What's the weather like out there?

As am I, my mother was crippled up with Arthritis.   Her condition was much more severe than mine (she was dead before she reached my age in any case) and, of course, treatment was of little or no help.   Her arthritis was mainly in her knees and the only treatment was to be taken once a week by ambulance to a Spa town to sit in a mud bath for hours.  She complained rarely and was very stoic.   But she was a good predicter of the weather.

She would start telling us it was going to rain or there were going to be gales about three days before either arrived.   Of course we never believed her - thinking it was 'an old wives tale'.
I go to the Physio every six weeks to try and keep my body as supple as possible and she has been telling me for years that air pressure has an effect on arthritis and similar conditions.   Now I see in today's paper that some group has done a study on weather and its effect on conditions such  as arthritis and has come to the conclusion that such conditions are indeed affected by both wet weather and windy weather.   Seems my dear old Mum could have told them that years ago.   They only studied 2,500 people with the condition, which seems a small group to me, but it does confirm what many sufferers of arthritis know and have known for years - our aches and pains are very good at predicting forthcoming weather - certainly better than your average pine cone.

On a different note I know its going to rain as the humidity in the atmosphere leads to difficulty in breathing. I also have osteo arthritis, just bent fingers and toes, no pain. Fun aint it not.

And you usually say here yours is bad in hot, dry weather. It is a condition certainly affected by weather but all sufferers seem to like different weather.

Those old wives knew a thing or two, didn't they?

So many experts turn their noses up at 'old wives' tales' but there was very often truth behind them. My youngest daughter suffers from fibromyalgia and which is also affected by various weather conditions. Luckily I am only adversely affected by heat and humidity which just render me useless.

It was quite far out and cool that your mother was taken to sit in mud.

Low pressure - I could have told them that!

I haven't been alive long enough to predict the weather with arthritis. All I know is that tomorrow there will be weather.

I had arthritis in my knees (before knee surgery) that was affected by weather change. My knees were bone on bone and on the Xrays it showed the edges of the bones worn with bone cysts, and one knee had a bone spur. Last winter the knee that had been replaced was only a bit stiff by late winter. My non surgical knee was terribly painful all winter. I continue to have arthritis in my fingers, and degenerative disc disease. Whatever winter weather brings makes me hurt all over; whether it is sunny, freezing cold or snowing. I don't understand why, I live in a warm, snug, house. It's not like I live in a hut out in the wilderness.

My Mom and half sister had severe knee arthritis. My Dad has had arthritis in his knees since he was in his 60's. He is 91 now and his knees hurt him terribly. He never had knee replacement surgery.

We've been having some very wet weather recently, and my back has been really bad. Maybe there's a connection there too.

It's damp and humid weather that increases my arthritis, pretty much as we've been having this week. Give me a hard frost and blue skies anytime, or a heatwave, I'm OK then.
Must say, the mud bath seems quite appealing.

Fourteen years ago, I was sent to a rehab clinic for my back problem (I have scoliosis), and they were giving me mud packs which I loved.
Thankfully, I do not have arthritis (maybe I am too young for it at 51), but I know from my late grandmother how painful it is. She did not seem to notice any difference with the change of weather, but she found it very helpful to be moving about as much as possible, both before and after she'd had hip surgery. Cycling was her favourite way of getting around, and apparently as good as pain-free.

I definitely go along with the 'keep moving' readers. My Physio says if I buy and use a mobile 'scooter' soon I shall lose the ability to walk even with a stick. It is comforting to know that we are virtually all in the same boat (ie the 'getting old boat'. thanks to you all.
