Saturday

Saturday again - five weeks now since my broken hip operation.   I am beginning to walk better with my frame.   Sadly my cellulitis is returning although I am trying to give my legs as much exercise as possible to keep the circulation going - it looks as though they will have to be bandaged again so a shower in the morning before a decision is made.

Saturday is never my favourite day but now that I am immobile, coupled with lockdown does not make for a jolly day.   Luckily I have an easy book to read (my head is not yet up to the more difficult stuff) and I am still in trauma-recovery according to the nurse so I am happy to have a couple of sleeps during the day (and still sleep at night)!

Obviously we did need to be kept up to date on the state of Covid but I do sometimes wonder what has happened to all the other crises in the world, which were headline news until a year ago.   Are there suddenly no more civil wars, no more famines, nothing which merits any interest?

I am sorry my posts are so boring and so short but I am by no means back to normal (whatever that is) and I quickly tire.   If I haven't answered your post for a while I do apologise but I can only manage a few each evening.   I'll get there before long.   A nice sunny day might help - it has been a horrid wet, dark day here today.

Low light levels in winter are the pits - this is such a dark house and we have to have lights on all day in the rooms we are in.

Enjoy your book, and your naps, and I hope that the Cellulitis improves soon. My eldest daughter has this as a reaction to insect bites in the summer, so has to be careful not to go to anywhere that insects love to be.

I try to avoid the news - just too gloomy. Excapism for me right now.

Dear Weaver,

I think the most important thing right now is for you to just concentrate on your recovery. I love to read your blog...I don’t find any of your entries boring. I am sending warm thoughts your way...Linda

It's just good to know how you are. Don't worry about the longer posts until you are ready to write them.

Best wishes

I’m glad you’re recovering Pat, it takes time, and it’s early days yet, your body has had a shock, and then surgery on top, so slowly slowly you’ll recover , ( sorry I’m an ex nurse) . Plenty of protein to promote healing, and just keep twirling your ankles and doing your recommended exercises. Yes it’s a bit miserable weather wise , so cosy up and perhaps watch some of those silly Christmas films ? There at least 2 UK channels that offer them. No real plot, but they gently wash over you, and all have a happy ending. Rest when you need to , no guilt for napping , you must need it , so go with it for now.I wish you well and I’m sure you’ll get your energy back in the next few weeks xxx

Just saying hi, Pat! I wanted you to know you aren't "alone", even though we are an ocean apart! Likely at this point, most of your Saturday is past (did I get the time different right?), but I hope your Saturday ended up being comfortable and content. -Jenn

The updates are good to hear. Focus on yourself, check in for encouraging comments, repeat as necessary.

Enjoy those daytime naps - they will help you to recover. Stay warm and rest. I agree, it's been a very drab, damp Saturday in Lincolnshire.

For what it's worth I think you're doing brilliantly, Pat. Try not to be so hard on yourself. X

You are not alone nor are you dull. We want to hear how you're doing rather than dial into a blank space & wonder how you are!!!! You are one of my morning regulars - especially since I haven't been all that well myself. So, chin up, enjoy the naps - I do!!

No worries about short posts. It is always good to hear from you. I agree with Sue E. (above) when she recommends protein. A good high protein drink to supplement meals would be ideal. Amazon has some good protein powders, such as: Pure Paleo by Designs For Health. Nutrition is sometimes overlooked when thinking about recovering from a surgery and healing. My holistic MD treats the whole person and nutrition is always part of the equation. I have no doubt, in time, you will be fine. Winter is no fun for anyone, we all look forward to Spring.

Have you ever thought of trying a cellulitis massage machine? There are various types on Amazon but it's basically a large vibrator that can be used in the areas getting cellulitis, to keep the blood flow moving. Be sure to keep these areas warm too, perhaps using heating pads as you are able. Cold inhibits blood flow... I have a terrible time in winter pricking my finger for my glucose monitor test. I have to run my fingers under really warm water first, to get the blood moving so I will bleed properly when stuck.

They even have massage mats too, which might be easier... just sit or lay down, with perhaps a pad under each area that is prone to the cellulitis and let the mat vibrate those areas for circulation.

I really hope you can get this under control. I think if you try the measures I've suggested, it will help you. ~Andrea xoxo (retired RN)

PS~ Please be careful with protein drinks and such. Aging kidneys aren't real fond of lots of protein... or carbohydrates either, for that matter. xoxo

After something so major as a broken hip it does take awhile to get back to square one. Sounds like you are doing all the right things and your situation will improve over time. It's good to have you back again.

