Finished.

The sitting room is finished.   I went out for lunch with my friends as usual and when I returned the painter had put the furniture straight, put down the rugs, vacuumed the carpet and left a note telling me to do no more for at least a day to allow the gloss paint to dry and the emulsion paint over wallpaper to dry well before rehanging the pictures.   Tess is disgusted with being kept out of the sitting room and having to spend the evenings in the kitchen.   She is not alone - not enjoying it either.

On the plus side I am keeping the central heating on higher than usual to help with the drying out process so at least we are not cold.   My cleaning lady is planning to come in the morning to help me return the sitting room to normal - sadly we will not be able to do this but, never mind, by next week end it will all be done and I must say it looks lovely.   I am so pleased with it.  That is another job I can tick off my list.

Here in North Yorkshire it has been bitterly cold today although mostly sunny.  I think the cold coinciding with the change of the hour has made it feel as though Winter has really arrived.   It is my birthday on Hallowe'en and it usually fell during Half Term in my teaching days.  As I remember it we almost always had beautiful autumn weather.  Perhaps, like our childhood, we only remember the good weather.

Nice lunch today - prawn salad with chips (self indulgent) followed by raspberry and coconut gateau with ice cream.  I can't tell you how good it is to not have to think about what to have for Sunday lunch.

Your Sunday lunch sounds delicious and I am so glad you are pleased with the decorating. It's a shame you and Tess have been banished from the sitting room for a while!
It has been a lovely sunny day here but with a biting wind, but we are approaching winter so it is at least 'proper' weather for the time of year.

I suppose you weren't in the Dales when you were teaching so probably not so cold as you are now and you were romping about enjoying yourself and not noticing the cold in any case. Forget the weather for a while.

I came across your blog when viewing another one I follow. I hope that if and when I reach your years I will be as active and productive as you. You have an interesting and busy life. I have added you to the list of blogs I follow. Hope you can get your front room sorted out quickly.

I just realised your decorator was working Sunday! Colder here now too and sunny.

The worst is over and your decorator sounds very conscientious, not many would have put things back or hoovered. We too were out at friends for lunch today proper Italian long lunch with a family, nothing nicer, They even offered us left over cannelloni to bring home for dinner, so sweet but I explained we wouldn’t be eating again today, so they gave us a bottle of wine. Have a good week, keep warm.

When you can finally get into the sitting room just think how perfect it will be.
Make sure you have a window cracked and a fan on to get the smell out. Even the low smell paint I can smell.
I still can not believe how cold it is, here we are having coll nights and nice warm days.
Fall in Tucson after the super hot days of summer is a present !

cheers, parsnip and badger

You have the nice bit to come now that your decorating is finished, and when you can get back into your sitting room, you'll be able to sit back and breathe out! I was in North Yorkshire over the weekend, so I know how cold it was up there. We had blue skies, punctuated by short, sharp showers in Ripon. Your lunch sounds delicious!

You are lucky to have a decorator who does so many "extras" for you - over here, they would not dream of putting your furniture straight for you, let alone hoover the carpet! I am sure it will look very nice once you have put your pictures etc. back up; it looked good before and now you won't have to think about redecorating for years.
We had a cold weekend, too, but grey with some very welcome rain, but it was nowhere near enough to saturate the soil after months of draught.
Yes, the combination of early darkness and cold weather makes it feel as if Christmas was just round the corner (which it nearly is!).

You will soon be able to enjoy your newly decorated sitting room. I wish I could get mine done but I shall have to wait until some other work is done. The wallpaper is driving me crazy.

Your Sunday lunch sounds to have been delicious and how lovely to have such a helpful decorator! It's been a bit 'parky' here in Somerset too.

How wonderful that the decorator put things back. Workers like that are few and far between.

Your lunch sounds wonderful.

Yes, I agree with Starting Over, how lovely your decorator put the things back, that was really considerate. Good tradesmen/women are to be valued. We engaged the services of a lovely (tidy) painter who painted our garden boundary wall last summer, and we'd certainly have him again for any such work. Husband has always done all our painting and decorating, but I said that at almost 83 he should conserve what energy he has for jobs which are intricate and not those which just take brawn, really, such a painting a long wall on both sides. And when it was done he admits that it was worth paying someone in this instance to do the work.
Your lunch sounded lovely - how sensible to go out on a Monday, often a bit of a miserable day and one my late mother hated as she associated it with it being wash day when she was a child, and the copper on and the house filled with steam if the wet washing had to be dried around the fire (she was a Lancashire lass, born in Rochdale known in those days as Gracie Fields' town!)
Do post photos of your newly decorated room, Pat. And very best wishes for your forthcoming birthday!
