A Good Feeling.

Maybe it is just me but I get such a good feeling when I have finished some chore I didn't want to start.   Today it was emptying the garage of accumulated rubbish.

Over the past few weeks the detritus has built up.
First of all the dog had fleas and, after de-fleaing her I threw out all her bedding and bought new.   The old stuff, after spraying with flea killer, went into a plastic bag and was put in the garage.   Every parcel which came in a box was dealt with and the box put in the garage too.   Then last week the decorator left his empty paint tins.   And then of course there were all the newspapers.

It is not a nice day here - cold and wet - thoroughly miserable.   This morning hot chocolate with my usual Tuesday friends started the morning off well.   After this it was manicure morning and that made my hands feel good too.
I arrived home as a friend called to try to stick back the cover of the dishwasher in my built in kitchen.   The cover has come adrift and needs some attention so he is trying.   After lunch I looked out on the wet, miserable scene and decided I couldn't face doing the job today.

It was at this point that I had a serious talk with myself.  'For goodness sake woman, get a hold of yourself and get the job done.'   So I did.   The men at the tip are lovely and so helpful.   They did all the emptying for me (even the curtains which had come down from my sitting room window and are not going back) and I drove back home in the pouring rain.   Tess had come with me so we had a quick walk and then came in to a nice warm bungalow.   And I feel very satisfied with myself.   A good day all round.  I give myself a metaphorical pat on the back.   Back tomorrow.

Good for you! A gold star for your work... I love a mental gold star when I finish something I've put off or don't feel like doing.

Just a good feeling all around.
With the help of son I am cleaning studio after 2 years of just dumping everything in there.
I need a tidy home (I have 2 cats 3 gud dugs) but a mess makes me crazy. My mind works better that way.

cheers, parsnip and badger

I'm guilty of this myself. And yet, when I set to it, the job never takes as long as I anticipated. X

Pretty much similar weather here on Sheppey today. A strong and very cold N wind straight off the sea and rain until lunch time, then a thoroughly dark and cold afternoon leading to getting dark by 4.30 - how can people prefer the winter to a nice hot summer?

I also see that 75% of Venice has been flooded after violent storms there.

It has been very windy here all day but no rain, as usual.
Well done! Can you come over and clear out my cellar for me next?

You have done so well today, Pat, carting stuff to the tip. But don't your bin men come around for re-cycling stuff? I would've thought you could've put newspapers out for re-cycling for a home collection (our take newspapers, foil, all kinds of paper, cardboard, glass, plastic, tins, and even clothes if bagged up separately.)
Yes, I saw that Venice had flooded. I recently learned that this is called the "aqua alta" (roughly translated, high tide ... I presume aqua meaning water and alta from altitude) another bit of useless information for a future quiz show, perhaps?
Do you have a professional manicure? I've started having this about once every 6 weeks, and I love having it done.

Whilst the decorator was an extremely good tradesman in keeping the area he worked in clean and left tidy, I think it was remiss of him to leave his empty paint tins in your garage.

Derek Faulkner said...

I agree with Rachel, it does strange that having done such a good job of re-tidying your living room, that he then leaves his used paint tins in your garage, especially considering your age and lack of mobility.

Getting horrible jobs done and ticked off the list can be very satisfying.

Well done - nothing is more satisfying than a job well done (and something off the to-do list).

We need a tip visit too and will try and accomplish that this week, although the days are already filling up. My husband's had a sudden call to come and have his cataract operation done this Saturday so no heavy lifting after that for a bit.

Oh those boring but necessary tasks. Good for you in accomplishing what we in the USA call a dump run.

I'm like you Pat, I put off jobs that need doing and wonder why once I’ve done them. Often half an hour will see them completed.
Today it's been pruning the roses round the windows.
Unlike you we've had a glorious day; we even sat in the garden having coffee with our next door neighbour.
Sorting out the roses is a task I’ve been putting off because I’m not keen on climbing ladders.
Now it’s done I feel extraordinarily proud of myself!
Our bin men are lovely and offered to take my prunings whilst they were doing our bins. Unfortunately I must have absentmindedly out my secateurs in the tub too as I can't find them anywhere.
I hope that you are still basking in the rosy glow of a good job done.

Rachel and Derek - only one of the paint tins was empty and I told him to leave that as I intended to go to the tip. The other two have quite a lot a paint left in them - whether it will ever be used I don;'t know but I might need it sometime for touching up.

Thanks everyone for your comments.

Well done you! I have one major job over Winter, to do some kitchen tiling up at the barn. I can assure you that when finished, my feeling will be just like yours!

Do you have two bins, one for recycling rubbish and one for everything else? My two cover all my needs. Newspapers and card go in recycling bin here. I have 't been to a tip for 40 years. You puzzle me. I am glad you had an agreement with the decorator. You are too kind though. Let yourself off a few things from time to time.

Derek Faulkner said...

In many areas people have three bins, two as Rachel says and a third, that you pay an annual sum for, that takes garden rubbish. There are however, restrictions on what can be put in the general rubbish bins, such as electrical items, oils, garden rubbish, soil and hardcore, and in some areas paint pots. Those items and some larger ones have to be taken to the local dump, something most people do during an average year.

Derek. Here I have two bins - a grey one for specified rubbish - collected once a fortnight and a green one (twenty two pounds a year) for all the garden rubbish. The green one, plus all newspapers, tins, bottles and plastic, is collected once a fortnight too. Our rubbish collection here is excellent. But of course professional painters cannot take their tins to the tip, they have to pay a private company so it was logical for him to leave his empty tin here. The reason I took my own rubbish to the tip was that my son was away on holiday and he usually puts the rubbish out for me as my drive is steep.
Rachel - details in my answer to Derek above. The tip is only about half a mile from where I live, there is a nice walk from the tip for my dog, the tip men are lovely and empty the car for me while I sit in it and quite often stuff (large boxes etc.)builds up in my garage and I have a clear out. If it gets too bad my son does it for me.
Thanks to you all for joining in.

Putting off jobs that need doing, I know all about that. I need to fit a new cat flap to the back door to cover the gaping hole left when I broke the previous one.

Well I am still confused about the newspapers and cardboard. Never mind. Thanks.

I think after all that you deserve the pat on the back. You are entitled to feel smug! Sometimes it would be all too easy to give in to idleness, but keeping going is what keeps us going.

It is a tad confusing Rachel but I guess that Pat has given the wrong colour for the re-cycling bin, perhaps the re-cycling one should be blue or black.
By the way Pat, I was listening to a discussion on Radio 5 Live earlier about children learning to play musical instruments at school and the instrument they all want to play - yes, the ukelele.

Well done you!

I confess I overdid it the other day and pulled something in my back, and so my good lady treated me to a packet of bath salts from the Dead Sea. After a warm bath I feel much better! I even chopped up a branch that has been lying on the path for half a week. The thicker pieces will go in the wood store for winter.

Many happy returns.

Derek and Rachel - we have a blue plastic heavy duty bag for all newspapers and light weight cardboard (cereal packets etc. - these must be opened up flatand then a large black plastic box with a divided - one side for tins and glass and the other side for plastic. Works very well.