So good to hear you are recovering. Tell nurse you would like some of the “really good drugs” along with an exaggerated wink of the eye and see if she’s been holding back on you.

Your posts are a joy even if only a couple of words! It is a blessing to hear from you again and to know that you are on the road to recovery. I'm sorry to hear about the cellulitis returning. It sounds like they are getting on it right away so it can be stopped from getting worse. I'm sure it is frustrating dealing with all this but I know you are a tough lady and you will be bouncing back before you know it! I'm keeping you in my thoughts and sending you all my best!

Never a dull post or there wouldn’t be so many of us here! Cheering your recovery on and sending you all the good vibes I can.

Happy to hear from you, whatever you say and however long your posts are! Hope another round of antibiotics will take care of your cellulitis. Sounds like you are doing everything right! It just takes a long time for your body to regain the strength you lost and it is also working hard to get your stronger. Naps are a good thing!😊

I look forward to reading your posts and I can assure you they are never boring. Your attitude of positivity shines through in each one even when things are not going particularly well.
It takes time to recover and I know you will. You just have to get through the next few months and before long the warm weather will return again along with your mobility. Imagine how lovely it will be to sit outside and enjoy the warm sun in your pretty back garden!
Take care and rest when you can because your body is still healing.
Sending hugs from Canada

I am so pleased that you are recovering at home from your broken hip. I feel an affinity with you because you are just a few months older than I, but how different our circumstances are. Here in Queensland we have been spared the awful effects of the corona virus, with reasonable distancing limits and inability to travel interstate until December 1, although that has not been a problem for me. Usually by this time I would have been on my annual visit to England, where I have a dear sister-in-law, and where I lived for nearly two years before my marriage, many years ago. My eldest daughter lives in New Zealand and we are unable to visit just yet.

Your blog is always interesting. Thank you. I hope your recovery is swift and complete and I send my very best wishes.

It is always good to hear from you, but don't put yourself under more stress by trying to make regular posts. Just keep taking good care of yourself and take each day at a time. My husband had cellulitis and it is very obstinate, so don't lose heart. With a bit of luck we might get another sunny day soon.x

Take care to carry on eating well - it will help with the healing. Keep warm and read lots of books. Time will soon pass and you'll be able to do more.

Don’t you worry about us, we are just glad you are back and so pleased you keep us informed, Take as much time and rest as you need to recover, it is hibernation time after all.

Don’t worry about your posts. Just a “Good morning “ so we know you are okay will do .

Gloomy days never help with any sort of recovery and it's certainly been very dull and drab over the last week.
We are all just glad to see you home safe and sound. Keep moving and resting in between.
Much Love

If you aren't up to reading, I wonder if your local library has accessible audiobooks that you might download into your computer or reading device. So much easier to simply listen to a book sometimes (especially if you get a really good narrator).

Pat i just love to see all your comments. i hope we are keeping you company a little.. I hope you notice yourself feeling better soon dear Pat. Its difficult when you don't notice a change even though healing is happening.. I have nursed hubby through many recoveries.. Its a delicate balance between rest/recovery and getting up and moving... as you need both.. i know you will find your way.. Hopefully one of your carers or your son can put out a bright spot of Christmas for you.. Hugs! deb

I love your blog and you can see from the comments how many people agree with me! You will be back to your old self and you are already making good steady progress. Take time for yourself whenever you need to.

Do not worry about only writing short posts, we are just happy to know that you are home and slowly improving. It's lovely to see your name popping up all around blogland as you comment on some of the blogs you read. We are a small circle and all seem to follow each other visiting friends blogs, seeing your name there is a reassurance.

As for your legs, do you have a recliner chair or can you get one? My Mum's legs are very bad and having them up on the recliner for short periods really helps to take the pressure off the skin of her legs when her cellulitis is at it's worst. Being able to control it at the touch of a button is a real game changer and it's been worth every penny.

EM Griffith said...

Others have said it so well. It's just good to see a blog post from you, no matter how brief. It lets all know you're doing okay. Improving a bit each day, it sounds. The idea of a recliner chair is excellent. Both my mom and mother-in-law would be lost without theirs as mobility is an issue they share, and it helps so much with circulation in their legs. Take good care... as I know you are!

Unknown said...

I agree with A SMaller Life as my husband got cellulitis at the beginning of October and we bought him an electric recliner chair and that does help his legs. He sits with them up most of the day and it does seem to help. Hope yours gets sorted out soon.

One of the things to have taken a back seat is the Brexit negotiations. I am told that they are now blundering around with the fishing quotas. I have not enjoyed 2020 but hopefully there will be sunshine again in 2021!
