Thursday

On and off the sun keeps putting in an appearance today, rather like somebody fiddling with the light switch.   But every brief appearance is welcome after a few wet, foggy and gloomy days.

Having visitors - even such expected and loved ones as the two who have now gone - is a mixed blessing.   I so look forward to them coming.   I enjoy every moment they are here (so does Tess as she gets longer walks) and after a couple of days they go, leaving a void which gets less and less as the days pass.

But I always over-cater and this is true of everyone who comes to stay.   They go and I am left with a fridge full of food.    This morning I have frozen everything which is freezable and within date - smoked haddock, chocolate puddings, bread, milk.   The rest I have just piled on to a plate - olives, grapes, coleslaw, Florida salad, maple beetroot, pate, brie - that was my lunch.
Now I am going to the physiotherapist for my regular manipulation and when I return it will be to make tomato and onion soup for tea.   Then the cupboard will be bare again.

I do the same when I have visitors, and especially at Christmas. Invariably I will find something special tucked away at the back of the larder in the New Year which was meant for Christmas.
The good think is that you will have all those left overs to eat - tasty things tucked away in the fridge and freezer, and no cooking for a day or two.

How odd. Is there a fear of failure or that you are being judged on food you can provide?

Best thing is to me like me and never invite people round, saves all kinds of anxieties and stresses.
As for food within date, I ignore all that and have eaten lots of stuff a week or even more, past it's so called use by date and suffered no ill effects.

I am impressed you think it's too much to deal with and then hey, presto, it's sorted.

I rarely cook meals unless somebody comes to eat - I do invite friends for meals mainly because I enjoy entertaining and enjoy the company. As I eat out with friend W at least once a week and with three friends (including W) every Sunday - and usually with another friend on another day I think cooking a proper meal is unnecessary. Jacket potato stuffed with streaky bacon is a good old standby.

You could phone the pizza delivery service and they'll be round in a jiffy. Sorry, just joking . . . :-).

I always over cook too Weaver. This week I have been Spring Cleaning my kitchen and cleaning cookers and fridges ready for Christmas. Yes, I now it is December, but it needed doing. Every time I planned it, something happened and prevented me from doing it. Bev

Worse still are those guests who are so keen not to cause any unnecessary trouble that they announce that they will take you out to dinner when you've already got loads of food in. Though we should, I suppose, think ourselves very fortunate. It remember that my aunt would never have come to see us without bringing at least a tin of Spam as a contribution to the meal. And we were glad of the donation too. You're lucky with your intermittent light source - the bulb seems to have blown down here!

What is a Florida salad?

I'd like to ask what is maple beetroot but I dare not. Has the world gone crazy?

Derek Faulkner said...

Just googled it and it seems as though you roast and glaze beetroot with maple syrup and other bits.

Rachel. It is sold in tubs by the Co-op and is just beetroot, shredded and mixed, I guess, a drop of maple syrup so that it is slightly sweet. I love it. Beetroot is so good for you but does vary in sweetness - I have two or three tubs of this each week and usually eat it with cold meat or cheese.
Viola. Florida salad is a mixture of apple (cubed), mandarin orangem, pineapple, and grapes in mayo. Makes a nice addition to a cold buffet table.
Gwil - not unknown. Sometimes on Saturday evenings my son and his wife come round and we have a Chinese or a Pizza. Never an Indian - not my kind of food (wish it was)

It sounds as though you provided a feast, Weaver. I always enjoy the food the day after entertaining, its as though somebody else had prepared it1 Its the same on Boxing Day, lots of tasty food and everyone just helps themselves without any effort - lovely!

I always read your posts for a weather report. I'd hoped to be in the Dales in November but illness kept us at home. Now we plan to visit in the New Year so I'll be checking your posts for snow! (Bolton Castle on your header is where we had our wedding reception over a half a century ago.)

Share my garden - if you come this way in the new year let me know and perhaps we can have coffee together.
