Evening

The busy day is over, I have taken Tess for a second walk, eaten a couple of Kiwi Fruits (all I feel like eating), watched Antiques Road Trip and now am sitting down to write about my day.

I went into town for my three weekly manicure at ten o'clock and then, before I could change my mind, I got into the car and drove to Northallerton.
These days I don't go much beyond our little town but I needed to go to Northallerton, only around twenty five miles now that the Bedale by pass is built, so I had to bite the bullet.   There was a steady stream of traffic but I was soon there.

My reason for going is that I need to buy some new furniture.   It is easy at my age to think that it is too late to bother with any new furniture and that is what I was thinking even though my settee was becoming increasingly uncomfortable.   But chatting to my doctor on Tuesday about my arthritis and how it was now affecting my neck and shoulders he suggested I should look at where I was sitting - and indeed how I was sitting.   That evening I did just that and realised that I was leaning permanently over to the left and it really was affecting my posture (my hairdresser complains I lean to the left too).   I have always liked (and often owned) Ercol furniture so I went to Barkers Furniture Store and ordered two matching Ercol sofas to replace the two I have now (and have had for at least the last fifteen years I have worked out).

Before my drive back I sat in their cafe and had two tuna and mayo sandwiches and a pot of tea.
Coming back I again got behind a huge tractor load of bales of straw - the tail back was very long but the tractor driver made no attempt to pull in to a lay by to let anybody past.   There is a suggestion that drivers should do so - I believe five vehicles behind is the number - but I really think there should be a law about it.  Surely it must cause accidents as reckless drivers overtake when it is not safe to do so.   Interestingly quite often they do so and after another ten miles or so you notice they haven't got any further in the queue.

Needless to say, other than taking Tess round the block I have done nothing else of note today.   I shall now go and try to finish today's Times Mind Games.   Haven't watched the news again by the way.

No, don't watch the news. It will only spoil your good mood. I hope you don't have to wait long for your new sofas. It will make such a difference I am sure.

Sounds like you did plenty today. 25 miles into Northallerton, new sofas, busy day. Tractors go much faster these days on the roads so not so bad following them for a while.

Funnily enough, during last week's heatwave, I was virtually pain free, one of the things I enjoyed about the excessive heat. Today, for whatever reason, other than the temperature has dropped, all my neck and shoulder pain has returned, so it's back to the wheatey bag, heated in the microwave.

Maybe it was a very new driver and afraid to try a pull out.

Our local roads are very narrow, so being behind a tractor can be a nightmare. Yesterday I found myself behind a huge harvester, and as luck would have it he was going next door to me to cut maize for silage. I had to follow him all the way back; it was HUGE.

New settees! Will you let us see them once they are in your living room?
Yes, how we sit and sleep does affect our posture and can certainly make a difference to arthritis and other problems, such as my skoliosis. When O.K. bought a new bed last year, with individual mattresses made for us (we'd been measured and weighed and our sleeping positions tested on special beds with sensors, it took almost two hours at the shop, with a very nice lady explaining it all to us), it made a difference to how we woke up in the mornings.

There are a lot of tractors and enormous farm machinery around, some pull in letting the queue past others don't. Coming back yesterday, driving in my usual dignified 50 miles per hour, was overtaken by a fast guy, few miles down the road he was stuck at the temporary traffic lights, which are also a pain. Speed and old age don't go together.

Glad you didn't watch the news, it might have spoilt a very satisfactory day out.
My husband and I used to chuckle at the idiot who overtook six or more cars, when we found ourselves just behind him at the next set of traffic lights!
Your new sofas will be so much more comfortable for you - I hope you won't have to wait too long for their delivery date. Hope you treat us to a photo of them.

Have you tried a bamboo pillow, they are very good for relieving neck pain at night, I've had one for a year now.

I've just been reading about "hopepunk" and decided that this is how I want to view the world. Ben Fogle has written about it today in the online Daily Mail, but there are lots of other references online too. Down with misery! Brexit is not the only news!!

A busy but worthwhile day. x

I'm basically a stranger here but I want to tell you my country has been through prorogation and now it is all but forgotten. At the time it was seen as a blatant attempt to hold on to political power by a very unpopular government and equally unpopular prime minister. Reading up on it before writing to you I now realize it was far more nuanced, both sides were engaged in deceiving the electorate. The U.K. will get through this just as Canada did. Brexit, of course, makes the situation volatile and fraught but eventually this too will be resolved one way or another. We had our own highly divisive referendum which almost broke the country politically and geographically apart. This too is behind us although, sadly, a small section of the population clings to resentment. The mistake in both countries, I believe, was allowing a simple majority, 50p% plus 1 to decide. On such a contentious issue 75% would have been more sensible.
