Snow

Here in Wensleydale, at 600+ feet, we have been very lucky this time and not had more than a faint covering of snow.   It has indeed been bitterly cold, but the sky has been blue and the sun has shone all day for the last few days.

There was a time, not recently of course, when I would have been overjoyed to see the snow and the thought of snowballing, building snowmen, sledging and the like.   Now I hardly dare venture out of doors for fear of falling over and breaking something.

But today I had to go out as I had quite a lot of business to attend to as well as meeting friends for the usual Tuesday morning coffee (and tea cake for me - self indulgent as I am today) and doing some shopping.   But by the time I reached the centre of town the paths had been cleared of our tiny amount of snow (barely a covering).

It is promised to get slightly warmer over the next few days before turning colder again at the weekend, although not as cold as it has been in some places further South.

I haven't forgotten about photographing the shop window in town.   Their decorations are superb, as usual.    You can imagine, I have absolutely no wish to decorate this year - this has not been my favourite year.   But for the sake of my great grandchildren, who are coming one day to lunch, I am making a bit of an effort and have made sure to have some little thing in each room.  I always get a lot of cards and they will also make the place look Christmassy, so all is not lost.

It's nice when the shops decorate their windows at this time of year. This brightens up the otherwise dark and dull afternoons. When the fresh snow falls it's almost magical for a day or two.

Best not to risk slipping when its snowy or icy. I have put off walking to the bottle bank as it's slippery here most things can be put off until tomorrow!

We still have snow, most unusual for us this near the coast.

I'm surprised Wensleydale hasn't got any snow. Wiltshire rarely has any snow, I can only remember it snowing three or four times here in the last twenty years.

We are just under 600 feet so experience similar weather as you... keep warm

So looking forward to pictures from Serendipity's windows. Thank you. Be careful! Don't get in a hurry.

None of the snow we had last weekend is left, but it has turned rather cold (and sunny, at the moment) again and I expect next time anything falls from the clouds it will be snow.
Like someone else here has commented, don't get in a hurry - nothing is so urgent that it is worth risking a fall for, is it!
Like you, I have not decorated much this year, but more out of lack of time and energy. But the cards I display on the sideboard in the living room make it look Christmassy, and I have an Advent wreath on the coffee table.

Our snow seems to be going and we have rain today. As long as the paths and pavements are not icy I shall be OK, otherwise kind helpers will be shopping for me. I don't wish to spend Christmas in hospital however wonderful our doctors and nurses are.

I can receive emails from you, but at the moment I cannot send them to BT addresses, so please could you send me your new postal address Weave? I want to send you another card for your mantle shelf!

Well the rain came late yesterday afternoon and within a few hours had washed all our snow away. Now it's wet, miserable and very slippery and muddy underfoot. I bet your multitude of Christmas cards will look fantastic for when the little ones come to visit.

We had snow in Atlanta last week! Unusual in the southern US, so we enjoyed it Can't wait to see the shop windows! I would love your address, too :) liparifam@gmail.com

I too have found it difficult to find a way to mark the holidays with decorations, since so many things in my life have changed. This year my adult daughter and I have not put up a tree (a first for me), but have draped conifer boughs over the windows and have many candles--the promise of new growth and of light seem just right.

I'm sure the grandchildren will be delighted to see you and probably get sticky fingerprints on your cards. I have a 5 yr. old granddaughter, and when she comes to visit (frequently, thankfully) I'm always a bit surprised at what she notices and comments on and enjoys as she trips about the house. Take care of yourself, and best wishes for the new year. Regards, Kate in Oregon
