Gardening and other pastimes!

Alright - I will admit it - sadly 'gardening' as such is no longer a pastime as I wobble about the garden with Percy, trying to keep my balance.   But I make a good Supervisor when either D1 or D2 do a major job.   And this part of my garden has been a thorn in my flesh ever since I came to live here and now, at last I am getting something done about it.   Of course this morning the weather has stepped in to 'stop play' but a start has been made.   D2 came again yesterday morning (D1 was busy elsewhere) and they are gradually making progress.   The whole area was covered with a thick layer of crazy paving.   I am having it taken up, weed suppressant cover put down and then a thick layer of pebbles laid with stepping stone paving slabs across to the path into the rest of the garden.  An odd number (perhaps 5 or 7) evergreen shrubs - of fairly upright habit - will be planted to break up the monotony of the pebbles and each will have its own special watering channel at the side of it.   I can't put pots on the pebbles because I don't any longer find it easy to get up to this level.   But I took a picture of D2 working yesterday morning - and managed after a bit of fidding about to get it on here using the new Blogger.   I will take more pictures as work progresses.   It is raining heavily now so there will be not work today.

Hi Weaver
I was watching a gardening program and thought of you (and me) The lady had been born with almost non existing arms but functioning hands. As a keen gardener she had reshaped her steep garden into terraces, with paths along each terrace. I watched admiringly while she bent right down and picked up pots and moved them with her hands. Also standing on one leg and weeding with the other foot. she had a beautiful garden.
Does your garden get enough sun to grow something like aubretia, along the tops of the walls? it could soften the hard kines of the walls I think.

Excellent gardening ideas you have Weave.

That sounds like an excellent plan, and putting the shrubs directly into the ground will mean that they establish quickly and search down for water in dryer conditions. The watering channel will help in the first year while they get rooted in properly, it should look lovely.

It is frustrating when you can't get stuck in yourself isn't it, but I bet you made them lots of drinks and one of the first rules of gardening is to keep the workmen well watered.

I can see that your plans will make a big improvement to that space and can imagine how frustrating it is to have 'rain stop play' once more. I daresay the rest of the garden will enjoy it. I used to do most of my gardening kneeling down but my knees objected to that, and if I bend over too far I am likely to topple! I miss having a garden to enjoy but can always enjoy looking at someone else's.

Could you get R2D2 to put some steps into that terrace wall?

Such a shame your garden is terraced Pat ... So you can't get into it.. What you need i think is some raised beds at ground level to allow you to still garden...Would there be room for something like that? Just let the upper levels go wild or planted with something easy to maintain so you wouldn't have the expense of a gardener.. Perhaps a vine that would take over everything.. but maybe blooms.. Hugs! deb

You are indeed an excellent gardener! You make good plans and then make the arrangements to see them followed through to completion. How nice to see the picture! It will be fun to follow the process of these changes.

Walking in beauty - I can't grw aubretia on top pf the wall really because the tops are all slabs so there would be nowhere for the aubretia to take root and grow that way - it would grow back into the garden itself and take up too much room.

I will reserve my judgement on what the patio is like until it is done - it is just that i found it so depressing as it was and it was badly cracked and uneven.

You don't have to use the new blogger, just opt for the old one; it will still work. I've decided to use the old one, simply because I know how it works.
