Jab Day

The highlight of today has been queueing at the surgery for my over 65's flu jab.   So that's another Winter job done - cleaning out the wardrobes last week, flu jab this week and bulbs planted.   I am a great list maker and there is great satisfaction in ticking off another thing.  Now the planters either side of the front door need filling with violas and pansies (not the most imaginative winter planting but up here in Yorkshire the weather can turn pretty foul and they are the safest bet) and last year's bulbs (which I dug up and have saved) need pushing in in odd corners.   Also I have ordered four short bearded iris (2 pussycat pink and 2 forever blue) which should be here any day and will need planting.   As they are going near to the front of the garden I shall be able to plant those rather than leave it to my gardener.   I must say that the older I get the more I get like my father, who was a great armchair gardener.

On an entirely different subject isn't it heartening to hear the lovely story of John's zip  wire and his raising of over five thousand pounds for his chosen charity?  When I hear and read of all the awful things people do it is so good to read of something like this happening isn't it?

I haven't heard anything this year from my local surgery about flu jabs and must find out what the procedure is.
I love pansies and violas, and enjoy them every year along with all the varieties of flowering bulbs.
Well done John on his fund raising adventure. It is nice to hear about people doing good things for a change.

Us Canadians aren’t allowed to even start getting our flu jabs until the end of October. Guess that goes to sho how the different flus travel. Also our winters are different being longer. Lucky us haha. I think violas and pansies are wonderful colour for the winter. Our varieties here are hardy till -10C. Love how you write about your day to day life. I too think Sunday’s are the worst for loneliness. I am a widow of seven years. Cheers from Canada Jean

Flu shots have been going on here for at least a month. I read that an awful number of Americans died of the flu last year. 80,000. I even checked Snopes to see if that wasn't a global number. It's not.

I am at the docs for my regular bp check Monday and will be asking re flu jab as I have letter from Health authority to have it. As I do every year. Have you had the pneumonia jab? You only have to have it once. John is amazing. So glad he has remained in that lovely village.

I have not had my flu shot yet but will in October. My husband and I also get the over 65 shot as it is recommended for us. I'm glad you have had your jab and can now check that "to do" off your list!

It truly is wonderful what John has done in raising so much for charity. I think he could be a professional fundraiser for charities as he has such a good way with people. He is also a brave soul to go on a zip line as high as that one!

John is amazing. I am so pleased he raised so much for the Samaratins. How do you keep track of your list? I never seem able r.

Like you, Pat, without lists, I would get little done. I need reminders.

I couldn't exist without my reminders/lists. The work surface in my kitchen always has several post-its stuck to it with things to do written on. I've given up on winter pansies, they always look amazing and colourful in the garden centre, I buy them, put them in and they promptly stop flowering. We're continuing to have lovely warm and sunny days here, after chilly starts, but the dryness is increasing by the day and a third dry winter on the trot is looking almost certain.

A lot of people around me have already started with colds and flus, not the worrying kind of flu like we had in the spring, when our hospitals were completely inundated with flu patients.
I like my lists, too, so satisfying to tick them off!

I hope the flu jab is effective and saves everyone from flu this winter.

Thanks Rache, I'm having mine tomorrow.

I'm not having the flu jab. I had it a couple of years ago and felt really unwell for a couple of weeks with nausea, I vowed then, never again.

Armchair gardeners are really landscape architects. Like gentleman farmers, they keep their hands clean AND make more money.

My son put the compost in my tubs for me today, so now it is put in the pansies and violas.

Thanks everyone.

I received a letter from the surgey to tell me that they will be holding 2 Saturday Flu jab sessions; I will be away on the October date so I have booked an appointment in November (a bit late in the year, but it can't be helped.) They also warned that they won't be sending letters again and instead there will be a poster in the surgery and information on thei website. It strikes me that this might cause many people to miss out next year - I have put a reminder on the end of my calendar to mark a date in September 2019 to arrange my jab.
My son is coming with me tomorrow to get some bags of gravel and compost - I like to have a 50/50 mix to plant my bulbs in as they hate sitting in sodden compost. I want to get them all planted before Saturday when I go away for a week.
