For some reason I am very tired today. Tess is the same - I wonder if it has something to do with the fumes from the woodworm treatment, although I have kept windows and doors open to fend the smell off. Anyhow, all done and dusted. The electrician came and removed the downlights from the kitchen so there are now ten holes in the kitchen ceiling and the decorator came a while ago to look at filling them in and emulsion painting the ceiling. It will be a fortnight before he comes but as the nights are at their lightest I can easily manage without light in the kitchen apart from the lights under the wall cupboards if necessary.
I did a little bit of gardening. It is the best day we have had lately here. Nice breeze and warm sun.
And what a difference rain and then warm sun makes to the plants which all seem to have grown six inches overnight (that includes the weeds too of course). 63up was fascinating again last night and looks to be most fascinating of all tonight - the last night of the series. I have really been so interested in how these children have developed over the years. There is a sadness too - but maybe there is always sadness in our lives passing. It was brought home too by the D Day commemorations today - I remember it all so well (I was twelve years old) but thought how much more people of my age in Normandy must be feeling it today. We just heard about what was happening and worried about our loved ones who were involved (in my case my brother) but we didn't have it happening literally on our doorsteps.

I now live in the nearby small town on the edge of Wensleydale in The Yorkshire Dales. My beloved Border Terrier died a couple of years ago - I still miss her but as I am 90 and need carers I shalln't get another I have one son,who lives nearby with his wife, three grandchildren, one step grandchild, two great grandchildren and two step great grandchildren..Life is good.

It is wonderful how the local people appreciate the presence of the veterans at the ceremonies. Many were Canadian but there are not many left.
It just keeps raining here. Weeds come right up!
I have also followed the 7 Up series from the beginning and found it very moving last night. Following on from the D Day coverage it made for a very reflective evening's viewing. Not sure I like where the country is going now. Our latest book club book is 'A Gentleman in Moscow' by Amor Towles, I wonder if you have read it? Keep blogging, I look forward to your posts. Whenever I've been away for only a few days and then come back to the view of the gardens I can see from my kitchen window, I notice change, and when there has been a mix of rain and sun, things almost explode - nature is so, so good at that!
My bathroom has been renovated, so for the past 3 weeks I stayed at my sister's. Now I am back home and of course there is plenty of cleaning to do, can't wait to get started.
The DDay commemorations were so moving. I was 8 at the time and knew nothing of what was going on as my mother never let me see a newspaper or hear the news. I was protected from it all. Hearing those wonderful old men recounting their terrifying experiences made me realise how courageous our servicemen are.
Those fumes can make you feel odd. I had to lie down after de-woodworming an antique wardrobe many years ago!
I've just read Joy's blog, Diary of a (Retired)Teacher and found a poem that vaguely links with D Day.
It's by F W Harvey 1919 entitled Ducks.

My interpretation is that he's come through the 1st World War ( he's in uniform) and is gratefully musing on the small everyday things of life that have been sidelined during so many years of horror.

I wonder who invented downlights? They hardly thought out the dilemma of changing 10 lights as they slowly expire. We have the same in the kitchen and bathroom and they are difficult to unclip.
I wouldn't be able to cope with downlights either. I'm not safe on a step-ladder, and gripping and replacing at that angle would be impossible. I do see a huge amount of renovations and modern homes for sale which have them all over the house. I wonder if the people responsible realise that they are putting off many potential buyers (ie those who are getting older), the very ones who have the money to buy their homes!
Thanks for the book suggestions and thanks also for your comments on the war years. It is very similar weather here today to those days in that there is a stiff wind blowing and it is pouring with rain.
