Advice needed.

Firstly, is anyone else experiencing problems with getting comments published on people's blogs?   I type the comment and click Publish and at the moment have to click on it on average ten times before suddenly it springs into action.   Very irritating.

Secondly - this is where any advice will be gratefully received.  I have only a small, very basic television.   The farmer and I rarely looked at TV because after the day out in the fresh air it usually sent him to sleep, so we played Rummikub or did a Jig saw instead.   But now that I am on my own I look through what is on offer and see quite a few programmes which look interesting.   Sometimes they are on at the same time but I have no facility to record.    Neither can I play DVD's, nor make use of IPlayer.    In fact I know little about any of these.

So how do I go about purchasing a 'better' television, more suited to filling these cold, dark evenings.   I live a long way from the large shops such as PC World.   My intention is to call at my local electrical shop, where I have bought all my appliances, as did the farmer, and ask for his advice.   But any you can give me would be appreciated.

Sorry should be ao.com. Heather

Yes re the comments, it seems to be a universal problem at the moment. I've discovered - by accident - that if you refresh the page after you've clicked to publish your comment, it miraculously appears.

Sorry I can't give any advice about buying a TV - technology goes right over my head and I leave all that to husband.

I live between 2 market towns who have independent electrical shops and zi always buy from them, they are both part of Euronics group, I have a Samsung with an Amazon fire stick, get all the catch up programmes (and other stuff I don't understand).

Local shop sounds the best idea as they will probably come and set it up for you.

Slow comment publishing is everyone so no idea why

Rachel Phillips said...

Go to your electrical retailer in the town and say what you have said here. I have Sky so am not a lot of good re Freeview but I would guess you should have a set with Freeview in this day and age. They will sell you the tv and delivery it and install it and show you what to do.
Comment slowness is hitting everyone. I hit once and wait. It seems to emerge as publishing eventually and then appears.

You want what's called a smart tv. It will do pretty much everything.
The comment problem is hitting me too. If I hit it and leave the page it doesn't show up, I have to hit publish several times.

Re the problem leaving comments. Same thing here. Not all but on most blogs it seems to be taking about 15 seconds between clicking the Publish button and anything actually happening.

I would go to the local shop in Leyburn, they may not be the cheapest, but they will probably set it up for you and help if you have any problems and you will be supporting a local shop.I wish just pressing a button even numerous times would let me leave a comment on your blog I am fed up of spotting cars and road signs!

Agree with all the other about using a local retailer. The only other person we ever trust is John Lewis. We have a smart TV with a firestick which allows me to watch iplayer on the big screen. We also have a humax which records programmes to be watched later. Catriona

Amazingly the previous comment I made here went straight through but we are not alone with this problem. I see several people are complaining about it on the Google/Blogger forum.

I agree with the use the local electrical shop as they will set it up and explain how to use - places like Curry's usually are cheaper but just leave you to it.
Not sure what is happening with the commenting it is very slow if you have to verify you are not a robot. I just leave it whirring and go back after a while and it has usually sorted itself out and published.

I'm having same problem commenting with Blogger. It's been like this for a while now. A couple of weeks I should think.

It is best to go local and to someone you have done business with before. They are usually not the cheapest but they know their customers and can be relied upon - usually.

The world and time are moving quickly, but Blogger isn’t. It takes three or four tries and about 15 seconds to get our comments on their way.

Like Sooze said, hitting refresh helps instantly. It is somewhat annoying, but at least it is just one more additional click and not 15...! Sorry, can't help with telly advice..

Blogger is being the pig right now. Refresh seems like a solution. There's nothing I can say about televisions except seek very local advice.

I'm not technically savvy, but SONY seems to be a good brand. I am saying that based on the SONY TV that we have had for ages. My husband would like to get a new one, but this one will not die, nor has it ever had anything wrong with it and it's 10 years old.

Its a problem which occurs occasionally on blogger..I'm not having any problems at present, but my guess it could be due to a high level of traffic on blogger at that time...

We’ve just bought a new TV for our kitchen and it’s a Samsung LED HD TV - a lovely bright picture. We have Freesat, which does need a satellite dish but the box then enables you to pick up loads of channels and also records. You can even set it to record remotely if you’ve forgotten to set it before you leave the house, via the Internet. It’s so clever! You are definitely best to go to your local electrical shop as they will sort out the whole package for you, but TVs these days are easy to set up as they themselves guide you through it.

Comments have been slow off and on for a few weeks for me. I just click publish and wait. And wait. And wait. And then they usually stick.

I'm not having any problems, but my daughter left a comment on one of my posts but it didn't appear.

When you do get a TV, check out Netflix.....I find lovely things to watch on Netflix, and it's very reasonable.

We live in an isolated place and so we use the only local shop there is.
Yes we play more than we would if we went to one of the chain stores or bought on line
But we also have the peace of mind knowing that there is back up when anything goes wrong.
You are likely to receive good advice from your local dealer
a) because he already knows you and
b) because he wants your custom again and your recommendation to friends.

