a cover over, cup by the kettle, clean underwear  next to my clothes.  Everything she can do to help she does.

Tomorrow is Boat Race Day here in the UK and because of Covid the Race is not being run on the Thames but on the Ouse at Ely.   I presume this is to discourage crowds turning up.   Thinking about it and seeing a photograph of the river with a glorious Ely Cathedral in the background  reminded me of 1956 when my then husband (who died in 1991) and I discussed going to the Boat Race.   In the end he went alone and I went on the train to visit my sister and her family where they lived in Lowestoft.  I remember him talking about the huge crowds.

Evening now and nothing has happened since I wrote earlier.  It has actually been a lovely afternoon and as time has gone on so people have gone past with less clothes on - some even in T shirts.   So things must have warmed up a bit.  Until tomorrow friends...

Apparently anyone turning up at Ely to watch the race can be fined £200. As there's a public path all along the riverside I'm not sure how that's going to work. Come on Cambridge!

My mother, who'll be 88 this week, is finding the same. I think it has more to do with isolation than with age? I say that because my 28 yr. old son (working from home now for 12-1/2 months) is struggling with it, too.

However you spend your Sunday tomorrow, and though I know you're not religious, I hope you have a very Happy Easter, Pat! Treat yourself to a little something special.

Very cold when I took Rick out first thing but the sun did come out this afternoon. I think snow is a possibility on Monday though! Stay warm Pat.

I have always worried when I can't get in touch with my children. Maybe I have always suffered with anxiety and not known it, and as you said it is usually unfounded.
For some reason we always supported Oxford in the Boat Race, though I don't know why.
Dare we hope that chillier conditions will keep people from congregating in large numbers? I try not to think of the possibility of having another lockdown.

Thanks for the reminder about the boat race. I hope I can get it on TV here as it is always exciting. Stay safe and warm, dear Pat.

I can't decide if I am anxious due to age, the unique circumstances of this last year, or some combination of the two, but yes, lots of waking in the night with my hands clenched and my mind racing. Its tiresome.

We are also having very cold weather, although supposedly its mainly in comparison to an unseasonably warm March rather than unusual cold now. I don't believe it!

It's only one day, Weave. You know, it's ok to do absolutely NOTHING. Sunday is supposed to be a day of rest anyway.

It is still quite cool here too. Beautiful blue sky and sunshine with robins and even a few wild turkeys scouting around. Boat Race Day sounds like fun. We have The Head of the Charles and it seems very similar. When a friend was coxswain for Yale, I enjoyed the race. Have you tried meditation? Meditation tapes are excellent for calming and centering the mind and body. Quite healing too.

I find that when I am feeling most vulnerable, is when I am most anxious. This has been a very trying season for you, and it would be difficult NOT to feel anxious.

My friend has a job like your career, only it's called attendant. Her charge is a very depressed, tiny old person who tells my friend she doesn't need an attendant. I mentioned the term career to my friend, and it has made all the difference in the world to her charge, who is pleased to have someone caring for her.

Gosh, the boat race - years since I've seen or thought about that - and yet a quintessential piece of British culture. I think it's the ending of Grandstand on a Saturday afternoon ( that ages me!) that is why I never see events like this anymore.

Your carer really is a wonderful person, bearing the term carer like a title of honour and not like a heavy burden!
As for worrying when we don‘t reach someone - well, ever since I returned from work to find my until then apparently perfectly healthy husband dead on the floor in our living room, only 5 days after his 41st birthday, I worry easier than before in such circumstances.

I did watch the Montalbano thanks to your alert, Weave. It was one I had not seen too. I still prefer the old Montalbano though. The young one is too handsome.

Your carer is an absolute treasure. Just below 0C early this morning (Sunday) with a frost but turned into a pleasant Sunny day. Hope you experienced something similar.

They will want more than tee shirts tomorrow! Sounds as though it will be a good day to stay in and read a book.

Dear Ms. Weaver of Grass,

Thanks to you I was able to make it online for the final exciting moments of the women's race and the entirety of the men's.

I had recently read: The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics but this was my 1st time at seeing a race.

Many Thanks from Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA

Tom at least he is not bow-legged. Did you know that the whole concept of the Montalbano episodes is based on the Comedia del arte form? My son told me this yesterday and I must say it does make sense. I loved it too.
MFH Glad you managed to see the real thing
Yes John -- weather much the same here.
Thank you all for your comments.

Sometimes it's good to put the phone on mute and have a bit of a break from relatives constantly calling. When my mother in law was alive she called so often it was like a full time job answering the phone. Now I'm old myself I don't ring my offspring unless necessary, they have their own lives to lead, something I wish I had more of when I was younger and tied to the phone!

I might think I'll ring then I think is it really necessary - our children have their own partners and their time should be focussed on them. They do ring me often and I prefer that as I know they then have the time to chat. Mother in law interrupted lots of personal times with my husband, times that can't be regained now my husband is no longer here.

I am sharing this testimony to partners suffering in their relationships because there is an enduring solution.
My husband left me and our 2 kids for another woman for 3 years. I tried to be strong just for my kids but I could not control the pains that torment my heart. I was hurt and confused. I needed help, so I did some research on the internet and came across a site where I saw that Dr. Okolo, a spell caster, can help get lovers back. I contacted him and he did a special prayer and spells for me. To my surprises, after some days, my husband came back home. That was how we reunited again and there was a lot of love, joy and peace in the family.
