Christmas

Thank goodness for small children.   I have three coming to see me on Boxing Day - all great grand children - two aged one and one aged five months.
And what a good thing because I just do not feel inclined to join in the celebrations this year - my first without the farmer of course.

When I left the farm and  packed everything for the move I threw away all my decorations; they were all old and I had had them years so they were jaded.   Now of course, I have none.   I have bought a 'bridge' for the window, with lights, and I have bought a wooden sign saying 'Merry Christmas'.   Now I wander round the shops looking for something else which will add a bit of festive cheer without overwhelming me.

Tomorrow is the first of several Christmas lunches for friend W and I when we go to have lunch with Alzheimer's patients and their carers in the little town of Richmond, only a short distance away.
We have preordered and have both chosen salmon, knowing we shall be totally and utterly fed up with turkey by the time the season is over.

So now I shall go and finish writing my Christmas cards so that I can post them in the morning - and that will then be another task I can cross off my list.

I think you are celebrating the holidays just right. Seeing the children and then being with good friends should keep you busy enough.

I think that you have once posted a photo of a beautiful local shop window filled with Xmas decorations. Is that shop still around and is there any chance that we could see a picture of it? And then, ..... you should, of course, go inside and see if anything 'sings' to you. I understand the pairing down but beautiful things make the heart sing, don't they? All the best to you!

This year, I have to write my Christmas cards in small time slots here and there; not like in previous years, when I was able to set aside an entire Saturday or Sunday afternoon just for that task. My handwriting is very bad so it takes me really long. Knowing how disciplined and systematic your approach to things is, I can only admire you for keeping up with everything after the sad loss of The Farmer.
It is nice to know you'll have meetings with friends and family and won't be all alone for the holidays.

So busy with work I can barely think about it, and where will the money come from! I hope you enjoy yours, so very different it must be.

I am awful, I have all of my addresses on the computer at the press of a button they print on to sticky labels. Then all I do is write the inside of the card. it takes me too long or I write the address incorrectly and I end up having a card with no envelope that annoys me beyond words. As we are renovating this new house, we have bought a small potted Christmas tree that already had little decorations on it, I just added a small string of battery operated lights I have. I can easily move it around where I want it. With the pot it is about 15 inches tall. I am glad to read that you have visitors on Boxing day.
apologies for any mistakes I am commenting from my phone laptop died

Ah Christmas. How different now. We have our tree up. No family visiting as I have to avoid snotty noses and it being December someone will have one. It will be nice to just chill. And drink lots of red wine.

It will be lovely to see the little ones and I'm sure they will brighten your day.
I'm thinking of getting my cards written tomorrow. I've come down with the lurgies once again so it will probably be the most I can manage to accomplish. X

The proper way to acquire new things. Start with babies. Next year buy a couple of nice decorations to celebrate the babies.

I can understand how you feel as my gran did not want to put up her tree and decor when grandad died and that is why I have them now as she was about to throw them out and I love old decorations as they have a history and my grans are real glass ones and in the original box bought from the market in Sheffield for 1s 6d I think and will be about 70 years old now. It even says on the lid 'put away for Mrs...... - I treasure them and my Xmas tree would not be the same without them but I hope you find a replacement that you are happy with. You will have a lovely day on Boxing day with the children.

I love the Babies coming for Christmas. Lovely !
Stop by the flower stall and pick out a Poinsettia or Christmas Cactus. Some tiny lights, a few Amaryllis and the holidays will seem happier. All your friends will keep you busy plus the weather might help too.
It was hard for me when my baby Nicole died before Christmas. but I has a 4 year old son who needed a wonderful Christmas and that help.

cheers, parsnip

I've been walking around for the past couple of days with Xmas cards, stamps & my address book tucked firmly away in my shoulder bag. -must stop procrastinating & have them written soon!

Your holiday plans sound like good ones.

It's the very old decorations that I treasure the most; some date back Moscow of the 1950's. My old family baubles etc are all packed away in a loft back in the UK, I haven't seen them for about 40 years.

Take it easy and enjoy those babes and your friends. I always buy one thing each year to add to Xmas decorations, but no tree, Lucy would have it over in no time. Buy plenty of plants for their flowers and the knowledge that Spring will eventually come.

What a lovely Boxing Day you will have with those little tots. I will be thinking of you over Christmas. I have sent my cards early this year as I can't remember who I have told of my new address, and enclosed a note of it in each one.
I wont have a tree this year as I don't have room for one, but have kept a few decorations. One or two of them were bought 60 years ago and do look a bit aged but I still love them.

'Fraid I lost interest in Christmas many years ago when it became a festival of greed and debt, when children began looking at the price tag before seeing who gave it.

Knowing the amount you go out to eat with friends I will be surprised if you are not out with them on Christmas Day.
