The Gas Man Cometh.

Alright, I admit it.  I am just a little bit frightened of gas.   This is probably because I have never had it before - for the last twenty odd years my heating and cooking have been done with oil and before that with electricity.    So, when a fortnight ago my gas central heating boiler began to switch itself off at will and the blue light began to flash on and off, I began to panic a little, although pressing the reset button brought it back on again.

This morning the chap came to service the boiler and to reassure me that there is nothing to be scared of with gas.   Having just come in and found the bungalow warm and cosy and the heating chugging along nicely, I feel much better about things.

Too late to go to my usual Strugglers meeting, I decided to go and do a bit of shopping before our trip out tomorrow.  A friend rang and together we went out for a bit of lunch at the Golf Club.   As usual it was delicious.   She had mince with herby dumplings and nice veg andI had my usual Taste Platter (deep friend salmon goujons, camembert, mushrooms, onion rings and chicken - all served with chips and salad.   A glass of soda and lime before and coffee afterwards - and friend G lent me four good books to read, so I have come home replete in all senses of the word.

Twice round the block with Tess, now  I shall feed her and then watch Antiques Road Trip.   More about the books I have borrowed another day.

I understand the gas issue. It can be a little scary.
Glad it is sorted and life can go back to normal.

Always good to have lunch with a friend.

I grew up with gas, but I have to admit to being a bit edgy about having gas heating in our new house. As I get older, I'm worried a bit more about things that never bothered me before. Life experience? Neurosis? Hmmm.

There is so many safety mechanisms with gas now accidents are few and far between. My hob rings shut down if the flame is blown out.

I've never had gas but I imagine it would take a while to get used to. That sounds a very tasty lunch.

As long as one knows how to work and understand the controls one is almost there. I hope the man was able to explain the lights, what to expect, and what they mean, for you.

Gas scares me, too...my dad sold heating oil, and our family motto was " Go modern. Go gas. Go BOOM!".....

I'm surprised at so many people having fears about gas, there has been gas in the house since I was five years old and it lit the house via the old fashioned gas mantle and it's never given me reason to be scared of it.
Your lunching out makes me chuckle, have you actually stayed in and made a lunch this year so far. Perhaps you should start a new blog called "Pensioners Palate" whereby you give your verdict on the various eating establishments that you visit.

Weave,I’m glad you have it sorted out about the gas. I don’t prefer gas stoves or gas heat. I’ve always had electric. I’m set in my ways. I do cook on gas at Bible Camp in the Summer for the kids. It seems to be okay. Gabs

I have to say i'm a little bit afraid of gas myself Pat... or should i say i have a healthy respect for it.. We have gas..We have two fireplaces and they are both gas and my cook stove is gas... Our central heating is electric as is our water heater..

It is pouring rain here and probably will for the next few days... Much much needed rain.. The temperature is suppose to drop tonight and tomorrow so ice is expected but the next day warms just fine.. So it should be short lived..

I'am spending my rainy day staining some boards and painting some trim and painting a picture onto canvas.. relaxing all in all.. We had leftover stew for our meal and the rest of the evening we will relax.. maybe some TV later.. Big Hugs! deb

I truly enjoy your descriptions of food. They make me hungry even if I just ate.
Perhaps you should take Derek's suggestion and start a food blog!
And, I'm glad you got the gas sorted out. I hope the gas man put your mind completelyat ease.

We switched from oil to gas and absolutely love the efficiency and cleanliness of it. We also had a gas stove installed in our cabin as well.

Like you, I am a little bit scared of gas, probably partly because the only times I use a gas cooker are when we are in "our" cottage in Ripon, maybe a fortnight each year.
At home, the central heating is gas but the cooker is electric, and I have been used to work with such cookers since I was a little girl. The house I live in has now four flats, the last one having been added only last autumn. Until then, we had two gas boilers, one servicing the ground floor flat and the other one the attic and the middle flat (mine). The new underground flat has its own boiler. They need servicing once a year, and we've had to replace our boiler last year - maybe you remember my stories about not having hot water and heating for more than two weeks last March.

I can sympathise with the gas issue. I started out cooking quite happily with gas, having grown up with it in the house, but subsequent moves always brought electric cookers so I am back to being a novice again. Glad it is all sorted and you are making friends with your gas boiler. Your day sounds very pleasant - no doubt it ended with feet up and plenty of choice of reading matter.

I hope the Yorkshire Tourist Board are supporting this worthy blog! If not, they should be. I reckon restaurants and pubs must be doing a roaring trade when I read of the wonderful meals on offer.

I don't think we've ever had gas heat, though we do have propane for the stove and fireplaces

Sometimes, I wish we had gas, it's so instant. I grew up with it and when I had to use an electric cooker I really struggled with it. I now cook on an Aga, which was another learning curve, but by far my favourite to use - wouldn't mind a single gas hob for speed sometimes though. I remember coming in from school and clicking on the gas fire, that instant heat was wonderful.

I share your apprehension of gas because I worry about all things to do with power, gas, electricity, oil . . . I'm always waiting for them to escape or explode.
