Ingenious

The ingenuity of wild things never ceases to amaze me - how clever they are.   I came across this photograph just now while trying to clear some old stuff from my laptop.   It was taken by the farmer when he was out with his walking group.   They stopped by an old barn to eat their sandwiches and he just happened to spot this hanging from a beam.   It is a long tailed tit's nest in an old pair of trousers.
Here is another 'nature' photograph I came across - this one taken from my computer room window early one misty moisty evening in November.

I couldn't think what to write about today (I am a bit tired after having visitors yesterday - a visit which I really enjoyed) so these are just to keep you going until I have more energy tomorrow.   It has just decided to rain here - not very enthusiastically - and we really do need it.

I love the tree photograph. Those birds are very opportunistic! -Jenn

Rain - ah that magic word, we're experiencing yet another hot and sunny day, with endless similar days to come.
On the reserve this morning, on a closed five bar gate, I came across 30-40 juvenile Swallows strung along it with many more on the ground alongside. They were all twittering away while preening themselves, possibly discussing the southwards journey ahead and the best route to take, considering they've never done it before.

Birds never cease to amaze, especially when it comes to nest building.

Hope your energy returns tomorrow. Here it was 107F by late afternoon yesterday - and humid - stepping out on to the front porch it felt like a sauna! Today will be similar.

Needless to say, I have little energy for outdoor chores or activities - instead am working indoors today where thankfully the a/c is working full throttle. I washed and dried bed linens, and ironed all my linen clothes - the only fabric which seems to work in this heat, phew!

I can only see one thing in that second picture since Tom said it last time you featured it. I won't repeat it, he may like to.

Birds are amazing in the places they find to build a nest. I love the tree in the second picture. Have a good evening!

Two very contrasting photos but equally fascinating. It must have been quite a thrill to come across that bird nest so perfectly made, and the tree on a misty day is beautiful. Thank you for sharing them with us and I hope you have a bit more energy tomorrow.

Trees, of course, do weave their inbred magic. Yet that first photo, the trousers appropriated and given new purpose, is genius. Of course we can all snap away. But having the eye to know what to photograph and then, selectively, give to posterity is a talent.

My very first recollection of a bird's nest was in our shed (at the bottom of the garden) where a Robin had made her nest in the pocket of an old coat. I must have been about 3, and was totally fascinated.

The photo of the misty tree is beautiful. Birds frantically build their nests when the urges of spring come along, I think the collared doves are the worst builders.

Both pictures are great in their own way. The bare tree in the misty morning light is very special, almost makes me look forward to late autumn and winter!

Thanks all. The farmer took the nest picture - he never missed a bird's nest.
