Oh the beauty!
I have just watched the final stage of Le Tour de France - and thoroughly enjoyed it. And one thing struck me forcibly. What a beautiful city Paris is - particularly from the air. It is many years since I went - and I don't suppose I shall go again - and I suppose seeing it from the air means that one gets a better idea of how the city is laid out. But I must say - the race was exciting, I was delighted to see Geraint win (he seems such a nice chap) and my goodness me it must have done marvels for the Tourist Industry. Who wouldn't wish to go to Paris after seeing it from the air?

As always, it was great to watch. I'm expecting to hear much more about it tomorrow as t'other half was watching from the Champs Elysees this afternoon.

Only 3,5 hours bij TGV and I have never been there!
I do not follow the Tour de France but I know it has millions of fans, and at least usually they are not violent like football hooligans!
As for Paris - same as for Ivy, it is only 3,5 hours by TGV from here. Two of my cousins with their families live and work in Paris, and have been doing so for over 20 years, but so far I have been there only once. I did enjoy my visit but still prefer England for my holidays - may have something to do with the fact that my English is so much better than my French!
I love to see both cities and the countryside by air. It gives you a whole new perspective. Are you familiar with a free download called "Google Earth"? It is a mapping program that gives you the actual pictures of the area plus has "Street View" so you can travel the actual roads. I doubt that I will ever be able to travel out of the US but with this program I easily travel the whole world! I know it is not the same but I do enjoy it. And you know what, of all the places I can go on this my favorite is to go where my Grandmother's house used to be. Memories.
I've known Geraint since he was 12..he is a lovely person,hasn't changed..he is just as you see him.A well deserved win, and popular in the peloton too.
Congratulations to Geraint. I have only been to France once but didn't visit Paris as we were driving quite a way down beyond Tours to Chignon. I think it is a beautiful country and was fascinated by the old part of Chignon. We did stop to see the Bayeux Tapestry which was wonderful. I have enjoyed sitting with windows slightly open and listening to the rain today. I hope it doesn't get uncomfortably hot again, though some people like it.

So much better to see Paris like this, rather than through riots, terrorist attacks, or strikes. Well done to Geraint; a well deserved win.
A bird's-eye view, so different to what we normally see. Where possible I like to take in the view from tall buildings. I think of the Tour as part sporting event, part documentary.

I usually enjoy the scenery far more than the race in the Tour de France.
Yes I used to feel the need for a trip to Paris after the end of the Tour. However the one year we went to watch the last day Paris was busy of course, dirty and we were constantly harassed by beggars which rather put me off wanting to spend more time there. I’ve heard people say they’ve found Rome shabby and dirty too, sad as they are both beautiful cities.
I've no interest in a load of blokes on bikes but on the several times that I've been to Paris I've thoroughly enjoyed it - great city.
Interesting replies here. Tend to agree about dirt, beggars etc. - they seem to be everywhere now in the big cities - maybe they always were, so perhaps from the air is the best.
as to Le Tour -I am not a sports fan at all but I can't help but admire anyone who devotes their whole life to achieving such perfection in any sport - and thus giving such pleasure to millions. Geraint was such a modest young man in his speech and everyone who spoke about him - his friends, his teachers at school, his trainers, his fellow team mates - had nothing but praise for his achievement So I say let's give him great credit where it is due.
I loved Paris when I visited. I had a fellow officer stationed there working at the Eurotunnel border. She lived in central Paris near the Louvres. They were filming the Da Vinci Code at the time.
I don't think anybody anybody wouldn't agree that those cyclists are some of the fittest athletes on this planet but as an entertainment sport I find it incredibly boring, apart from the odd incursion by a disgruntled public. I certainly don't think the Welsh guy should get a knighthood for winning a bike race, as is now being suggested.
Paris looked marvellous from the air, I particularly liked the Palace of Versailles as I never realised how extensive the grounds are. Loved the Notre Dame sitting there in the Seine and the shot of a very modern house was it Corbusier? However, I was hoping to see more clips from the other stages rather than endless legs pumping up and down, I was trying to read ....most distracting!
