The year is ending.

Celebrating New Year when one is alone  is no   fun.   Best to go to bed at the usual time and wake up to the new year.   It's only another day after all.
That seems to be the view which is not only mine but that of all my friends who are now living alone.    Doesn't mean that we are necessarily lonely or sad (although some of us might be).   I don't think there is anyone in the UK who will be sorry to say good-bye to 2018 (except perhaps some of those sad souls who have made it across the Channel in those horrendous boats and who. although they are 'in custody',  have at least  in their eyes made it here.)

The sunset tonight has been spectacular - not sure whether  that is a good or a bad omen.   'What will be will be' - but history will certainly not look upon 2018 as a successful year for the UK.   What happens in the next twelve months will possibly make the position clearer.   Surely it can't get any less clear.

I met a friend in town this afternoon by accident and we went into our usual cafe for a coffee.   It was heaving and the owner, who came to chat for a minute, said it had been heaving all day and that almost everyone had had a full English breakfast.   He suggested they were all lining their stomachs for a full night's drinking celebration.   So we just have to assume that most folk just carry on as normal.

I'm listening to the music on the radio - Tony Blackburn 'Sounds of the 60s' - "Remember this Golden Classic" - It's great for a certain age group!!!

It sems that EVERYWHERE is heaving! My son took recycling and rubbish to the recycling centre this morning, only to find that the queue was impossibly long and tailed right back to an extremely busy junction. So he decided to head for another recycling plant several miles away - queues there too but he managed to get in eventually.
Then to Morrisons in town for veg, bread and milk - to find the car park was full to bursting. Turned round and headed for the next town and Tesco - same result! Queues into the parking area.
So he headed back home and bought what he needed from our small village shop.
What's it all about? The supermarkets are only closed for ONE DAY!

I wish you everything that is good and healthy and uplifting for the New Year, Weaver.

Pat, I forgot to say don't forget to watch Freddy Frinton in 'Dinner for One'. I think it's hilarious. I believe it's on TV over there tonight for the first time. It's a New Year cult over here - must be on 40 different channels. Happy hogmanay! Anno buona! Happy New Year.

We can only hope for a better year than we've just had. I don't know if we will have a long stay in Italy, depends on decisions yet to be made and not by me. Hope 2019 is a happy and healthy one for us all with much blogging to come and many trips out for you, all the best.

It will be an early, sober night here too, although there's always the chance of being woken up by in-laws who think it's kind to ring at midnight!!!
Happy and peaceful 2019 to you all.

Happy New Year - my year this year as the many that have passed before has been a mixture of highs and lows. Sometimes when I look back I often remember the bad times more but having a blog helps me to see how many good moments there have been.

I think going to bed at your normal time, and hopefully getting a good nights sleep is a brilliant idea. What better way to welcome in the New Year than to be rested and refreshed.

All the very best for the coming year Pat. Xx

I'm going to stay up "late" to watch Spectre - it finishes at twenty to 11, then I'll be in bed PDQ. At least I won't get woken here by drunk people walking by, which was the strange thing that always happened at the smallholding. No idea who they were and where they were going but every year was the same - rude awakening at 1am!

We'll be happily in bed by 11. Best wishes for a Happy New Year!

Happy New Year to you Pat. Like you, we shall go to bed at our normal time and wake up to a New Year tomorrow. All the celebrating in the world won't change it, that's for sure!

I too hope that 2019 is a better year then this one, particularly healthwise and also less frustrating - so many "blocks" against what needs to be done (in Parliament too . . .)

Wishing you all the best anyway and looking forward to your posts in 2019.

We are going to bed at our normal time as we won't be able to stay awake
long enough to see the new year in.
Fireworks may wake us up but we'll see.
I hope 2019 will be a good year for you Pat.
You never know we might turn up on your doorstep one day!

I always go to bed before the bells, Pat, and then get wakened by the revellers and the blimmin fireworks! Despite being Scots, we don’t celebrate new year at all. It was surprising civilised in the shops today and Sainsbugs is open tomorrow which is strange as it’s a Bank Holiday here. I have made soup today and completed my christmas jigsaw so that’s now back in the box. Happy New Year in 2019 and I’d just like to say how much I admire your resilience in the face of all your challenges. Thank you for your blog-I look forward to reading it each day. X

Going to bed at my usual 10.00 tonight will mean I get woken up again at midnight by bloody fireworks that then go on for up to two hours after. Nothing wrong with being on my own New Years Eve, quite enjoy it.As for 2018, apart from the glorious heatwave, which I enjoyed, it hasn't been any worse than any other year for me and I doubt that 2019 will be any better. We'll still have MP'S acting like pratts, still have migrants boating across the channel - gawd knows why, apart from too many "do gooders" in this country who seem a soft touch.
Sorry if this sounds harsh but we can't all sing from the same hymn sheet.

It’s New Year’s Day here, so happy new year to you . We didn’t stay up to see it in, in our late sixties we’ve seen enough in to be reasonably sure it can make it in without our supervision! It’s warm and still here today, and a lovely day for taking a walk in the bush. We have a wildlife sanctuary right on our doorstep and over the last ten years the increase in native bird life has been extraordinary. Before then we never saw a third or kaka in our backyard, now the tui compete at the feeder and drive the smaller birds off. We are also fortunate that most people have left Wellington for beaches around the country and so there are no crowds anywhere!
Enjoy your Nee Year’s day , however you choose to spend it. And thank you for sharing your blog.

Beachcomber - do hope you do turn up one day. Wish I could see how to get on to your blog to leave a comment but I can't.
Thanks to every one of you and very best wishes for 2019. You will never know just how much you have all helped me through the past couple of years.

My husband and I both worked in banks in our youth so New Year celebrations were not for us, as bank staff worked on New Year's Eve to ensure all accounts were balanced ready for the New Year and it meant working till midnight if necessary. We never did get into the habit of celebrating and I shall toddle off to bed in a minute knowing that 2019 will arrive even without my help!
A Happy and Healthy New Year to you Pat and I hope our confused country will have a happier year to look forward to.

I just hope that a quote I saw on line in which Gladstone said if the power of love would overcome the love of power the world could live in peace would come true! I know it is a Pollyanna wish but wouldn't it be lovely. Take care.

Well pretty much as I expected, between 11 and 2 overnight they could of recorded the sound effects for the Battle of the Somme here, so intense and loud were the fireworks.

One of the few good things about being very deaf is that when I go to bed and take out my hearing aids I hear absolutely nothing. If there were joyous festivities and fireworks at midnight here I certainly didnt hear them. Happy New Year to you all.