Re comments I’m having the same trouble posting as several other people.

I recently bought a smallish (21" I think) Toshiba TV with integral DVD player, Freeview and Netflix. I have it mounted on a wall bracket to fit across a corner of my living room. It is so easy to use that even I can find my way around most of it's functions.
I use a laptop for blogging and posting, and find it very slow at times. Perhaps you are just experiencing a slow patch.

I'm having to check my spam folder of my blog daily as many comments are getting redirected there!

I am having the same problem commenting and as soon as I highlight the comment and go to copy it in case it disappears and I have to type it again, off it goes and publishes !! Happens every time.

iPlayer is a computer facility, not a TV one (unless you buy a super-duper wi-fi linked TV) so you should be able to get iPlayer on your existing computer/laptop. Just go to the BBC homepage, look at the top and select iPlayer. You will have to register, but that's easy.
It works on a repeat system - for BBC and some radio - (not all programmes are available). Just browse, find a programme you like and it should play it - it will tell you how long it will be available on iPlayer for as well (around a month, I think, usually). If you don't have time for the full programme, say it's a hour long, it remembers where you stopped watching as well, so handy when you go back to it.
That should keep you busy until you sort out a new TV!
We only have freeview on our TV, and that, together with the main channels, gives us plenty to watch, although we find our recording/playback device, which will play DVDs, invaluable.

Yes, I'm having trouble with the publishing button here as well. As for a larger tv, we don't seem to find much on it to watch, each week we get the tv paper and ring around anything that looks interesting, some days there is nothing ringed. Or maybe we are just fussy.

We have a fairly large tv but unfortunately we don't find much on there that we are interested in.. the programming is just terrible.. We don't get BBC... sadly.. I would have to pay more.. We do have a DVD player and usually end up watching movies from there.. I've learned not to waste my time watching a series on TV as more often then not they just cancel it and leave you hanging.. I wish you the best of luck Pat... Love to hear what you ended up with.. :) Hugs! deb

Leaving comments these days gives me time to go make a cup of tea, before returning to see if they've actually been published. I'm sure Mr Blogger will soon fix it.

Well we are getting a new TV tomorrow from the local retailer, so I will post what it is when it arrives!. But go 'smart', you should get something that picks up internet in your house, which will give you you freeview, BBC1player (a godsend at times of dire terrestial tv) and netflix if you are in to films, etc.

I've had the same problems - in fact it was refusing to publish anything I tried to post to John's blog for ages, then yesterday it behaved "perfickly".

As for getting a good TV set up - I found an independent guy who came originally courtesy of the local big appliance company. He came, explained all the permutations of connecting up easily and helped me work out which purchasing options were best for us. Some brands can be programmed to automatically 'talk to one other" and others can't and it becomes much more complicated moving from computer to TV and internet. He did the setting up and the cost was worth every penny! if you can find such a gem, hang on to him tightly!!

I have recently noticed that a comment takes ages to " publish". I thought it must be our computer, but maybe not!

We are TV free so can offer you no help there Pat and about the comments problem then yes as you know there is a definite problem.

Tom Stephenson said...

As far as comments are concerned, the comments now seem to take about 30 seconds to publish right now. This is a Google problem, I think. They still eventually come up if you just go to somewhere else and you will find them when you go back. As I use the computer for TV and DVDs, I cannot advise you about TVs. iPlayer and other catch-ups are wonderful, and you can play the programs whenever you want. I also take a peek at Netflix every now and then, but that is a subscription channel.

liparifam said...

Can you do as I do and order things from Amazon and have them delivered right to you? I would just read reviews and choose a good TV.
Some have the ability to access Netflix and other options built-in; my LG does not, so I have both a Roku and a DVD player that hook up to it simply with HDMI cables (you just have to make sure you buy a TV with several HDMI ports). I can watch Netflix (which I subscribe to), movies and series offered through Amazon (I purchase them individually through my Amazon account), etc., through my Roku. An Amazon Firestick does pretty much the same thing as a Roku. Then, of course, I have a nice TV cable package which gives me 100's of channel choices including movie channels like HBO and Showtime. So I have three choices for watching - Cable TV, Roku, or DVD.

I'm sorry I have nothing to offer as I'm in the States - but there is one consideration to take into account. "Flat" screen TV's do not always have adequate sound, I guess because the speakers are flat, too? If you're hard of hearing, you might want to find one that gives the best sound along with the other features you need. Good luck!!! Television just might be the biggest reason our world is in such a turmoil, but there are still good things to keep us company in the evenings.

Ypes, osting comments slowed down several weeks back for me - takes so long to go through. I only hit PUBLISH once though and then wait - concerned if I click more the blogger will get several repeated comments!

The 'publish' feature on blogger has been slow for me here in the states. As mentioned above, I only click once on the publish comment 'button'--it does eventually post.

Ruth, I started leaving closed captions on all the time when watching TV (even though my hearing is good). It just helps me catch everything that is said, and is especially helpful when the actors have thick accents. Everyone who has watched with me loves the captions and they all go home and turn them on, too!
