Sunday

Sunday - nothing day really - I have totally lost count of the days this year.

One second ago there was a heavy snow blizzard here - now it is bright sunlight again.   Whichever, if I open the front door it is bitterly cold.  Storm Bella raged through our country overnight - luckily it does seem we escaped the worst of it up here on the River Ure - but looking at the News it seems that those around The Great Ouse really caught the worst of the storm with trees down and extensive flooding.   Greta, I know you often read my blog- if you are reading this I do hope the water didn't actually get inside and that you are safe and well.   Thank you for your Christmas calendar - I do hear about you from time to time and I did think about you many times yesterday, hoping things were getting better rather than worse.

How our weather has changed over my lifetime.   Is it my imagination or did it always snow in Winter, and were the Summers usually fine and sunny?   Or do we look at the past through rose-tinted specs?

I have, of course, spent the Christmas period alone - phone calls, plenty of new books to read, not a lot to watch on TV (is there ever unless one likes ancient films?), but actual face-to-face contact - nil.   The weather has been chilly so apart from religiously doing my exercises I have had little or no activity.   I watched HM The Queen as I always do - it is a ritual I have always watched and enjoyed - it is but a small part of the day.   Soon it will all be over and we shall be into a New Year - and it can only be better.   I await my Vaccination - as do most of my over - 80 friends.

In the meantime dea Blog Friends - Happy New Year.

Glad to hear that you coped so well with this strange Christmas and that you are such a good patient - doing your exercises every day. I hope it won't be too long until you can get your vaccine so that you can resume some face to face activities with family and friends.
Take care and here's hoping for a very Happy New Year!

I am looking forward to reading one of your posts in which you tell us about going out for lunch with your friends and that you had the salmon! Hopefully it won't be too much longer to wait. -Jenn

Even after the vaccination we will still need to wear masks and socially distance, the vaccine hasn't been shown to stop transmission, only to stop ourselves from becoming ill and needing hospital care. We can apparently still be a "spreader" even if we don't become ill.

What it should do is give us the confidence to get out more knowing that we wouldn't be risking our lives to the same extent. Will we be able to hug our loved ones again? I don't know.

No, it didn't always snow at Christmas, if it had we wouldn't have the need for making a big event of having a "White Christmas" and I remember years when I was young when it didn't snow and the sledges weren't brought out. I think what we do recall is the long school summer holidays and playing out, those joyful memories override the more dismal days. I remember being on our annual holiday at Blackpool when I was about ten and it rained every single day, forever to be known as the washout holiday.

When I recently asked my Granddaughter aged twelve what she remembers about the Summer this year all her memories were related to being outdoors in good weather.

We obviously had copious rain in the days gone by otherwise we wouldn't have had the abundance of greenery and produce that this little island is famous for.
Our "green and pleasant land" which has been no less green and pleasant this year than in years gone by.

More appreciation instead of complaining is needed!

I had two decorations up: my little 18" fiber optic tree and my 4' artificial Christmas tree with about a dozen ornaments on it. Both of those were taken down & packed away by noon the day after Christmas. I want to forget about this Christmas as quickly as I can. I wrote about it yesterday on my blog. So I can sympathize with you totally. ~Andrea xoxo

Good to know you are doing your exercises, so when the weather gets warmer again, I am sure you will be able to go out again.
Quiet days here, too, just OK and myself right now, although we did have a very nice meal with his sister and her husband yesterday, well within what the restrictions allowed for.
Just come in from a brisk walk around the village, it was rather windy but dry, and gave us a good appetite for coffee and cake.

I thought of you on Christmas day, and hoped that all was well for you.

Now Christmas is done, and we are moving into the New Year. I feel optimistic, and my biggest hope is to see my two year old grand daughter in the first half of the year. Thank goodness for skype and for the technology that keeps us together when we can't be together.

Storm Bella certainly left it's mark down here in Kent overnight. Boy was it noisy as severe gusts of wind howled round the bungalow all night long, coupled with several hours of heavy rain that has left many roads with lakes of water running across them and people driveways all pouring water out into the streets, and it's cold.
Glad that you appear to have got through the solitary Christmas OK - a New Year and a new vaccination coming up soon and the prospect of warming days of Spring.

Best wishes for a happy, healthy New Year.

Wishing you well, Pat, and am glad you're still exercising as you should. Your joints will thank you!

Like you, I love to read as the escape into a book is almost as good as visiting with friends.

Happy New Year and may 2021 be healthier and kinder to us all.

Hugs!

Yesterday was wet and dismal but I woke to sunshine which lasted for most of the day but this evening it is raining again. I hope the pavements are not icy tomorrow as I need my little daily walk. My first Christmas alone has passed quite pleasantly. Phone calls and one visitor inside plus two pairs through the window! Not literally, I hasten to add.
I hope 2021 lives up to all it's expectations!

Happy Christmas, a bit late, and Happy New Year, dear Pat. I had three of my sons here for the holiday, an unexpected and wonderful thing. Grandchildren too, at least some of them. So the house was full of noise and snow and wet boots as we had a nice snowfall Christmas Eve, right after our youngest son flew in from Florida via Chicago--you can never fly direct to West Virginia, it seems, but must always go somewhere else first.

I have been meaning to tell you how much I enjoyed Christmas at War--was it you that recommended it? Full of little stories of people's memories of Christmases during WWII in Britain. it explained some of my mother's traditions that I hadn't thought about--the paper chains and honeycomb bells, for example. Very interesting read.

Yes, looking forward to this next year without Trump, and with the vaccine. My aunt, who is in her 80's, has already had it. I can't wait til it's our turn.

You are experiencing winter weather, in winter.... It's supposed to be summer here in New Zealand but it's currently 53°, the central heating is on and I'm in two layers of woollens! I feel for those camping. And because the borders are closed, more families than usual are holidaying at home and exploring the country.

I'm glad you are so religious about your exercises, I hope you are noticing an improvement in your fitness already? I found that when I missed for one day I was ok, but any more than that and I found it very hard to get through the next couple of days.

Happy New Year - may the vaccine come quickly for you.

Happy New Year, Pat. With the vaccines being distributed, things are surely going to be better for 2021. As gardeners, we are all looking forward to our spring bulbs in flower. Your display should be amazing with all the extra planting you have had done.

I am a senior too and will apparently be high on the list to receive the vaccines, right after health care workers. That is here in California. So let's hope the vaccines will arrive soon for all who want them. Voluntary of course. Happy New Year to you and continued recovery.
