Bank Holiday Monday

Bank Holidays are days to be got through when one lives alone I feel.   Families go out together on picnics or to visit National Trust Houses and the like.   Us loners have a day like any other and are quite pleased when the day is over.

In addition it has been very hot here so that it has been a real effort to do anything other than sit about.   I planted one of the three plants I bought - a thistle with deep red flowers - watered the pots that needed a drink, cooked a light lunch and then I am ashamed to say I slept for a couple of hours on the settee.

That doesn't mean I shall not be tired at bedtime.   I am tired already.   Tess and I have just walked to the field and back.   In the field we had a brief word with Mr Aberdeen Angus and his group of Fresian 'misses'.    There was a lot of flirting going on amongst the ladies but Mr Bull just lay there, chewing his cud and gazing into space.    I am sure he will do his job when the time is right.

I was sitting on the patio and could smell all of the grills cooking hamburgers. It smells so good. I have a grill but don't know how to use it and it needs a good cleaning. So, I'll just sniff the air.

I took Laura to a nursery across town. She demanded, why, when there is a nursery across the road. "Because I want to do something!" We bought four plants and now we're taking a nap.

Strangely we do not have bank holidays in Scotland.

Why would you feel ashamed to sleep on your settee for 2 hours? You did not have anything urgent to do, nobody was feeling neglected by your nap, not even Ress!
It was very warm and damp here today, 30 Celsius, and it is not even officially summer! I was working from home and felt so tired in the early afternoon that I took a rest on my bed with my eyes closed for half an hour. I really wanted to sleep but my mind would not relax deep enough.

I was out in the heat yesterday and I am still tired today. Weather really affects my fibromyalgia.
Today I was going to look for a friend for iwinston but I think I will wait till tomorrow.

Today is Memorial Day in America and I feel overwhelmed.

Hope tomorrow will be better for you.

cheers, parsnip

A hot day here.

Having a snooze on the sofa sounds like the perfect way to spend a Bank Holiday. I treat them the same as any other day and prefer to stay at home rather than join the crowds trying to enjoy themselves.

It's nice to have a quiet day to oneself every now and then. We live beside a river surrounded by woods and fields, no neighbors within sight although not far away. There's a campground nearby, so we heard fireworks last night and today when the air is right we can smell charcoal fires. Our supper will be cooked inside on the stove. At our age, carrying food outside is too much bother and doesn't taste as good, not to me anyway. A perfect day for a guiltless nap!! You'll be back to your normal activities tomorrow, no doubt, so rest up and savor the quiet dear Pat.
I thoroughly enjoy reading your wonderful postings - they're a true gift!

I love the way certain Bulls just lie about, chewing, and feigning indifference. A bit like some humans I suppose.

Is it a special thistle because your name is Thistlethwaite?

The frog unsuccessfully tried to leave an answer for D, about the hairy bicycle descent.

Sounds a good day. We always stay at home on Bank Holidays, must look up why it is called that....It is almost too hot with all that sun ;)

I had a stay at home and sit in the sun or watch tennis day. Several people phoned to check I was OK which was good

Bank holidays meant banks were closed and no business could be transacted and thus the introduction of bank holidays gave the working man a day's holiday because factories and businesses closed. They were very popular at the introduction because the working man got few days off. This was the reason for the introduction, to help the workers.

I feel that way on holidays sometimes too. With 4 sons and a passle of grandchildren you'd think we'd be busy but for the past several years that hasn't bee the case. I have to admit that I usually enjoy not having all the hullabaloo and mess--after years of it, I am okay with a quiet day at home while the world parties. A naighbor came over and cut some grass for us,and came back later with his family to pick mulberries. Other than that, it was quiet, and hot and humid too.

Thank you for your kind comment on my blog Pat. I don't think I am brave enough to take orders!

Sometimes I'm ok being alone on holidays, others times I feel a bit melancholy. I wasn't exactly depressed about it on Monday (my daughter and SIL live close by, but they had other plans for the day, and I certainly don't expect them to be with me on every holiday), but I did wish I had someone to grill a hamburger with, and then sit outside on the front porch and drink iced tea and chat with. But the dogs and I just had a lazy day together...
