Thursday

The electrician has been here again all day today and - as yesterday - each time did he a job he found a dozen other jobs needing doing.   This afternoon I had to have some one come to fit an isolation switch, and he also found that a stop tap had a leak - and so it goes on.   He is not coming tomorrow as he is waiting for some parts and they will not be here until next week.   Tess will be mighty pleased.   She is a nervous wreck and, as I write this she is laid across my feet = shivering.

When he did various jobs there were pops and bangs and she did not like them.   She enjoyed her usual walk out with PetPals (with a golden labrador this time) but she has always been sensitive to noise and the older she gets and worse it becomes.   I am tempted to let her sleep in my bedroom tonight but the trouble is that it creates a precedent.   She has always slept in her bed and hopefully she will feel secure in it.

Our little black male is very nervous some things don't bother him , the French air force flying over at low altitude he is fine , but thunder and he us a gibbering wreck , he shivers from the tip of his nose to the tip of his tale . This afternoon there were a couple of shotgun blasts which set all three dogs off .
It's a good job you are getting your electrics sorted , electrics all ways make me nervous luckily hubby knows what he is doing x

I once arrived home from work, to a house I had just moved into, to find a note from the central heating engineers/plumbers. DO NOT USE THE GAS FIRE. DO NOT USE THE BOILER. DO NOT USE THE SHOWER - I MEAN IT, UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES. WE WILL BE BACK TOMORROW.

Blimey, that's a lot of faults for what looks like a fairly new bungalow.
That is the problem with pets, you try and be kind and then they quickly expect it. The bedroom is the only room that my dog isn't allowed in, I hate the thought of sharing my bed with any bugs that might be lurking on the animal.

I don't like the thought of electrical faults, and you will both feel more secure when all the work is done. Poor Tess, strange noises are so upsetting for dogs.

A friend of mine was a CORGI registered gas technician working as my friend's assistant in a marble workshop. He said he would come round and fix a new hose to my gas cooker one lunchtime. He took one look at it then condemned it, disconnecting it and putting yards of warning tape around it. He charged me for his attentions. Needless to say, we did not remain friends for long.

Such jobs are best done soonest. I hope you have a good workman there (and not too expensive - did he come recommended?)

Poor wee Tess, you will have to give her a Bonio or a dog chew to take her mind off the Big Bad Workman.

I did wonder that as he seems to keep finding a lot of faults .

Electricity = professional attention. That's all I know.

Electricity always makes me nervous, too. My best friend had a horrible electrical fire at her home a few years ago caused by a mouse chewing on the insulation of a wire in her attic. Luckily they all got out and the house has been rebuilt. Good luck on getting your situation sorted quickly. Worth it, whatever the cost! Our veterinarian prescribed a light tranquilizer for one of our dogs who has a horrible time with thunderstorms. It helps if I get it into her in time - takes up to an hour to take effect.

I am sure you know what you are doing.

When you buy a home here you have a Home Inspection. The inspector spends hours looking for problems from the roof down to the basement. They crawl around everywhere. I surprised all this electrical problems where not found before.
Most of all I hope you are safe and all will be fixed soon.

cheers, parsnip

Holiday cottages have to have an an annual electricity inspection but everyone else doesn't strangely enough. Poor Tess hating all those noises, Lucy hates the window cleaners, sends her into a panic.

Poor Tess! My old cat was very nervous about sudden noises, too, and I am the same. I guess Tess will still feel safe in her bed; there won't be anyone banging about the house during the night, and she'll be able to settle down, I hope.

Our dogs always sleep in our bedroom, on their beds.. I find it comforting to have them near.. the cats sleep where ever they want!

Thinking about this, it might not mean that there had been anything wrong with your electrics, but you had an extra light fitted, didn't you? Depending on extra wiring/connections required, the electrician, who is forced to do new work to the elctricial regulations that are current now, might be having to upgrade other parts so that he can sign off the work, saying that the whole house now meets the standards that are laid down in the current regs. Even relatively modern properties can fall foul of this if the regs have been upgraded since the house was built.

Veg artist. I amsure you are right. The electrician, who is well qualified and is a personal friend so is certainly not ripping me off, He is, as you suggest, upgrading some parts to pass regulations. I have insisted he do this - I want everything to be right. But the light with a pulley for the bathroom shower unit had not been earthed and that was done only about a month before I moved in - the people had it done for me and then I paid for the installation.

Derek - my dog is not allowed in my bedroom - I agree - it is the one room she never goes in - I draw the line at that. She is right back to normal today when the electrician has not been so I am sure it was the odd noises.

Thanks to you all for your concern.
