Thursday

Well that is Christmas over.   Today I took the few decorations down (I had had no desire to decorate and only did minimally for the sake of my great grandchildren).  I also sat down and read through the large number of cards I had received - that gave me pleasure to renew many contacts with friends far and wide.

This afternoon a friend invited three of us to tea and we had a lovely afternoon of laughter together.  That is what friends are for.

The weather here is North Yorkshire is glorious.   The sun has shone throughout the day after a sharp frost this morning, and by the time we came home there was a sharp frost again and the moon was already in the sky.   There is no snow and I understand that the forecast is for it to get a little bit warmer towards the week-end, so hopefully we have missed the snow here again.

For the first time for many years I have decided that I shall no longer see in the New Year - sad but really I need to  cast off some memories and this is one of them. But as it draws near I wish all of my blogging friends a very happy 2018.

Thank you Pat. I wish you a wonderful year ahead with your family and your new and old friends. By the way I thought your reply on John Gray's blog was the best thing I've read in a long time. I nearly fell off my chair laughing.

This morning while doing the ironing, I was listening online to BBC Radio York and heard your weather forecast. Also, when I was talking to my mother- and sister-in-law in Ripon yesterday, they said it was beautiful sunny. Can't say the same about here; the sky has been a solid grey for days with only a little more light in the early afternoon before a little flurry of wet snow came down.

Not seeing in the New Year would be nearly impossible here for me, even if I wanted to; all my neighbours, no matter what religion or nationality, throw noisy parties and/or have fireworks and firecrackers going off at midnight - no way I could sleep through or ignore that.

Anyway, I hope 2018 will be easier for you than 2017. At least now you are settled in your new home, you AND Tess!

We haven't stayed up to see the New Year in for years and years, but it seems to arrive nevertheless!

Wishing you a peaceful start to your new year with lots of meals out and ukulele playing and settling well into your home

I hope you can turn to a new page with the New Year Pat. I haven't intentionally seen in the New Year for years but am usually awake thanks to everybody trying to outdo each other with the loudest fireworks - a real pain in the butt.

The holidays are nice but there is something special about the peace that comes after the hectic activity of Christmas. May you and Tess enjoy peaceful days and a Happy New Year!

We usually toast to the New Year in synch several time zones to our east. We may be awakened by far-off sounds of revelers, but then again we might sleep through it. Even in my younger days, I was often asleep by midnight. But we will make a toast to peace and freedom in 2018.

We usually get together with friends for the New Year. I will remember 2017 as quite a mixed year for us happy and sad.
Wishing you a peaceful and content 2018 x

I would like to wish you a very peaceful New Year and look forward to keeping in touch through the wonderful world of blogging.

We usually stay up late to watch all the fireworks on the hills opposite us and to chat to family in Scotland that ring us ... usually from the pub 😉

Thank you Weave. You will not be alone; I have not seen the New Year in for years, The next day is the same as any other next day and new beginnings can be made at any time.

I do not do New Year. The DP does. Bottle of Whisky near his elbow and the phone and he connects with his two brothers and sister. I am in bed. Every day is a new day whether it be the end of December or the beginning of January. Happy Hogmanay to you and Tess.

I never see the New Year in anymore. I am vaguely aware of fireworks going off at midnight. New Years come and go. Wishing you a peaceful and happier 2018.

We won't be up for New Years either, a warm bed sounds so much better. Hoping you have a better 2018, that your memories will be loving and less painful.

I shall look to see who's on Jools Holland's show. If it's a good line-up, I'll wait up. If it's not, I shall go to bed!

I'm so glad that your first Christmas without the farmer has passed and hope that next year you will find it a little easier.
Your friends sound great fun.
Lots of us appreciate your blog and your bravery in writings about the painful issues of losing one's partner.
All the very best for 2018. Sue

Wishing you a very good year to come Pat. I am happy to say that we haven't been invited out for New Year's eve...first time in many years. I shall be pleased to stay in and have a few drinks and watch the TV. I thought that I might go to bed "early"..i.e. 10 ish but then realised that there will inevitably be fireworks at midnight so will have to stay and be with the dogs for that!

Clearly so far, the majority of us don't do seeing in the New Year. Also clear that some of us aren't able to get to sleep when we want to because fireworks keep us awake. It's not unusual round here to get the odd ones going off at 3.00 in the morning.

Happy New Year, Weave. We never do anything for NYE apart from listen to Big Ben and use it as an excuse to drink Champagne.

New Year's Eve is just an excuse for me to make gumbo for dinner; I will drink some sparkling wine, watch a little TV, and head to bed well before midnight. Then I will make black-eyed peas and cabbage on New Year's Day for good luck. But most likely it will just be me and the dogs and cat... Wishing you a great 2018!
